EU to limit tech exports to Hong Kong after Chinese clampdown
The European Union will limit technology exports to Hong Kong that may be used for repression or surveillance, an EU draft document seen by Reuters said, in the bloc’s first concrete reaction to the Chinese security clampdown on the territory.
The European Union reiterated its support for Hong Kong’s autonomy and its citizens, pledging to further engaging with the civil society there.
The European Union also committed to “considering the implications of the national security legislation for asylum, migration, visa and residence policy”, the document said.
The document, backed by EU ambassadors, says the bloc will be “further scrutinising and limiting exports of specific sensitive equipment and technologies for end-use in Hong Kong, in particular where there are grounds to suspect undesirable use relating to internal repression, the interception of internal communications or cybersurveillance”.
The bloc will not launch any new negotiation with Hong Kong for the time being and will review the implications of the security law on existing agreements it has with Hong Kong.//

In the photos, the sculpture — which mocked China’s leader, Xi Jinping, and blamed the Chinese Communist Party for the coronavirus pandemic — lies in a pile of charred rubble.
The base of the sculpture, as well as the bold red letters that spell the name of the artwork, are all that remain of the piece.

As China steps up military pressure on Taiwan, the self-governing island is preparing for the next big frontier of warfare: crippling cyberattacks.
Taiwan's head of cybersecurity told CNN Business this month that it is using dramatic measures to guard against technological vulnerabilities — including employing roughly two dozen computer experts to deliberately attack the government's systems and help it defend against what Taiwanese authorities estimate are some 20 million to 40 million cyberattacks every month.
Taiwan says it has been able to defend against the overwhelming majority of attacks. Successful breaches number in the hundreds, while only a handful are what the government classifies as "serious."

During the opening ceremony of 2020 Tokyo Olympics on July 23, 2021, the national team of Taiwan was arranged to march in the stadium in an order that follows the alphabetical sequence of "Ta". It means the organizer identifies Taiwan in the name of "Taiwan", instead of the name "Chinese Taipei", imposed by the People's Republic of China (#PRC).
Although the official announcement was still made according to the denomination "Chinese Taipei", the host of the Japanese national TV channnel #NHK used the name "Taiwan".
Moreover, on the platform Niconico where many Japanese netizens streamed the ceremony, enthusiatic reactions appeared with entrancd of Team Taiwan and Team Hong Kong.
Many netizens typed in phrases like "Taiwan Taiwan", "An Independent Country", "Fight on, Taiwan", "Love Taiwan" when seeing Tean Taiwan marched in. Netizens also cheered for the Team Hong Kong: "Fight on Hong Kong", "Hongkongers Persist" and "Fight for freedom"
This contrasts with the reactions the Japanese netizens had towards the PRC team. The netizens critique China's human rights violations and political prosecutions in the past and present. Words like "Tiananmen", "Covid", "massacre" popped up.
It was also reported that China's #Tencent suspended the live streaming after the said NHK host called out "Taiwan". In the end, the Chinese streaming platform failed to show the entrance of Team PRC due to its censorship of the official Japanese host.

On July 20, 2021, Former Councilor of Southern District, #TiffanyYuen Ka-wai, had finished serving her 4-month jail term after taking part in the June 4 vigil at Victoria Park in 2020, which was banned by the police for the first time in 30 years.
At the end of her prison term, she was sent to the Lo Wu Correctional Facility to continue to be detained for charges linked to the pro-democracy camp primaries of Legislative Council election in 2020.
At the detention cell, she hugged several other pro-democracy activists also being detained.
Soon afterwards, Yuen was penalized by the authorities for “making physical contact with other prisoners” and placed in solitary confinement for 10 days.
Yuen’s friend Wong Li-li told reporters that there was no enforcement guidelines in the Correctional Services Department decision. Wong explained that “physical contacts” occur naturally in prison routines, condemning that the Department’s decision is arbitrary and targeting unfairly at Yuen.
Look into the Prison Rules in Hong Kong for offences against prison discipline, it certainly didn’t consist of making “physical contact with other prisoners," Wong said.

"Perfected" District Council Election Will Be Held on 10 December, Same Day as International Human Rights Day
On July 24, the government announced that the first District Council Election since its "perfection" will be held on #Dec10 this year, the same day as the International Human Rights Day. The nomination period for the District Councillor sector and Geographical Constituency Candidates is between Oct 17 and 30.
This election will be the first time since the hangover that the district council election is held in December. According to records, previous district council elections were all scheduled in November. The last one held was on Nov 24, 2019, during the height of the #AntiELAB movement. The International Human Rights Day was on Dec 8 that year, when the Civil Human Rights Front held a demonstration with 800,000 participants.
The number of directly-elected District Council seats has been drastically reduced since the government amended the election ordinance on July 6. Previously, 452 seats were directly elected by voters; the upcoming election will have only 88, less than 20% of the total 470 seats. 355 of the remaining seats will be either directly appointed by the Chief Executive, or chosen by government-established committees. Pro-Beijing officials often lauded this rule change as "perfecting" the city's electoral system.
