The head of ASIO has issued a rare public statement confirming that it was aware of an alleged Chinese plot to infiltrate Australia’s parliament.

Multimillion dollar offer from alleged Chinese agent for a prime spot at CSIRO

(25 Nov) A company called Prospect Time International Investment was particularly interested in leasing an "entire wing" in the CSIRO facility in Parkville, Melbourne. Prospect Time's chief executive, occasional Melbourne resident Brian Chen, is alleged to have been involved in a Chinese intelligence-backed scheme for the late Liberal Party member and Melbourne luxury car dealer Bo "Nick" Zhao, 32, to win a seat in Federal Parliament. Zhao was found dead at a motel as he attempted to report to #ASIO subsequently.

Mr Chen and Prospect Time approached the startup company Imunexus in June 2017 after the company took second place in a biotechnology competition in Shenzhen, China. The company’s founder George Kopsidas said Mr Chen offered almost $10 million to buy a majority stake in the company, and claimed he had "hundreds of millions" in financial backing to turn Imunexus' antibody technology into a saleable product.

Australian Strategic Policy Institute analyst Alex Joske raised security concerns about the #CSIRO sharing its premises with foreign-owned companies.

Australian intelligence uncovers and blocks Chinese funding of election candidate through businessman

The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (#ABC) reported on Friday (11th February) that the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) had discovered the close ties between an Australian businessman and China, funding a pro-Beijing Labor Party candidate in this year's federal election.

The report cited an Australian security source that China's intelligence service was working through an Australian businessman to fund members of the Australian largest opposition party, the Labor Party, for the New South Wales constituency in the May parliamentary election. China promised to increase China's influence in the Australian parliament if elected.

But the plan was seen and blocked by Australia's official security intelligence organization.

Chinese property developer in Melbourne reportedly deported from Australia for 'endangering national security'

The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age have confirmed that the federal government has accused Chinese millionaire #ZhengJieFu of carrying out missions for Chinese intelligence agencies and secretly promoting Beijing's interests.

Zheng has been deported from Australia in 2021, making him one of the most recent Australian residents to be deported by the federal government for allegedly having close ties to Chinese state security or foreign interventionist agencies.

Unidentified sources told reporters that the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (#ASIO) had accused Zheng of foreign interference in Australia on behalf of the Chinese government, claiming that he had offered cash to a student in Australia to pressure the father of a human rights activist who was already in Chinese custody. However, Zheng has previously denied the allegations.

ASIO alleges that Zheng had "repeatedly" contacted a suspected Chinese spy on mission in Australia while he was in the country.
