#CUHK newly elected student union collectively resigns due to harassment and death threats
The newly elected student union “#Syzygia" of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) announced their collective resignation on March 1, 2021.
After they won the election, the University management had immediately cut ties with them. The resignation was due to the legal intimidation and death threats faced by the elected members and their families.
In recent weeks, these student leaders have become the target of the university’s authorities, which released two heavily-worded statements in Feb 2021 condemning the cabinet, for their “possibly unlawful remarks” to media and “political propaganda.”
Issac Lam Yiu-hei, president of the elected student union said cabinet members had felt “increasing political pressure from the university,” which had threatened to “disavow” all student associations if Syzygia refused to withdraw from the election.
