Terry Glavin: When will Canada join the rest of the democratic join the rest of the democratic world in standing up to China?
After 18-months of massive anti-regime protests, the way of ending democracy in Hong Kong was four lawmakers were disqualified by Beijing and remaining pro-democracy legislative council members have resigned en masses. Itās not just about Hong Kong. Itās about Xinjiang and Chinaās takeover of key United Nations agencies, its abusive manipulations of the World Trade Organization, and its āhostage diplomacyā in one country after another.
Justin Trudeauās government canāt follow the allies of āFive-Eyesā to ban Huawei in the core 5G internet connectivity technology. Canada lacks a foreign-agents registration law.
It remains to be seen whether Canada will join the consensus, or remain on outlier.

For the First Time, Canada Acknowledges Chinaās Operation Fox Hunt Causes Threat, Urges Nationals to Report Cases
Following the US, the Canadian government has also acknowledged that Chinaās Operation Fox Hunt had been causing threats, pointing out that China targeted at individuals in the Chinese-Canadian Community through plainclothes national security personnel or ātrusted agentsā. The Canadian authority criticised this action as threatening to national security and Canadaās sovereignty and the safety of its people, and urged victims to report their cases.
In response to The Globe and Mailās inquiry on Chinaās Operation Fox Hunt, John Townsend, the spokesperson of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, said that some countries, including China, routinely sent plainclothes national security personnel or ātrusted agentsā to other countries to make threats, silence dissidents or suppress political opponents, instilling fear in other countries. He said, āThese activities constitute a threat to Canadaās sovereignty and to the safety of Canadians.ā
Townsend refused to reveal the number of Canadians targeted by Operation Fox Hunt, but urged Chinese Canadians and local Chinese nationals to report any cases of threats or intimidations by China, āThese individuals, for various reasons, may not have the means to protect themselves or do not know they can report these activities to Canadian authorities. The fear of state-backed or state-linked retribution targeting both them and their loved ones, in Canada and abroad, can force individuals to submit to foreign interference.ā

The US, Japan and Other Allies of Taiwan Give Speech at WHA in Support of Taiwan
The World Health Assembly (WHA) has held its online conference earlier this week. The US previously urged the WHA to invite Taiwan to participate as an observer, but the appeal was rejected by the World Health Organization (WHO). Nonetheless, the US, Japan, and a number of countries with diplomatic ties with Taiwan spoke up for Taiwan during their speeches at the conference. The Central News Agency (from Taiwan) reported that during the speeches that supported Taiwan, the assembly stopped the live broadcasting twice, citing the reason that they were irrelevant to the agenda.
During the conference, Garrett Grigsby, Director of the Office of Global Affairs in the US Department of Health and Human Services, expressed that Taiwan has made impressive achievements in combatting the COVID pandemic. He said that it would be beneficial to the response to the pandemic if WHO members could understand and take reference from Taiwanās experience. Instead, WHOās blocking of Taiwan from participating in the conference as an observer was counterproductive. Grigsby emphasised that while each country worked to strengthen its capacity under the pandemic, countries should also share information about the pandemic and develop a transparent global architecture to detect threats early and prevent the further spreading of the virus.

MPs calling it a "moral obligation" to extend UKās settlement route for Hong Kong youngsters
//An amendment to the Nationality and Borders Bill, tabled by Conservative MP Damian Green and supported by Tom Tugendhat and 11 other Tory MPs, would enable Hong Kongers with at least one parent who is a BNO citizen to apply for a UK visa.
It comes after The Independent revealed last month that Young Hong Kongers who fled police brutality are ālanguishingā in the UK asylum system because they are not able to benefit from the British National Overseas (BNO) scheme due to their age.
If the amendment were accepted, it would enable those born after 1997 to resettle in Britain on the basis of the BNO status of one or both of their parents, rather than having to travel with them.
Many of these young people may well have been involved in the protests and therefore some of them have already suffered from the new security law, and others may in the future
Home Office figures show there was an almost 500 per cent increase in asylum claims from Hong Kong nationals in the year to June 2021, rising to 124 from 21 the previous year. Fourteen of these were unaccompanied minors ā the first time on record that the UK has received asylum claims from children from the city state. //
