EU proposes new post-Trump alliance with U.S. in face of China threat

The European Union (EU) is seeking to forge a new alliance with the U.S. to bury the tensions of the Trump era and meet the challenges posted by China, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing a draft plan.

The draft plan also says, “as open democratic societies and market economies, the EU and the US agree on the strategic challenge presented by China’s growing international assertiveness, even if we do not always agree on the best way to address this”

Zhao Lijian posts 'Australian Soldier Killing Child' image. Australian PM: fake image insults soldiers, demands an apology.

Australia-China Relations have deteriorated again after the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian posted a picture of an Australian soldier killing an Afghan child on Twitter. The post immediately caused discontent in Australia, with Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison calling the fake image offensive and objectionable, and demanding an apology from China.

The image shows a man in military uniform standing on a puzzle of the Australian and Afghan flags with a sabre held to the boy's neck and the words "Don't be afraid, we are coming to bring you peace."

The picture looks quite real, but according to the Australian media, it is actually a satirical painting by the pro-China creator "Wu He Qi Lin". Zhao wrote “Shocked by murder of Afghan civilians & prisoners by Australian soldiers. call for holding them accountable.” on a Twitter post with the picture.

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says she has “pile of cash”, no bank account due to US sanctions.

In August, the United States government imposed sanctions on top Chinese officials forcing the National Security Law upon Hong Kong and “curtailing political freedoms in the territory”. Chief Executive Carrie Lam, one of the sanctioned officials, stated in a televised interview that "Sitting in front of you is a chief executive of the Hong Kong SAR [Special Administrative Region] who has no banking services made available”. She continued that "I have piles of cash at home, the Government is paying me cash for my salary because I don't have a bank account."

Despite this ‘inconvenient’ setback, she added that "I don't want to … deter people from serving in a public position because it is very honourable in this set of circumstances to be so unjustifiably sanctioned by the US Government."

Carrie Lam is paid around $HK5.21 million (USD$672,150) per year, making her one of the highest-paid government officials in the world.

Ex-Civil Servant in Hong Kong seeks
#JudicialReview over government's allegiance pledge

In Hong Kong, former assistant taxation officer Wong Chau-ming - who had been working in the Inland Revenue Department since 1996 - filed a writ with the high court on November 29, 2021. Wong was forced to retire after he challenged the Hong Kong government's necessity for civil servants to take a loyalty pledge.

It is the first judicial review application filed by a #CivilServant concerning the pledge since the Hong Kong SAR Government announced the mandatory requirement for civil servants to pledge support for the #BasicLaw and allegiance to the SAR Government.

Although Wong submitted a signed declaration on August 12, 2021, he was informed by the commissioner of inland revenue that his pre-retirement leave would take place from August 31 to October 24 and that his retirement would take effect on October 25, 2021.

Wong stated the retirement order was irrational as he had signed the declaration and there is no good reason for the authority not to accept it. He added the order was "tainted with procedural impropriety" because he was not given a reason for being directed to retire.

"Don't Lie Flat": New Values Education Framework Promotes "Dilligence", Drops "Critical Thinking" and "Human Rights"

Hong Kong's Education Bureau (#EDB) issued the "Values Education Curriculum Framework (Pilot Version)" on November 30, 2021, as reference material for the city's primary and secondary schools.

The new framework adds "diligence" as a "priority value and attitude" on top of the nine existing values. It also emphasizes "[nurturing] a sense of belonging towards the country from an early age", so as to help students "understand their responsibility, as a Chinese, to protect their family and the country".

The announcement came days after an online article by Secretary for Education #KevinYeung, in which he stressed the importance of #ValuesEducation, while criticizing a trend to "lie flat" among young people.

[Editor's note: The term "lie flat" (躺平) is popularized by young Mainland Chinese netizens who felt disillusioned by long working hours and high social expectations.

In response, they opt for a lifestyle and work ethic of minimalistic survival, and refuse to spend extra effort or money to move up the social ladder, which they saw as being already out of their reach.]

In Hong Kong, the new framework is based on the EDB's 2008 Moral and Civic Education Framework.

The learning objectives in the older framework included "respecting human rights" and learning about the Motherland "through critical thinking". These wordings are no longer found in the new document; instead, a new objective is added: "love the country, love Hong Kong".
