[Nationality limit]: China’s National Radio and Television Administration strengthens surveillance on non-Chinese actors. Liu Yifei, Gong Li and Jet Li are not Chinese Nationals.

In order to strengthen surveillance of the film and TV industry, the National Radio and TV Administration (NRTA) has previously implemented a “Historical drama limit”, “Salary limit” and “Korean drama limit”, etc. Although China’s economy has taken a hit due to Wuhan pneumonia, it has recently been reported that NRTA is introducing another restriction - “Nationality limit”. Other than banning inferior artists, artists of foreign nationality, or HK, Macau and Taiwan artists who performed misconducts or inappropriate speeches are to be banned. Many artists of foreign nationality who have returned to China may be affected. Mulan star Liu Yifei, Gong Li and many others are not Chinese nationals.

“Nationality limit” states that the “improper use of foreigners” means if there aren’t any particularly bad behaviors, the actor’s work will not be affected. However, the definition of “improper” depends on the authority’s decision. This restriction is believed to be targeted towards “unpatriotic” HK and Taiwanese actors, in addition to foreign actors.

Upon hearing the news, Mainland actress Ning Jing, who moved to the States after getting married to an American, immediately posted on Weibo that she is born and raised in China, and China is her only motherland. Yet she didn’t mention anything about living in America for so many years. The screenwriter of patriotic movie “Wolf Warrior”, Dong Qun, posted on Weibo to show his strong support for the new restriction. He even said that the restriction should extend to CCTV and other channels’ TV hosts, journalists and newspaper editors. He believes that these elites, who are China’s mouthpiece, should educate everyone to be patriotic, and should not try to obtain foreign nationalities. Last year, netizens condemned artists who own foreign passports, but have been earning RMB in China. Liu Yifei, Gong Li and Jet Li were amongst those criticised. Netizens have launched another wave of criticism upon the introduction of the “Nationality limit”.

Pro-Democracy Activists Around the World Call On Freedom-Loving People to Boycott Disney's Mulan Played by Pro-Police Violence Chinese Actress

Disney's new film Mulan, featuring Chinese actress Liu Yifei, is available on the video streaming platform Disney+ since September 4, 2020.

The female lead Liu Yifei is known for her open support for the Hong Kong police as early as August 2019. On her Chinese social media account Weibo, Liu shared a post by China state-media People's Daily with the heading "I support Hong Kong Police, You can hit me now. What a shame for Hong Kong". Her pro-police stance has triggered calls for boycotting the film Mulan soon after Disney announced the cast.

On September 5, 2020, pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong on Twitter urged Hongkongers not to support the pro-police violence Liu and asked all freedom-loving people to boycott the film.

Veteran Chinese pro-democracy activist and writer Wang Dan also shared news about the boycott for Mulan in Taiwan after the film was released in theatre.

Wang reminded his readers:

"if you still remember how Hong Kong youngsters--many of them have not even reached their 20s--were violated by the police...

If you also think that celebrities like Liu Yifei who make money by forsaking their conscience do not deserve...

If you agree that justice and righteousness are worth more than a film..."

Wang said there is not much one can actually do for Hongkongers, but "at least one can stand against pro-Chinese Communist Party artists together".

Founder of Taiwanese Forum PTT Boycotts Disney's Mulan, Hailing Hong Kong Women as "True Mulans"

Ethan Tu, founder of Taiwan’s AL Lab initiative and forum PTT, announced on 6 September, 2020 that he will resolutely boycott Disney's Mulan starred by Chinese actress Liu Yifei.

Tu pointed out that the true spirit of the heroic Mulan is carried by many women in Hong Kong who took to the streets to defend their homeland, the rule of law and human rights even though they were threatened by police violence.

In Tu's opinion, Chinese actress Liu Yifei, who was openly supportive of the infamously abusive Hong Kong police, was too hypocritical and therefore incapable of portraying the heroine Mulan.

"I will not watch Mulan. For I have watched the real Mulans [in Hong Kong] die for my ideals and freedom for a whole year. I cannot watch the hypocritical patriotic story of becoming a hero."

Tu lamented that the youth took to the streets for Hong Kong, but were threatened and persecuted by the Hong Kong police with sexual violence. Therefore, he could not look at Liu Yifei, who supported Hong Kong Police's indiscriminate violence.

Milk Tea Alliance disapproves of Chinese actress's support towards police brutality

Controversy over the film ignited last year, when its star, Liu Yifei, posted on the popular Chinese social media platform Weibo.

Translated, her message reads, “I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now,” followed by, “What a shame for Hong Kong.”

Many voiced their disappointments toward Yifei for standing by the law enforcement and accused her of supporting police brutality and oppression.

In solidarity with people demanding democratic reforms, protesters in Thailand have also backed up their peers in Hong Kong and Taiwan, forming the Milk Tea Alliance. Ahead of Mulan’s release on Disney Plus on Friday, Netiwit Chotiphatphaisal, a Thai student activist, tweeted, “I invite everyone to #boycottMulan #banMulan to make Disney and the Chinese government know that state violence against the people is unacceptable.”
