The Second Anniversary of Hong Kong's Pro-democracy Movement: Memories don’t fade, Revisiting #LennonWalls from 2019

During the #AntiELAB movement in 2019, citizens in Hong Kong spontaneously built Lennon Walls all over the city to make their voices heard.

Harvey, a photographer, visited many areas of the city and took hundreds of shots to record every detail of the Lennon Walls. The photos were stitched together to become panoramic images of the Walls.

With Harvey’s permission, Stand News was able to share three of his works as an interactive webpage for readers to visit these virtually rebuilt Lennon Walls from 2019.

China applauds Canadian senators who voted against genocide motion as 'people of vision'

China's foreign ministry is praising Canadian senators who voted down a motion to label the Chinese government's treatment of Uyghurs as genocide — calling them "people of vision" who see through "the despicable schemes of a few anti-China forces."

A spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry said Wednesday that the defeat of Motion 79 — which called on the Senate to recognize that China's government is perpetrating a genocide against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims — shows that the "the hype of 'genocide' in Xinjiang is unpopular and doomed to fail."

"We urge some Canadian politicians to respect facts, stop the clumsy trick of attacking China for their selfish political gains, and stop interfering in China's internal affairs under the pretext of human rights," said ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin.

Discriminatory Treatment: HK Authorities Approve Pro-Beijing Events while Banning Pro-democracy March

In 2021, the annual July 1 March was for the first time banned by the police. While the authorities used epidemic prevention as a reason to ban public events, the flag raising ceremony and the cocktail reception celebrating the establishment of the HKSAR were exempted.

According to the Home Affairs Department, celebrating the "Hong Kong-China reunification" is a key event.

#JudicialReview Denied After HK's Secretary of Justice Decides to Not Prosecute Arrestees in #AnimalAbuse Case

In Hong Kong in February 2020, two people were arrested in an alleged animal abuse case in Sum Tseng HongKong Garden, after 30 injured and dead animals were found in a nearby hillside of the housing estate.

However, the Secretary of Justice in Hong Kong has decided that nobody is to be prosecuted in this case.

A citizen who adopted an injured cat in the case applied for a judicial review at the High Court.

On June 30, 2021, Judge Lee Won-tung announced that the judicial review was denied. Lee emphasized that the Secretary of Justice is "not obligated" to explain her decision within a certain amount of time. Even if the applicant wins the judicial review, the court claimed that nobody can be prosecuted due to the "statute of limitations".

Chinese Professor Lists "Reporting Crime to the Natioanl Security Bureau" in her CV

Wei Li works as an assistant professor at the Department of Politics and Administration of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK) in Hong Kong. Her controversial behaviour has been reported by the media since the Anti-ELAB Movement in 2019.

Previously, Li has made comments against the pro-democracy protests. She, for instance, criticised students protesting against the #NationalSecurityLaw as "wasting time, shortening life span".

Li also openly mentioned her "consumption" of the food offerings from the pro-democracy protesters to the deceased. In a Facebook group, Li claimed to have taken the food away from the altar set up by protesters, arousing the discontent in the community.

Recently, she mentioned in her academic CV on the university's webpage that she has been reporting "law-breaking incidents" and advicing the National Security Police Department.

In January 2021, a video went viral on the Internet, capturing a 39-year-old woman argueing with a MTR staff after she was caught using a senior transport card. It was reported that Wei Li was that woman.

Uneasy and Puzzled, Student Politicism 'Testing the Bottom Line', Wong Yat-chin: Imprisonment is my Atonement

Translated by Guardians of Hong Kong , November 10, 2021 • 1 December 2021

In one whole year after the National Security Law (NSL) took effect the civilian society slipped into a panic state with political figures continually got arrested or left Hong Kong while political parties and organizations got disbanded. Among this misery, Student Politicism (SP) was established in May 2020 when the National Congress was about to pass the NSL bill. Within only one year WONG Yat-chin, the convenor, was already arrested for four times - the latest two within only a week in June. SP suddenly becomes one of the “most upfront” political organizations.

Hong Kong Authorities Seal Off Wanchai North to 'welcome' Xi Jinping

Since June 29, 2022, Hong Kong police sealed off a large area completely including car ways and pavements in Wanchai North, to prepare for the arrival of the Chinese Communist Party (#CCP) leader #XiJinPing. From the midnight of June 30, the Exhibition and Convention Center station will also be closed.

On July 1, Xi will be present at the Exhibition and Convention Center to observe the ceremony celebrating the establishment day of the Hong Kong SAR and the officiation of the new Chief Executive.

On the eve of July 1, Hong Kong police sent in the anti-terrorism squad to patrol the area in their new uniform. Police dogs were also deployed. Reporters on the flyover were stopped and searched for 4 times.

During Xi's visit to Hong Kong, the metro will not stop at the
Exhibition and Convention Center station until 2pm on July 1. Buses will also be rerouted.

It was reported that some pro-democracy groups like the League of Social Democrats were warned by the authorities of the consequence of carrying out protests on the day.

Two Year-mark of #NationalSecurityLaw and 25th Anniversary of the #TransferOfSovereignty: 126 People Charged, 83 in Detention and 63 Involved in Literary Inquisition

Two years ago on July 1, 2020, the National Security Law imposed by Beijing without passing through Hong Kong's legislature was enforced in the city. Authorties in Hong Kong and China claimed that the criminalisation of speech would not happen and the law would "only affect a small number of people". They also claimed that the rights and freedom of Hong Kong people will not be affected.

As of June 29, 2022, however, at least 198 people have been arrested for "violating national security" in the past two years. Among them 126 people and 5 companies — including #AppleDaily, #StandNews and the #Alliance — were prosecuted. 83 of them have been taken into custody and more than half have been detained for more than one year. The longest period of detention is 660 days and is still counting.

Among these cases, almost the entire pro-democracy camp has been "locked up" due to the primary election. Pro-democracy and independent news outlet like Apple Daily and Stand News were shut down; meanwhile, court procedures are progressing very slowly.

This marks the 25 years since the #1997TransferOfSovereignty of Hong Kong to China.

[Editor’s Note: Compared to the commonly used term “handover”, the term “Transfer of Sovereignty of Hong Kong to China” conveys aptly the complexity of multi-sided perspectives that is the “handover”, and shows as much neutrality regarding the issue at the whole. Chinese Communist Leader VS British Royal Visits to Hong Kong

On June 30, 2022, Chinese Communist party (#CCP) leader #XiJinping visited Hong Kong on the 25th aaniversary of the transfer of soveignty of Hong Kong. He was received by officials of the Hong Kong SAR and the so-called "citizens representatives". Meanwhile, roads were blocked around "important locations", and a massive number of police were deployed. July 1 also marks two year since Beijing's enforcement of the #NationalSecurityLaw in Hong Kong.

This is very different from even the British royal visits to Hong Kong before 1997, as shown in the RFA video.
