The National Health Commission of the People's Republic of China confirmed "Chinese Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) team" was formed. Seven people as "the vanguard team" would arrive Hong Kong today for laboratory testing. Neo Democrats protested at Hospital Authority (HA) against Chinese NAT team coming to Hong Kong today morning (2 Aug). District councillor Roy Tam Hoi Pong was concerned that those DNA information extracted from samples of NAT test might be sent to China. "China government has collected Uyghur's DNA for the use of surveillance. How are they going to manage these DNA samples of HKers? Will they be destroyed immediately or not?"
In a press conference, Roy Tam stated that Chinese testing technicians should receive trainings related, especially on the strict medical procedure of DNA tests. "If there are any medical malpractice or misconduct, will they bear the responsibilities judged by Hong Kong's law? Or will there be any exemption?"
Beijing Genomics institution (BGI) has recruitedstaff for nose swab tests. Roy Tam quoted from committee member of Hong Kong Allied Health Profeestionals and Nurses Association and frontline nurse Lau Hoi-man, that medical professionals are necessary for nasal swab test because of medical procedures. He doubted if it was legal for staff from mainland, with their qualification different from Hong Kong's requirement, to practice in Hong Kong.
Roy Tam questioned why Chinese testing inspectors could be an exemption from compulsory quarantine since they could be hidden virus carriers and initiate the fourth wave of the outbreak. "Doesn't Carrie Lam dare to ask them for quarantine? There will be risks before any benefits to Hong Kong."
Roy Tam worried about the quality of Chinese-made virus test kits which have been returned by many countries last few months, and also criticised Hong Kong government had political concern on decision making about medical issues. ”Negative Covid-19 test result doesn't mean you are not a hidden virus carrier. Many people misunderstood that. Universal screening will lead to an opposite effect, and hinder the anti-pandemic progress.”
Today is the eleventh consecutive days with more than 100 new cases, the range for testing will be expanded as Chinese testing inspectors arrive. Roy Tam asked HA and experts to comment on whether they support a Covid-19 test for everyone. "Many experts in Hong Kong have said universal screening is not necessary. Hong Kong government is giving fake information. Testing for everyone is not effective return and drag down the medical system."
Natalie Tsui, Yau Tsim Mong district councillor and a nurse of psychiatry, said a Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) has to be conducted under a clinical environment, such as negative pressure isolating room. In Hong Kong, only medical staff with specialised training can handle it. "If the test is not conducted in a negative pressure isolating room, the disease can be spread in the air."
Before the press conference, at least five police arrived and accused the councilors for violating the gathering ban, demanding them to stand seperately, or they will be fined. After the conference was ended, police requested for the identities of the councilors, saying that they had taken photos together, but they would not be fined for the time being.

Taiwan Celebrity Shows Support for Hong Kong in Pursuit of Freedom and Democracy
Taiwanese showbiz celebrity, Ili Cheng, nicknamed Jipai Mei, showed her support for Taiwan DPP's candidate for the mayor of Kaohsiung, Chen Chi-mai, on Aug 1.
During the event, Cheng said that she had supported Taiwan’s 2014 Sunflower Movement and because of that, many of her job opportunities were cancelled in the following two years.
When she went to Hong Kong to conduct a publicity campaign, she was even deported by the Hong Kong Immigration Department and was being treated as if she was a criminal.
She hopes that the Taiwanese will not forget the "fellow Hong Kong protesters" of the past year and not give up on Hong Kong. Wiping her tears, she rallied the Taiwanese people to continue to stand for what is right.

Dr. Ip Iam-chong is an assistant professsor in Cultural Studies at Hong Kong Lingnan University and a founder of InMediaHK, an online news agency in Hong Kong. The university recently reduced his employment to a one-year contract. He wrote the following reflection on the supplementary section of the newspaper MingPao:
//This kind of "extraordinary" means is used particularly explicitly to Joannes Chan Man-mun and Benny Tai Yiu-ting, but it is not an isolated case.
In the past few years, I have constantly heard news from the academic circle that somebody was not renewed, especially those who are politically active, have more social participation, and have sharper speeches.
I also received a notice from the university this year that my application for "substantiation" was rejected, and only got a one-year contract. I will have to say goodbye next year. Of course, these cases are not as outrageous as what Benny Tai encountered, and scholars involved do not need to be imprisoned. They are not so "extraordinary", but there are many "unusual" reasons.
It’s a bit sad that in addition to those politically popular cases, most of the stories of being kicked out by universities may not receive sympathy or support from peers. I have heard of colleagues, who have similar political views, think that those cases had nothing to do with politics, but the academic level of the parties is not enough. I hope that Benny Tai's case can make them more sensitive to college politics. Of course, no one can find evidence to prove that there is a big conspiracy behind cases, but there is reason to believe that the senior officials of the university, as well as the SAR and Beijing government, really want to "clean up" the university.
There may be people from the administrative level of the university receiving political orders. Some people want to please the Liaison Office or the Beijing government, but more of them may just want to eliminate college teachers who are not doing their jobs properly, so that universities can have less politics and free up job vacancies for "non-political" international scholars who are committed to university and their own rankings. Some people may just want to have more "international" level research and publications in universities in Hong Kong, and don't want the staff to be busy taking the streets to engage in joint signing, or like me, writing this kind of newspaper comment. //

On August 2, 2022, United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi arrived on a US military aircraft in #Taiwan at 10:45pm, landing at Songshan Airport in Taipei.
According to Taiwanese media reports, Pelosi's visit amounts to an official visit from the United States. Her itinerary includes visiting the Legislative Yuan (Taiwan's legislature), a press conference where she is expected to give an major speech, as well as a meeting and state lunch with Taiwanese president Tsai Ing-wen.
Though Pelosi originally planned to leave Taiwan at 3pm the next day, she had added one more stop before leaving: a meeting with Causeway Bay Bookstore's Lam Wing-kee, Chinese pro-democracy activist Wu'er Kaixi, and Taiwanese NGO worker Lee Ming-che, who had been arrested and jailed in China for five years.

Hong Kong court quashes decision to enforce reporting ban on activist’s national security case in landmark ruling
//Reporting restrictions on proceedings regarding the transfer of criminal cases to the High Court must be lifted if the defendant makes such a request, a Hong Kong court has ruled.
The landmark judgement, which could extend to cases prosecuted under the national security law, came after activist #ChowHangTung challenged a magistrate’s decision to retain reporting restrictions in a national security case.
In a ruling published on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, High Court Judge Alex Lee said that magistrates had no say in whether to lift reporting restrictions on committal proceedings if the accused had applied to do so.
Chow, along with the Alliance, and the group’s former leaders #LeeCheukYan and #AlbertHo, were charged under the Beijing-imposed #NationalSecurityLaw over alleged incitement to subversion.

Hong Kong court quashes decision to enforce reporting ban on activist’s national security case in landmark ruling
//Reporting restrictions on proceedings regarding the transfer of criminal cases to the High Court must be lifted if the defendant makes such a request, a Hong Kong court has ruled.
The landmark judgement, which could extend to cases prosecuted under the national security law, came after activist #ChowHangTung challenged a magistrate’s decision to retain reporting restrictions in a national security case.
In a ruling published on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, High Court Judge Alex Lee said that magistrates had no say in whether to lift reporting restrictions on committal proceedings if the accused had applied to do so.
Chow, along with the Alliance, and the group’s former leaders #LeeCheukYan and #AlbertHo, were charged under the Beijing-imposed #NationalSecurityLaw over alleged incitement to subversion.
The Alliance, before it was disbanded in September last year, organised Hong Kong’s annual candlelight vigils commemorating victims of the #TiananmenCrackdown, where it is estimated that hundreds, perhaps thousands, died when the People’s Liberation Army cracked down on protesters in #Beijing on June 4, 1989.//
