Data Storage Reduced To 3 Months: HK Academics Promise to Stand Their Ground In Representing Public Opinion
The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) was investigated by the Hong Kong police force in early 2021 because of its involvement in the democratic primary election case.
Dr. Robert Chung Ting-yiu, President and Chief Executive Officer at the HKPORI, said on April 1, 2021 that he would continue to uphold the spirit of science and democracy in conducting opinion polls.
With concern for the privacy of the respondents, he decided to shorten the storage period of the research data from 6 months to 3 months.
Chung said that even though the environment in Hong Kong is getting harsher HKPORI will hold fast to their post, "If we were to give up, it would be like asking the Hong Kong people to give up.”
Dr. Chung Kim Wah, Deputy executive director of the HKPORI, expressed that the research institute will continue to uphold the scientific spirit, while sparing no efforts in handling online opinions and constructive criticism. He also said that he used to have hope for the "one country, two systems" when he was in university, and never thought Hong Kong would become what it is today, “If people in power abuse the law, they may even accuse those who participate in international public opinion research organization of colluding with foreign forces.”
He also reminded the Hong Kong people to “Stand fast to your own post and face the situation openly”. He emphasized that HKPORI will continue to work with different organizations to represent the public’s view and opinion on social policies, “so as not to bring the civil society to its knees”.

Scholar: Hongkongers Boo Chinese National Anthem in form of Resistance
Dr Kim-Wah Chung, Deputy of the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#PORI) was recently invited to web media programme titled "In- and Outside the Council".
Chung described how Hongkongers entrusted the emotions from the pro-demicracy protest by cheering slogans like "Keep Fighting, Hong Kong" during the Tokyo Olympics Games.
Chung pointed out that booing the Chinese National Anthem was a misbehaviour in the past but has now become popular.
He said the authorities should "think about the reason behind it", and the responsibilities they bore.
Chung said that the PRC's national sports team performed well in recent years, but he also pointed out that "if a regime tries to cover up something through sports achievement", there no interest to show support for them".
He then used PRC athlete Chen Qingchen who swore a lot during the competition, as an example of the
misbehaviour of the Chinese sportsmen under "wolf warrior position".
Nowadays, the Chinese netizens showing their supports to Chen while publicly denouncing the artists who support Taiwanese sportsmen. Chung described it as "unreasonable".
He believed that the atmosphere in China in recent years has turned many thing in the name of "insulting China", similar to the ban on shouting 'HKers, never give up' as Hong Kong Independent", showing the extreme ethnic emotion. He indicated that the Chinese government more or less enhances this phenomenon, but the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. "It is the expansion of self-consciousness, which is dangerous."

57% Hongkongers tend to "live with COVID" as "zero-COVID" is unreachable
The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI), a research institution in Hong Kong, conducted a survey by asking 7,000 Hong Kong citizens to evaluate the existing COVID19 measures.
57% of the respondents believe that "living with the virus" is more realistic than having zero COVID19 cases. Almost 90% of the pro-democratic citizens shared this view.
Among the non-democratic supporters, 40% supported the view of "living with the virus" and while another 40% looked for a "zero case" scenario.
The supporters and the opponents to the implementation of population-wide compulsory testing are divided into 41% in respective fraction; however, the opposition to other COVID-19 measures was more than half.
55% of the respondents oppose "3-dose vaccination". 53% of them disagree to shut down more venues. At last, 54% of them do not want gathering regulation to be tightened.
The survey reveals that the people opt for "living with the virus" as having "zero COVID cases" is almost impossible due to the continuous mutation,
The spokeperson of the institute Dr Chung Kim-Wah pointed out that there is a gap between "believing that the policy is helpful" and "supporting the policy". This reflects the tendency of Hong Kong people to take risks in order to return to their normal life.

Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institution's (#HKPORI) survey showed that the latest popularity rating of Chief Executive Carrie Lam is 31.9 marks, with 34% of respondents giving her 0 mark. Lam's net popularity stands at negative 53 percentage points.
On a scale of 0 to 10, people’s ratings on the five core social indicators ranked from the highest to the lowest are “rule of law” (5.13), “freedom” (5.09), “prosperity” (4.97), “stability” (4.94) and “democracy” (4.25).
Compared to the last survey, the rating of “efficiency” dropped significantly, while the ratings of “social welfare sufficiency”, “civilization”, “efficiency” and “equality” have all registered all-time lows since records began in 1997.
As for the ten freedom sub-indicators, freedom of “speech”, “freedom to strike”, “association”, “press”, “publication” and “procession and demonstration” all score lower than 5 marks.
Freedom of “entering or leaving Hong Kong” has dropped significantly when compared to the last survey and registered a historical low since records began in 1997.
PORI successfully interviewed 1,012 Hong Kong residents by a random telephone survey conducted by real interviewers in early February.

On March 11, the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#HKPORI) announced its decision to cancel a press briefing initially scheduled in the afternoon on "Russian-Ukraine Invasion".
Dr Kim-Wah Chung, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of HKPORI explained that a fake draft questionnaire of the survey has gone vital since morning.
The fake questionnaire has sparked off a wave of criticisms among pro-establishment media outlets, including CCP mouthpiece in Hong Kong. Some alleged that the questionnaire could risk violating the National Security Law.
Chung, however, rebuffed that the draft questionnaire circulated online was fabricated and it did not exist. He called these news reports deliberate smear attempts targeting HKPORI.
Chung went on challenged integrity of SpeakOut.HK, a pro-government online media, which was the first one that started the chain of media reports surrounding the fake questionnaire.
Chung asked, "isn't fact-check fundamental to any press reports."

The Fund provided legal and financial assistance to more than 2,200 people prosecuted for their part in the 2019 pro-democracy protests.
"Although it remains uncertain whether Xi Jing-ping would be in Hong Kong," Chung elaborated, "the period before July 1, say May and June would be sensitive times when National Security Department may take organised efforts to silence dissidents in Hong Kong."

香港民意研究所前副行政總裁鍾劍華博士接受《追新聞》回應指，外間盛傳國家主席習近平於7月1日主權移交25周年到香港出席典禮，他認為國安處高調拘捕612基金5名信託人，是要為習洗太平地，「雖然未肯定習近平係咪會去香港，但7月1日前，5、6月都會係危險，相信國安處會有連串行動去洗太平地，唔畀香港有其他聲音。」
