A New Low in Youth #Happiness: 20% of Youths Want to Leave Hong Kong; Over 50% Discontent about the Government

The Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association of Hong Kong conducted a survey entitled "Sense of Hope and Happiness in 2021".

The findings reveal that the level of happiness in youths in Hong Kong has fallen through the warning score of 7, and out of the "happiness interval".

The latest index score is 6.94, a new low in 4 years.

The youths surveyed have generally given low scores in the city's political climate, society, economy, and future.

Other than finding a new low in happiness levels, the survey also found that more than half of respondents (50.9%) are dissatisfied with the government as a whole.

For long-term life goals, 20% of youths chose "emigrate to a foreign country", a higher percentage than "marriage/raising children".

The Boys' and Girls' Clubs Association is a charity funded mainly by the government; its work focuses on promoting the rights and welfare of youths in the city.

At the survey's press conference on April 17, 2021, the association arranged three students to answer reporters' questions. When asked about the government's performance, all three fell silent.

One of them eventually answered hesitantly that the government had not been able to look after everyone during the pandemic, and that she "only focuses on schoolwork now." The others said they agreed with her.

#Survey to assess demand for setting up a Hong Kong Government in exile

A political campaign group #AtlasMovement initiated a survey to gauge the demand for setting up a Hong Kong Government in exile.

“We have been thinking of setting up a Democratic Government in Exile to represent Hong Kongers and their interest in front of the international community, and to provide certain key state services,” the group wrote on its website and initiated a survey.

The group explained that the imposition of the #NationalSecurityLaw in June 2020 has led to a significant backslide and deterioration of democracy, rule of law and the guarantee of civil and political rights in Hong Kong.

It called the legislative elections in Hong Kong in December 2021 “a sham”, in which Hong Kongers can no longer express their voice or votes inside the city, and have no representation outside.

The survey aimed to assess demand for a Democratic Government in Exile; its representation; its function; how leaders could be elected and sources of funding.

Across 19 countries, more people see the U.S. than China favorably – but more see China’s influence growing

//In 19 countries surveyed by Pew Research Center this spring, people see the United States and President #JoeBiden more favorably than China and its president, Xi Jinping. But when it comes to perceptions of each country’s relative influence in the world, much larger shares in most nations see China’s influence growing than say the same of the U.S.

The five key findings comparing international attitudes toward the two countries are:

1. The U.S. is generally seen more positively than China.

2. Views of Biden remain much more positive than views of #XiJinPing.

3. A median of 66% across 19 countries say China’s influence on the world stage is getting stronger, while just 32% say the same about the U.S.

4. In many countries, younger people tend to feel more positively about China than older people.

5. People on the right of the ideological spectrum are more likely than those on the left to view the U.S. favorably, but there are no strong ideological patterns in views of China.//
