Daisy Wong, HK Writer Criticized Médecins Sans Frontières being Hypocrite

Editor's Note: At 17:30 on 19-Nov, 4 members from MSF entered the Polytechnic University. They have not responded to any of the press's questions. Citizens criticised it was a PR action and merely for convincing the public not to cut the donations.

(18 Nov) Daisy Wong’s Facebook post:
Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) once asked me for help with fund-raising. Hong Kong has now become Uganda. A war correspondent says Hong Kong Police are even more terrible than ISIS. The lives of the students who are being trapped in Polytechnic University are in grave danger. I have sent an emergency email to the MSF and asked them to send medical teams there to save lives. It is entirely based on humanitarianism, not politics. Isn’t it the purpose of MSF? Ask for help when they need funds; disappear when lives are at stake.

The email:

Dear [redacted] and the MSF team,
The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is sieged. Lots of people are injured. It is a critical situation. As a humanitarian medical organisation, can you send medical teams immediately to save people there?

Hong Kong has been in a humanitarian crisis for five months. What has the MSF done for the people in Hong Kong since June?

I am looking forward to your reply. Thank you.

Daisy

Public outrage as MSF refused to step in

Editor’s Note: MSF charter states that it “provides assistance to populations in distress, victims of natural or man-made disasters and victims of armed conflict […] "irrespective" of race, religion, creed or political convictions.”, however, its evaluation on Hong Kong situation does not quite seem to match its aim.

(19 Nov) On 18 November 2019, Sam Taylor, executive director of the Hong Kong arm of international medical humanitarian organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) published a statement responding to public enquiries regarding its alleged inaction towards the current situation in Hong Kong. In the statement he stated that “there has been immense support amongst Hong Kong local responders and the resources and capacity to help are significant”, and will take actions if there is a huge gap of medical needs in Hong Kong.

Netizens replying to the statement on Facebook were mostly dissatisfied and disappointed with MSF, with several declaring that they would terminate their monthly donations to MSF. A donar showed his/her disappointment towards MSF, “They can support as far away as to Africa, but they turn a blind eye to what is happening downstairs in Hong Kong”. A netizen commented, “Hong Kongers have been donating so much money to you every year, yet when Hong Kong is in trouble, your response is not ‘giveback’ but ‘give up’ ”. Another comment, which received over 11,000 likes, stated: “understood, we have also assessed that the funds of Doctors Without Borders are sufficient, with no major donation gap; we would prioritise donating resources to other organisations.”

According to public records, Hong Kong’s contribution to MSF is very high. Based on MSF 2018 annual audit report, Hong Kong has over 203,000 active monthly donors, with donation income totalling HKD 518 million in 2018, coming in tenth place among donor countries, but second place if calculated on a per capita basis, just behind Switzerland.

On 19 November 2019, a day after the statement was published, four MSF doctors wearing blue helmets and holding suitcases entered PolyU at 4 pm, stating that they were here to observe. A reporter of Hong Kong In-Media had asked MSF to response to the matter, but MSF office staff indicated that the Communication department is currently very busy and asked the reporter to leave his contact details and questions; however, no response was given before the publishing of the article.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) turned its back on Hong Kong Medical Crisis

(19 Nov) Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been contributing to worldwide humanitarian relief and providing assistance to people of conflicts. However, its responses to recent Hong Kong is disappointing. Given the situation in Hong Kong appears to be worsening in the past few months and the tear gas deployment by Hong Kong riot police has been the “world-firstagainst population density, my friends from Iraq, Syria and the Federal Republic of Somalia also warned that Hong Kong has been an uninhabitable war zone, especially for children and elderly. In fact, loads of Hong Kong medical workers have been providing assistance to people at the frontline of the conflicts in certain adverse condition, but they were treated as “one of those rioters” by the Hong Kong Police Force. Days ago, the police arrested tens of medical volunteers in Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), leading to the delay in humanitarian aid. These volunteers may even be charged with rioting over the protests, as defined by Secretary for Security, Mr. John Lee Ka-chiu. Looking around the world, it is totally inconceivable!
