#ScoutAssociation led by #CarrieLam violates gathering ban, Commissioner: Ashamed to be part of the group

The Scout Association of Hong Kong, where Carrie Lam is named the Chief Scout, held a graduation dinner for the first class of Senior Executive Training Class. The event has reportedly violated the gathering ban as about 100 people attended the dinner.

According to Apple News, a former senior executive of the Association and current member of the Hong Kong police force at the scene, however, claimed that the dinner was a “private event” and therefore did not violate the ban. His speech aroused discontent among many scout members.

Wong Wai-chun who has been involved in the scout team for years expressed his frustration on Facebook. He posted a photo of a destroyed letter of appointment issued by Carrie Lam and indicated that he decided to quit his position as a commissioner of the headquarters.

Wong said, the incident has broken the trust in the team. Many scout leaders and members felt disappointed and angry because they were strictly “advised” even when they held events that were following the healthcare guidelines. The dinner held by the headquarters showed the double-standard of the organization.

Wong said he reflected his thoughts to the senior level, but his opinion was not considered. He felt that quitting the team was the only way to show his frustration, and he was “ashamed to be part of the group”.

#CivilServant for Not Signing Allegiance Oath

Mr. Wu had been a civil servant in Hong Kong for over 30 years serving the governments before and after the handover. He was recently fired for not signing the government-required oath indicating his allegiance to Hong Kong Basic Law.

On April 12, 2021, he received the suspension order from his workplace, Environmental Department. Since then, he has not received any response upon his inquiry of the government's decision.

Mr. Wu recounted that he was asked by the management to sign the oath on March 12, the last day of submission. Mr. Wu in the end signed the document and turned in three copies: one in person and two by fax.

However, the government decided to fire him directly and did not follow up with his query. On April 20, 2021, the management of the Department bar Mr. Wu from returning to the office. On April 23, the Department cleared his desk and claimed that his belongings would be sent to his home, or the landfill otherwise. Mr. Wu was unable to retrieve his medication and the keys to his home. He has since then spent a few days on the street.

The statement released by the union #HKCTU pointed out that Mr. Wu had been fulfilling his duty as a civil servant for over 30 years. The behavior of the government clearly endangers the rights of the employees with a different voice.

The US supports Australia in repealing the “Belt and Road” agreement, saying Australia is the victim of China’s coercive diplomacy

Australian federal government repealed “Belt and Road” memorandum and “framework agreement” between the Victorian state government and China. The decision has caused China discontent and renewed tension between China and Australia. United Stated indicated their support to Australia’s decision on Thursday (22 April), described Australia as a victim of China’s coercive diplomacy, which borne tremendous toll.

On Wednesday (21 April), Australian Foreign Minister Payne used her powers conferred by Foreign Affairs (State and Territorial Arrangements) Act 2020 passed late last year, to cancel the “Belt and Road” memorandum and “framework agreement” between Victorian state government and China. US Spokesperson of State Council Ned Price, when asked whether US will take a similar action, or has US spoken to Australia about the move during regular press conference, responded “this is a decision made by the Australian Government”. He continued by saying that US will continue to stand with the people of Australia for the brunt of the PRC’s coercive behavior. Price said that Australia government's cancellation of agreements with China, Iran and Syria demonstrated that Australia is focused on protecting its national interest from all international concerns.
