Civilian compares ill-managed Owners’ Incorporation to worsening public administration in Hong Kong since 1997

On March 31, 2020, riot police barged into Glorious Garden in Tuen Mun, intercepted and arrested at least 4 people. During the operation, police deployed pepper-spray and raised the blue warning flag, ordering onlooking residents to leave.

Distressed residents attempted to ask Owners’ Incorporation and Management office of the housing estate for an explanation, only to find a long list of “bad debts” on the financial records of the Incorporation.

Contesting candidate, Kwan Siu-kee confessed that he used to treat Glorious Garden as merely a premise for him to stay in before and after work, never paying real attention to affairs concerning building management of the housing estate. Kwan paused and remarked, “Just like a reflection of what’s been ongoing in Hong Kong, if my generation were doing more before the Handover, Hong Kong wouldn't be suffering like this.”

Police officer mocks visually impaired lawyer and demands her to take out artificial eye

In the video, Joy Luk, a visually impaired lawyer and a keen supporter of the pro-democracy movement, gave an account of her grievous experience when lodging a complaint about the police misconduct in a police station.

Not only did the police officer keep questioning the validity of her statement, the officer even went on to mock whether she was genuinely blind. In despair and feeling extremely humiliated, Luk had to take out her artificial eyes and display them on the table.

HK Authorities Freeze
#JimmyLai's assets under #NationalSecurityLaw

On the evening of May 14, 2021, the Hong Kong government has frozen Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai's personal assets under the national security law. This is the first time the authorities exercise this power, since the national security law was directly imposed by Beijing on Hong Kong without passing through the city's legislature in June 2020.

Lai is currently serving a 14-month sentence after being convicted of taking part in "unauthorised assemblies" during the pro-democracy movement in August 2019.

In a press release, the Security Bureau said Lai's shares of Next Digital Limited (282) and assets of three companies in local banks were all frozen. The value of the property frozen was not disclosed.

Apple Daily said Lai holds a 71 percent stake in #NextDigital, but the incident does not involve the account of Next Digital and the finances of #AppleDaily.

Whereas Article 6 of Hong Kong Basic Law indicates that the Hong Kong SAR government "protect the right of private ownership of property in accordance with law", the Security Bureau cited Article 43 of the national security law, claiming that “relevant persons and organisations must not, directly or indirectly, deal with certain property which is reasonably suspected to be related to offences endangering national security”.

Moreover, the Secretary for Security has the power to order police officers to seize property if he suspects it may be removed from Hong Kong.

U.S. will not leave Australia alone to face China coercion -Blinken

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Thursday that the United States would not leave Australia alone in the face of economic coercion from China, and that such behavior toward U.S. allies would hamper improvement in U.S.-Sino relations.

Washington has repeatedly criticized what it says are Beijing's attempts to bully neighbors with competing interests, and U.S. President Joe Biden has sought to bolster ties with allies in the Indo-Pacific to counter China's growing power.

"I reiterated that the United States will not leave Australia alone on the field, or maybe I should say alone on the pitch, in the face of economic coercion by China," Blinken said at a press briefing with visiting Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne.

Chinese University Professor Participates in Beijing's #ThousandTalentsProgram by Developing Scientific Expertise for China in the #US

In the United States, Song-Guo Zheng, a 58 year-old rheumatology professor and researcher with strong ties to China, was sentenced to 37 months in prison for making false statements to federal authorities as part of an immunology research fraud scheme. He admitted his plan to use approximately $4.1 million in grants from the U.S. National Institute of Health (#NIH) to develop China’s expertise in the areas of rheumatology and immunology.

Zheng was arrested Friday, May 22, 2020, in Anchorage, Alaska, when he was fleeing to China. He was carrying three large bags, one small suitcase and a briefcase containing two laptops, three cell phones, several USB drives, several silver bars, expired Chinese passports for his family, deeds for property in China and other items.

Zheng was a professor of internal medicine who led a team conducting autoimmune research at The Ohio State University and Pennsylvania State University; however, since 2013, Zheng had been participating in a #ChineseTalentPlan, a program established by the Chinese government to recruit individuals with knowledge or access to foreign technology intellectual property.

Assistant Attorney General John C. Demers for the Justice Department said, “American research funding is provided by the American taxpayer for the benefit of American society — not as an illicit gift to the Chinese government."

Chinese buying up land around military bases in Japan: Report

Japan has unearthed at least 700 Chinese-funded instances of plots of land changing hands near military bases, in a government investigation prompted by security concerns, a newspaper reports.

The investments and purchase plans were driven by Chinese-led foreign corporations and could pose a risk to Japan’s safety, the Sankei Shimbun reported Thursday.

Leaked list reveals details of over 10,000 #Uyghurs detained in China’s #Xinjiang province

//Researchers estimate over one million Uyghurs and other mostly Muslim minorities are being held in a secretive network of detention centres and prisons, ostensibly as part of an anti-terrorism campaign after a series of attacks.

Yet information on the crackdown in Xinjiang region -- and those who have been ensnared by it -- is closely guarded by China's Communist authorities.

The previously unreported database, which has been seen by AFP, lists over 10,000 imprisoned Uyghurs from southwestern Xinjiang's Konasheher county.

A second suspected leaked police database seen by AFP identifies another 18,000 Uyghurs, mostly from Kashgar and Aksu prefectures, detained between 2008 and 2015...//

«Hong Kong has been transformed into a police state»

The President of the Federation of Asian Bishops Conferences, cardinal Charles Maung Bo, speaks out following the arrest of cardinal Joseph Zen: «I express my profound concern about the threats to religious freedom in Hong Kong». «For the people of Hong Kong it is now increasingly difficult to speak out freely, so those of us outside Hong Kong who have a voice must use it on their behalf». «I call on Catholics and the wider Christian community around the world to pray for Hong Kong, especially for Cardinal Zen, on 24 May»
