In Sunday afternoon (June 28) around 6 pm, dozens of white-clad citizens supporting National Security Law set up street kiosk nearby Yuen Long West Rail Station. They later encircled a group of pro-democracy youngsters, a photographer and a reporter. One white-clad citizen was said to lock-up a reporter, and therefore suspected of committing illegal detention. The reporter was reportedly injured.

Moments later, a mother and her 7-8-year-old son went to show their support to National Security Law at the street kiosk. It was suspected that the young kid put down “x” on the paper collecting supporters signature. Being antagonised by the kid’s behaviour, a man in blue assaulted him on his eye.

When the kid’s father came to argue, he was encircled by white-clad citizens and heavily criticised. When this group of white-clad citizens attempted to leave, they were stopped by bystanders on the site.

Riot police soon arrived, two cordon lines were established to separate the opposing groups. White-clad citizens were seen changing their outfits while waiting and deliberately avoiding cameras.

The young kid being assaulted and his family were taken to a police station for further investigation. The man in blue who assaulted the young kid was also taken away by police. However, since he was not cuffed, it remained uncertain whether he was arrested. Police officer, in the meantime, obstructed reporters from reporting the case.

A member of Tin Shui Wai Connect, Ng Kin-wai made an inquiry to Police Force, asking whether the white-clad citizens shoved reported would be officially arrested. Operation Commander only mentioned that they had been taken to nearby police station for inquiry.

District Councillor called for local citizens to keep close eyes on the case to ensure the white-clad citizens will be taken to a police station as the police Commander claimed.

LegCo Councillor Kwong Chun-yu called for citizens to contact district councilors if they had videos taken, which will help the councilors to find out the ins and outs of the incident.

Neighbourhood and Worker's Service Centre: Unity of the Pro-democracy Camp Over Winning of Seats

The election for new legislative councillors has been slated to happen in September. The pro-democracy camp is preparing for the primary elections in Hong Kong on 11 and 12 July, and has the intention to request the losing candidates not to join the election.

On 19 June, Neighbourhood and Worker's Service Centre (Neighbourhood workers) met the media and shared that their focus was not just with the result of the primary election. They said that they are closely watching the results of the latest public survey in order to make a decision of their focus at a later time. After being criticised by different parties, the Neighbourhood and Workers' Service Centre released a statement stating their intentions "to not be obsessed about seats in legislative council" and "to ensure that the camp unites".

They have decided not to participate in the 2020 LegCo election.

Cyberattacks from China Targeting European Hospitals to Obtain Patient Records during the COVID-19 Pandemic

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, some hospitals in Europe were said to have been targeted by cyberattacks from China, launched by Beijing in an attempt to access hospital records. Following the virtual EU-China summit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on 22nd of June, "We have seen cyberattacks on hospitals and dedicated computing centres. Likewise, we’ve seen a rise in online disinformation, and we pointed out clearly that this cannot be tolerated." This was the European Commission President's first serious accusation of Beijing.

This statement from the European Commission President had brought to mind the many cyber incidents that had been happening during the pandemic. French weekly magazine Le Point had revealed that European hospitals had been facing large-scale cyberattacks from Chinese hackers since March. The atmosphere at the time was very tense, with multiple parties accusing China of concealing the severity of the pandemic, hence missing the prime window of opportunity to save tens of thousands of lives. At the same time, US President Trump had termed COVID-19 as the "Chinese virus" and criticised the World Health Organisation for answering to China.

Citing from insiders close to French officials, the report also revealed that the motive of China's large-scale cyberattacks was to obtain patient data, including the ages of hospitalised patients and concrete information regarding treatment, etc. The main purpose was perhaps to draw comparisons with China's own data, as well as to understand the development of the coronavirus beyond its borders.

On 22nd of March, Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP), manager of 39 hospitals in Paris and its suburbs, was subjected to a denial-of-service (DDos) attack on some of its computer servers. AP-HP was able to resolve the situation in time through various methods such as temporarily halting employees' access to emails and remote working tools. The Czech government had also revealed that its Brno University Hospital network faced a similar cyberattack on 13th of March.

Cyberattacks on healthcare systems are not isolated events. A report by the French Senate on 10th of June exposed the vulnerabilities of the cybersecurity of healthcare providers. The drafter of the report pointed out that the health sector had encountered 18 cyberattacks within a year, which was the result of the perpetual lack of funding in information security.

Earlier in June, NATO had also emphasised the severity of cyberattacks that were specifically targeting coronavirus-related healthcare service providers, hospitals and research centres. In late April, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell revealed as well that since the outbreak of coronavirus, high levels of phishing and malware spreading had been discovered, part of which concerned critical information on the infrastructure of the management of the coronavirus crisis. However, Borrell did not mention whether these incidents were linked to China.

Public Broadcaster in HK Removes Veteran Journalist and Academic From Shows

After the multiple arrests of media workers and the shutdown of #Apple Daily, the authorities continue to shake up the media industry in Hong Kong.

On June 28, 2021, #RTHK, the public broadcaster funded by the government removed #AllanAu (#AuKaLun), a veteran journalist and university lecturer #LeungKaiChi from a radio programme and a TV show, respectively.

They are both columnists well known for speaking up against injustice and making critical analysis from their professional expertise. They both taught at local universities.

They were notified of the station's decision at the last minute, namely on the same day. For Leung, the entire show he used to host was canceled and replaced by replayed programmes.

Just a week ago, snother RTHK radio host, Tsang Chi-ho, was sacked with immediate effect, despite his popularity in the show "Crazy and Happy". Before that, Tsang used to co-host Headliner, a popular political satire that was axed by RTHK after attacks by the pro-Chins camp.

Au has been a co-host of the current affairs show for 11 years. Au spent the last 20 seconds of the show to say goodbye to his audience. He reiterated that the motto of the phone-in show was to "speak the truth" and hoped everyone would take care.
