Politicians push Beijing Winter Olympics ā€˜diplomatic boycottā€™ across 11 Western countries

A group of politicians across Europe and North America launched coordinated legislative actions on Monday, calling for a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Spanning 11 countries and parliaments, the actions aim to pressure governments, elected officials and heads of state to decline invitations to next yearā€™s Games, citing ā€œgross violations of human rightsā€ by the Chinese government.

In the United States, a resolution supported by the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives, Gregory Meeks, calls for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to instigate emergency measures to find a replacement venue, ā€œgiven ongoing crimes against humanity committed by the host governmentā€.

EXCLUSIVE China policies could cut millions of Uyghur births in Xinjiang

Chinese birth control policies could cut between 2.6 to 4.5 million births of the Uyghur and other ethnic minorities in southern Xinjiang within 20 years, up to a third of the regionā€™s projected minority population, according to a new analysis by a German researcher.

The report, shared exclusively with Reuters ahead of publication, also includes a previously unreported cache of research produced by Chinese academics and officials on Beijingā€™s intent behind the birth control policies in Xinjiang, where official data shows birth-rates have already dropped by 48.7% between 2017 and 2019.

Adrian Zenzā€™s research comes amid growing calls among some western countries for an investigation into whether Chinaā€™s actions in Xinjiang amount to genocide, a charge Beijing vehemently denies.
