20 police surround civilians for putting up Emperor of Viruses poster in Kwun Tong, one arrested and fined

In the afternoon of April 17, there were several men putting up posters near Tung Yan Street, Kwun Tong, also known as the Kwun Tong Lennon Wall.

Those posters include one named “Xi Jinping, Emperot of Viruses” created by a political cartoonist “Rebel Pepper”.

Not long after, a police emergency unit vehicle arrived at the location, 20 officers surrounded the group of civilians and covered some of the pictures with black garbage bags.

It was reported that one person was arrested, and Kwun Tong District Council Member Edith Leung later posted on Facebook saying that the man was released but fined with $1,500.

At a later time, Stand News reporter found that the black garbage bags had been torn away but the posters were also damaged.

UK moves to drop #Huawei as 5G vendor, citing China coronavirus transparency

//The UK is moving to drop Huawei as a vendor for the country’s 5G cellphone network in a major blow to Communist China over poor coronavirus transparency...

UK foreign minister Dominic Raab said that “we can’t have business as usual after this crisis,” vowing “hard questions” for China and a “very, very deep dive” on the origins of the pandemic...

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Apr 17 that the pandemic originating in China shows why countries should avoid doing business with Huawei. President Trump suspended US funding for the World Health Organization this week, alleging it circulated false Chinese data on COVID-19, leaving other nations unprepared.

The US viewed Johnson’s decision on Huawei as a major blow to the “five eyes” electronic surveillance alliance among the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. US officials fear China could use Huawei to collect intelligence.//

China’s surveillance system of ‘social credit’ has expanded globally and is now openly operational in Western Canada.

China’s Orwellian “social credit system” that records the social and financial behaviour of individuals and corporations across China, using a vast surveillance system, has expanded globally, and is now openly operational at the renowned Haidilao hot pot restaurant, in Western Canada.

Ryan Pan, a manager with Haidilao Hot Pot in Vancouver confirmed that over 60 surveillance cameras have been installed in the restaurant at the request of the Haidilao corporation, as part of the social credit system in China. He said that the Vancouver location has 30 tables with two cameras assigned to each table.

When asked specifically why Haidilao required so many cameras to monitor staff and patrons, Ryan Pan said that the cameras were installed to “punish” staff if they didn’t adhere to corporate standards and to “people track”. Pan also said that the video is sent back to China but declined to say why this was, other than to say the reason for this was “secret.”

The U.S. said China continues to focus its policies on exports, and called on its biggest economic rival to implement forceful measures to boost domestic demand.

Huawei defense to ask Canada court for delay in CFO's extradition hearings

The defense team for Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, will ask a Canadian court to delay upcoming hearings in her U.S. extradition case, the court said on Friday.

Meng's U.S. extradition hearings have lasted more than two years and she is scheduled to be back in the British Columbia Supreme Court on April 26.

A source familiar with the matter told Reuters the application was a result of an agreement announced last week in a Hong Kong court between Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HWT.UL) and HSBC (HSBA.L) regarding publication of internal documents relating to the fraud allegations against Meng

1 km queue of Filipinos in Hong Kong for #Philippines Presidential Election

The #Philippines presidential election will be held on #May09, and the overseas voting starts from #Apr10 to #May09. Over 90 thousands Filipinos in Hong Kong have the right to vote.

There was a 1 km queue outside the voting station at Kennedy Town at 10am on 17 April.

Some domestic workers were shocked about the cold atmosphere of Hong Kong Chief Executive election, believing the public grievance was due to their lack of right to vote.

Some of them were satisfied with their voting rights, hoping the new Philippines President can bring changes to the Philippines.

The presidential election is to select the President, Vice-president, senators and local officials. There are six Philippine President candidates, including Bongbong Marcos, son of former president Marcos, current vice-president Leni Robredo, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who came from the grassroots, retired boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, and senator Panfilo Lacson.
