China's Procuratorate Removes Lawyers Hired by Detainees' Families

China has detained 12 Hong Kong pro-democract activists in Shenzhen for over 72 days. The lawyers hired by their families have recently lodged complaints against China's Yantian District Detention Center for unlawful acts, as they have been rejected demand for information about the state-appointed lawyers. The lawyers suspected that the Chinese authorities have deceived them.

One of the lawyers said that the Procuratorate in China told them over the phone on Nov 2, 2020 that their clients [detained Hongkongers] had "already hired two lawyers", so that they were no longer representing the lawyer. The lawyers described such reply as 'totally irrelevant to the inquiry '.

While the 12 Hongkongers are still held incommunicado in Shenzhen, the Chinese authorites have repeatedly refused the family-hired lawyers' visits. The lawyers also received calls from China's Ministry of Justice in the past few days, ordering them to terminate their appointments with the detainees.

The detention center claimed that the detainees had hired two lawyers, who are suspected to be the state-appointed lawyers.

China Supporter calls to send #AppleDaily Founder #JimmyLai for trial in China

Hong Kong's media tycoon, Jimmy Lai, aged 73, is charged by the authorities with "collusion with foreign forces to endanger national security". He was denied of bail and remained in custody for a trial in April 2021.

On December 16, 2020, Gu Minkang, a pro-Beijing Chinese scholar, wrote in an article in the China-run newspaper Ta Kung Pao.

Gu questioned that the Hong Kong judiciary could "safeguard national security" by adjudging the cases in a strict manner.

Gu even urged to ask the Communist Chinese Party-controlled judiciary to trial Lai .

Gu further branded Lai as one of the ā€œchief commanders of the anti-China gang that incites unrest in Hong Kongā€ and ā€œthe No. 1 traitor who colludes with foreign forces.ā€

Pompeo demands China to Unconditionally Release of 12 pro-democracy HK activists: They deserve a heroā€™s welcome abroad

US Secretary of State #MikePompeo called for the immediate release of 10 Hong Kong activists who were sentenced to between seven months and three years in jail by a Chinese court.

The ten Hongkongers were arrested by the Chinese authorities arrested at sea as they reportedly fled the city and tried to reach Taiwan by speedboat in August 2020.

On December 30, 3020, the Chinese court in Shenzhen sentenced eight of the Hongkongers to seven months in jail, one to two years and one to three years. Two underage Hongkongers were handed over to Hong Kong police, since they have been detained in China in August 2020.

Pompeo said, "The ā€˜Hong Kong 12ā€™ who tried to flee this tyranny deserved a heroā€™s welcome abroad, not capture, a secret trial and prison sentences."

The United States strongly condemns the Shenzhen courtā€™s actions and calls for the 10 members of the group who were sentenced to jail terms to be immediately and unconditionally released.ā€

ā€œThe CCPā€™s persecution of the Hong Kong 12 ā€“ two of whom were juveniles at the time of their arrest ā€“ exposes once again Beijingā€™s brutality, blatant disregard for the international treaties it has signed, and its disdain for the rights of the Hong Kong people,ā€ Pompeo added.

Pompeo further expressed in the statement, " A regime that prevents its own people from leaving can lay no claim to greatness or global leadership. It is simply a fragile dictatorship, afraid of its own people."

CCP Revokes Human Rights Lawyers' Licence Reportedly for Helping the 12 Pro-democracy Hongkongers

Just five days after the 12 Hong Kong youths were sentenced, Lu Siwei, a Chinese human rights lawyer who assisted one of the arrestees' family had his lawyerā€™s licence revoked by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Justice in China.

Lu was the appointed solicitor for Quinn Moon, who was one of the twelve Hongkongers who were detained in China since August 2020. Lu recived a notice on January 4. 2021 by the Sichuan Provincial Department of Justice, stating that his licence has been revoked.

Lu issued a statement that evening saying that his lawyerā€™s licence was "determined to be revoked" before the case was even filed. He suspected that there is a possible abuse of power and criticized the Chinese government for ā€œinexplicable suppression and persecutionā€. Lu called on the provincial government to ā€œget back on trackā€ and demanded a hearing.

Lu believes that the revocation of his licence was the result of his years in handling human rights cases, and that the 12 Hong Kong youthsā€™ case was the decisive factor. Lu said that he ā€œhas no regretsā€ and he thanked everyone for the attention.

Chinese Human Rights Lawyers Harrassed and Threatened by CCP

The Sichuan based Chinese #HumanRightsLawyer #LuSiWei told Apple Daily that he was being followed by four black-clad men in China since a few days ago.

On January 10, 2021, outside of his residence, his handphone was snatched by another unknown man who subsequently, threw his phone on the ground and ran away. Lu immediately reported the case to a nearby police station.

Lu suspected that these unknown men have been sent by the Chinese police, and that one of the men is a government worker in his district.

He alleged that the incident was connected to his involvement in 'politically sensitive' cases which recently led to revocation of his license.

Calling it an ā€œold fashioned harassmentā€, Lu condemned the series of incidents a serious threat to his personal freedom.

Lu was appointed by the family members of Quinn Moon, one of the 12 Hongkongers whose boat was intercepted by mainland Chinese authorities during a reported ill-fated flee to Taiwan in August 2020
