Daughter-in-law of Former CCP's Senior Leader Asks Xi Jiping to Let her Return to the United States
On Christmas eve of 2020, an open letter was sent on Twitter to the Communist Chinese Party (#CCP) leader Xi Jiping, hoping that "the top leader of the country" could "help" the owner of the account and her daughter to leave China, so that she can reunite with her parents in the United States.
The account owner claimed to be the daughter-in-law of Zhou Yonghong, former state councillor and Party Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party who has been in jail for 5 years under accusations of bribery, abuse of power and intentionally disclosing state secrets.
Huang Wan, daughter-in-law of Zhou, said that in December 2013, her whole family was taken away. They then lived at home under surveillance for 10.5 months, and were held in the detention center for more than one year. She was “tortured and abused” by the Public Security system in Hubei, China. She was then sentenced to probation order and spent 3 years under the monitor of the judicial office until June 2019.
After that, she was restricted to leave the country by the Beijing Chaoyang People's Court due to a “civil complaint that has nothing to do with me [her]”. 18 months has already passed, and the case still has not been trialed. Huang suspected that the intention is to keep her in China.
Huang described that the past seven years “felt like hell”. Recently, she was ordered by the Chinese court to evict from her home in ten days.
Despite her US citizenship, she still could not go back to the US because of the Chinesecourt’s travel restriction. She said she felt totally helpless in China.

Prodemocracy activist Andy Li Yu-hin’s case was brought before the court in Hong Kong on March 31, 2021 as he was charged with violating the National Security Law. However, Li did not appear in court because he was still subject to quarantine.
Li had been arrested and jailed in China since August 2020 and was recently transferred by the Chinese authrotities to Hong Kong police's custody, upon completing the sentence he received in the Chinese court. Li is currently detained by the Hong Kong authorities in a psychiatric centre.

The sister of Li told Stand News that barrister Lawrence Law Tat-Hung, who was representing Li in court, was not the lawyer appointed by the family. She further said that she had no knowledge of such a person until she heard it from the news.
Stand News reporters called Lawrence Law Tat-Hung on the morning of March 31, 2021, to inquire whether he had been appointed by Li.
The barrister replied by saying “Excuse me, but I’m not at liberty to say too much”. The reporter also mentioned that Li’s sister did not know him, Law then immediately hung up the phone.
Andy Li was charged with "conspiracy to commit collusion with a foreign country", "conspiracy to assist criminals" and "unlicensed possession of ammunition". The case was heard on the morning of March 31 in the West Kowloon Magistrates' Court.

Hong Kong's courts are experiencing a large backlog of protest-related cases, with some trials scheduled as late as 2024.
The riot case against pro-democracy protesters entering into the Legislative Council (#LegCo) chambers on July 1, 2019, which had its first hearing last week, is scheduled for trial in May 2023, more than 2 years later.
An anonymous barrister pointed out that the jail terms handed out for recent riot cases are 4 to 5 years, though the sentences are often reduced to around 3 years for good behavior in prison.
Time spent in custody while awaiting trial also counts toward time served, therefore some of the accused may have already served their sentences by the time the court has found them guilty. If they are found innocent, however, then "they would have been jailed for nothing these three years. We're talking three years, not a couple of months."
The situation is effectively handing down a punishment before the trial, the barrister said, and is unfair to the accused.
Though some arrestees in riot cases are released on bail, the terms include night-time curfews and prohibitions from being in certain locations, or from leaving the city.
The barrister calls the bail conditions harsh and disruptive to the lives of the accused, "as if it's meant for punishing them first." Bail conditions in other criminal cases are not nearly as numerous or complicated, he says, "I don't quite understand why riot cases nowadays need so many bail conditions."

"Can the judiciary explain the cause of the one hour delay?" citizens in the court complained, "They [the authorities] do not have respect for the attendees at all!"
The court secretary claimed that there was a problem with the communication system.
In the extended court, the speaker was not turned on until 2:46 pm. After that, the court kept repeating the court regulations.
The defendants were sent to the court after the magistrate #LawTakChuenPeter arrived at the courtroom at 3:30pm.
When entering the court room, some defendants raised their hands to thank the citizens who sent a round of encouraging words.
An hour later, the trial did not have much progress. The chief prosecutor #LawTinWah suggested to split the defendants for separate trial. He proposed one of the groups to be on trial again on Feb 8, 2022. At this time, a male voice was heard saying, "get lost", followed by a round of laughter.
The magistrate did not accept the chief prosecutor's suggestion.
One of the barristers representing the defence sternly criticised the prosecution for procrastination, causing the lack of time for lawyers to give legal advice to the defendants. The comment was received with a round of applause. Nevertheless, the prosecution denied.
At around 5pm, another barrister in the defence reiterated that the legal team "eagerly" wished to receive the required documents from the prosecution in the past 8 months, but it did not happen. Another round of applause followed.
Finally, the magistrate called an end to the day's trial after 7 pm. Citizens in court encouraged the defendants and each other, "Keep it up, Hongkongers!" Some sent Birthday wishes to the detained pro-democracy figures.
