Equal Opportunities Commission: Language-related requirements could lead to indirect discrimination

Editor’s Note: Is that because EOC later realised if they charge Kwong Wing Catering race discrimination would indirectly admit that Hongkonger belongs to a different race, a different race from Chinese? And so EOC made another speech clarifying the possible charge given what Kwong Wing Catering said is true? This is really a too sensitive topic for both HK gov and CCP.

(16 Feb) As the Wuhan coronavirus continues to spread, Kwong Wing Catering earlier announced that they would only serve Hong Kong people due to their dissatisfaction with the Government's failure to completely shut down the border.  Kwong Wing said that they received a phone call from the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC), saying they could not refuse to serve a certain type of people and may prosecute the restaurant. However, the EOC clarified today that their staff did not issue any warning or mention the need to prosecute the restaurant during the call. They also pointed out that "language" is not "race" as defined under the Race Discrimination Ordinance but if there were certain language-related requirements or conditions which may disadvantage certain people, this could lead to indirect discrimination against a certain race.

Hong Kong Lawmaker: Legalizing same sex marriage destroys social value and violates national security law

In a reply to Legislative Council member Regina Ip, chairperson of the New People Party, about the legislation schedule of the Sex Discrimination Ordinance (#SDO), the Equal Opportunities Commission (#EOC) chairperson Chu Man-kin said that there was no timetable for the ordinance at the moment and should not have a rigid one.

But he said that an internal study has reached a consensus on some of the issues.

However, another legislator Junius Ho Kwan-yiu said that legalising homosexual marriage is a matter of right and wrong, and will directly destroy the composition of society and families.

He claims that the dissemination of undesirable ideologies like this was prohibited under Article 23 of the National Security Law of the People's Republic of China.
