Hong Kong Government Accuses Local Broadcaster of breaching 'One China' principle

On April 2, the Hong Kong SAR government said that RTHK, public broadcaster in Hong Kong, had breached the "One China" principle. The comment was made by Commerce and Economic Development Secretary Edward Yau. This is all because RTHK has made an investigative report on Taiwan being ignored by the World Health Organisation amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The government-fund, independently-run broadcaster has been under attack by the Hong Kong authorities, pro-Beijing politicians and the pro-Establishment camp. Previously, the Government has refused to increase funding despite the station's high quality, popular news programs during the pro-democracy movement. The police commissioner and pro-Beijing camp have lodged massive complaint after a political satire show "Headliner" ridiculed the police force's misconduct. The government has very recently allowed free-to-air television channel to stop broadcasting programs from RTHK.

Regarding the news program that mentioned Taiwan to the WHO, the Hong Kong government condemned RTHK for failing its "mission as a public service broadcaster" to "foster a sense of citizenship and national identity". In other words, the government a political agenda as the 'mission' of the public broadcaster. The government even demanded the Editor-in-chief of RTHK, the Director of Broadcasting Leung Ka-wing to hold responsibility.
