White Terror Pervades in Schools, As Surveillance Cameras Are Installed

A teacher has contacted Apple Daily and revealed that, without seeking parents and teaching staff's prior consent, surveillance cameras were being installed in 25 Po Leung Kuk Nurseries and Kindergartens. At least 3 campuses had already completed the installation.

These surveillance cameras were described to have "zero blind spot" to capture both images and voices. Teaching staff believed that the real goal is to scrutinize and monitor their behaviour and opinions shared in class. The teachers consider the installation of the surveillance cameras as an intrusion of privacy and erosion in the freedom of expression.

Transparency needed for health experts to tackle mysterious Wuhan Pneumonia, Research Professional said

Editor note: The following is written by a research professional of the University of Hong Kong

In fact, Wuhan Institute of Virology has the Country's top virologists. One of the Institute's research focus has been Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and considerable contributions have been made since the outbreak of SARS in 2003.

At least in scientific research, the Institute's knowledge on SARS and technical know-how has gained international recognization. As for what policy rumination the Chinese government has taken to bog down announcement of the definitions of pathogens and diseases, it is certainly not a scientific consideration.

There are tens of thousands of known viruses in the world, so it is believed to have some tricks behind the reason that local and even international experts took risks to link Wuhan strain only to bat coronavirus, a precursor to SARS.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the new coronavirus announced by Chinese scientists this morning is similar to SARS, which the Institute previously studied. The Institute also reported that the results were preliminary and more research is needed to understand the virus.

Jury Rules Death Cause of Pro-democracy student Alex Chow Undetermined

On Jan 9, 2021, the jury returned an open verdict in the death of 22-year-old university student #AlexChow Tsz-lok, following almost two days of deliberation.

The five-member jury, consisting of two men and three women, told the Coroner's Court that they were unable to determine the causes and circumstances of Chow's death.

The inquest into the death of the University of Science and Technology student lasted for almost four weeks, with nearly 50 witnesses summoned.

Speaking to reporters after the court ruling, Chow's father, said he respects the verdict and thanked the jurors for their hard work.

"They took the case very seriously and have worked so hard. I want to tell Tsz-lok that we've tried our best to find out the truth, even though many questions remain unanswered and we are still some distance away from being able to get to the very bottom of what happened", he said, teary-eyed.

Volunteer #FirstAider who attended in #AlexChow’s case criticises the police for being dishonest

Carson Tsang Long-hin, spokesperson of the group #Ideologist, was the volunteer first aider who appeared at the Coroner’s Court as a citizen witness for Alex Chow’s case.

Tsang said he respected the jury’s decision that the cause of death was suspicious, and hoped Hong Kongers would allow time for the Chow’s family to reflect and digest the decision.

Tsang criticised the police for lying at the press conference following Chow’s death that they did not enter the parking lot when Chow fell. The police only admitted doing so when evidence that showed the opposite was found.

Tsang also questioned whether the police have done their best on the investigation as they claimed that no videotape showing Chow’s fall was found. The videotape was later found upon investigation by the Coroner and the Coroner officer.

Dozens of Hong Kong top officials and legislators attended birthday party of a CCP representative violated pandemic restriction

13 senior government officials and 19 legislators in Hong Kong were among the 170 attendees sent into a 21 days quarantine in Penny’s Bay after they attended a birthday party of a CCP representative on January 3, 2022 despite the government’s own pandemic warning.

They included police chief Raymond Siu, immigration chief Au Ka-wang, Home Affairs Secretary Caspar Tsui and Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, Christopher Hui.

In nearly identical wording, senior officials sent out their statements of apologies in past couple of days. However, only 3 among the 13 officials mentioned that they used the mandatory “Leave Home Safe” tracing App when arriving the premise.

Lawyers who examined photographs of the event said the signs indicating criminal offences included guests chatting unmasked, the failure to use the “Leave Home Safe” exposure alert application and the large crowd that was present.

The party, held on January 3, 2022, was to celebrate the 53rd birthday of Witman Hung Wai-man, a delegate to China’s top national legislature. The well-connected politician invited a long list of the city’s political establishment, ranging from the home affairs secretary to the security chief.

The embarrassing incident came as concerns had been raised in recent weeks after a number of Omicron cases were identified in Hong Kong. Health officials openly asked citizens to avoid large gatherings in the middle of an Omicron outbreak.

Days before the incident, Lam summoned top officials from Cathay Pacific airlines and said they must take responsibility for their aircrew breaching self-isolation rules even if “they may not know their employees’ every act”.
