Senior Citizen Gestures "5+1" Handsign

Four members of Tin Shui Wai Connection including Ng Kin-wei, Lam Chun, Leon Kwun and Frasier Hau, marched from YOHO mall to Yuen Long Police Station, with an aim to file a complaint about the alleged Triad-police collusion on 21 July, 2019. However, they were encircled and intercepted by many riot police. It was the third time on the same day that police intercepted and issued penalty tickets to them, citing group gathering restrictions (599G) which apply to more than 4 people.

Police hoisted the blue flag, calling the march illegal.

At 1843, shops started to shut down as the police extended their cordon line to the main road.

At 1900 at Yau San Street, the four members of Tin Shui Wai Connection were still encircled by the police. A senior citizen held the "5+1" hand gesture, symbolizing "five demands, no one less" in Hong Kong's pro-democracy protest. Police demanded her to leave by citing the gathering ban.

On a Sunday at 18:29 on Yau Sun Street in Yuen Long, police targeted a civilian after the police heard a question from the civilian.

One police officer was emotionally unstable and asked his peers to film the civilians but without citing specific reason. The question was where police were at Yuen Long attack on 21 July last year.

On July 19, 2020, netizens called for a march to commemorate the victims including protesters, train passengers and passersby attacked by the white-clad mob in Yuen Long on July 21, 2019, when police allegedly turned a blind eye to the assaults.

District Councillors Explain Why They Stopped Marching But Are Still Arrested by the Police Afterwards

At Yau Sun Street in Yuen Long, two district councillors, Ng Kin-wai and Hau Man-kin, members of Tin Shui Wai Connection, spoke to the press at 19:06 on July 19, 2020, "The police warned us that If we move forward, they will arrest us, but they didn't provide us with any reason. We have to stop even there were only four people marching, or we didn't chant any slogan.”

The two explained that they stopped marching as they didn't want to cause any risk to nearby civilians and journalists. The district councillors hoped the public would not forget what happened on 21 July, 2019 and the fight for justice would go on.

Japanese Government Gives Money to Corporations to Move Production Lines out of China. First Batch of 87 Corporations Receive 70 Billion Yen Worth of Subsidy

The Japanese government will launch a subsidy scheme to encourage Japanese manufacturers to move their Chinese production lines back to Japan, in a bid to ensure the stability of its supply chains and reduce reliance on China.

Bloomberg reported that last Friday (17th July), Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) announced the first batch of 57 corporations to receive subsidy for moving their factories back to Japan. Among them are face mask manufacturer Iris Ohyama Inc., also known as Iris China in Mainland China, as well as electronic products corporation Sharp Corp. This batch of corporations will receive a subsidy totalling 57.4 billion yen (USD$536 million).

Under government subsidy, Iris Ohyama Inc. plans to produce its face masks in its headquarters’ Kakuda Factory in the Miyagi Prefecture in Northern Japan. It will source all raw materials locally and will not rely on any overseas suppliers.

The METI also announced that 30 corporations, including optical equipment manufacturer Hoya, will receive government subsidy to move their production lines from China to Vietnam, Myanmar, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries. The exact amount of the subsidy was not disclosed.

U.S. charges four Chinese nationals charged in global hacking campaign

Four Chinese nationals have been charged in a global hacking campaign aimed at dozens of companies, universities and government agencies in the United States and abroad, the U.S. Justice Department said on Monday.

The charges were announced as the United States and a coalition of allies on Monday accused China's Ministry of State Security of a global cyber hacking campaign, specifically attributing a large Microsoft attack disclosed earlier this year to hackers working on Beijing's behalf.

The hacking was sponsored by the Ministry of State Security and focused on information that would significantly benefit Chinese companies and businesses, including research and development processes, according to the indictment cited by the Justice Department.

Alleged Pro-Beijing Groups Registered as "Corporate Voters": "Come when you find our address"

On July 18, 2021, the Hong Kong government's Registration and Electoral Office (#REO) announced the 2021 Election Committee subsector (#ECSS) provisional register of voters.

Among them, 404 groups identify themselves as "grassroots associations" that belong to the third category of "corporate voters". The names of these groups include "Happy Family", "Family with Fate", "the Best People", "Enjoy Together", "Team Modern Moms", and "Friends of Tai Kok Tsui".

For most of them, relevant information and contact details cannot be found on the internet.

The Stand News made a phone inquiry to one of these groups called "Enjoy Together" on July 19, asking for the identities of the chairperson, their events organised and the time of their establishment; however, the person answering the call responded vaguely.

In their social media platform, the group has mostly reposted messages from an ousted pro-Beijing district councillor Chow Chun-fai in Sham Shui Po since 2017.

The Stand News was asked by the group to contact other members or to send a letter. At the same time, the group refused to give details of other members nor that of the chairperson. "Come when you find our address," the group said.

France, South Pacific nations to combat 'predatory' fishing as China extends reach

French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday France and South Pacific nations would launch a South Pacific coastguard network to counter "predatory" behaviour, which an adviser said was aimed at illegal fishing, as China expands its maritime reach.

The United States and allies including France, Japan, Australia and New Zealand, are actively expanding their activity in the Pacific to counter China's influence.

Though tiny in land mass, Pacific islands control vast swaths of resource-rich ocean called Exclusive Economic Zones, forming a formidable boundary between the Americas and Asia.

US bill that could close Hong Kong’s trade offices advances in Senate; gov’t slams ‘gross interference’

The proposed bill would require the White House to remove the immunities granted to Hong Kong trade offices in the US if it decided that “Hong Kong no longer enjoys a high degree of autonomy” from Beijing.

A draft bill that could shut down Hong Kong’s economic and trade offices in the US was approved by the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs last Thursday, bringing it closer to becoming law. The action was strongly condemned by the Hong Kong government and the city’s commerce chief.
