Canadian military officer calls for a probe into a ground zero 'Covid' outbreak at Wuhan forces games TWO MONTHS before world was alerted to the 'mysterious new illness'

A Canadian military officer who fears he was at the 'Ground Zero' of Covid two months before China officially acknowledged the virus has demanded an investigation into the suspicious outbreak of illness there.

The long-serving officer, who cannot be named as he is still in the forces, was among the scores of athletes who fell sick with a debilitating illness after attending the World Military Games in Wuhan in October 2019.

He said foreign competitors found the city of 11 million people 'like a ghost town', and so many cases of a mysterious virus afflicted the Canadian team that a quarantine section was set up on their military flight back home.

Now news ‘deeply sorry’ over reporter’s question to HK leader about complaint mechanism for medical staff from China

As the government waived registration requirements for mainland Chinese medics coming to Hong Kong to help treat COVID patients, questions of medical accountability begun to surface. During Carrie Lam's daily pandemic briefing on March 16, a #NowTV reporter asked about the process by which a patient could lodge a complaint, in case of a medical mishap while being treated by a mainland medic.

The question, however, was not well received by the government and the pro-Beijing camp in Hong Kong.

While Carrie Lam stressed a sense of gratitude for China should come first, former chief executive Leung Chun-ying lashed out at the reporter on Facebook, questioning if "her brain had a problem, or her morals had a problem".

Other pro-Beijing groups went on to describe the reporter's question as "unprofessional" and "spreading hate speech."

Politihk Social Strategic, a group of pro-Beijing activists formed to support former CE Leung, claimed that the NowTV reporter had triggered “public anger” with her question.

The group posted photos of the female reporter online, and called for an online petition condemning her conduct as unprofessional and a possible violation of the #NationalSecurityLaw.

Owing to public pressure, the TV station issued a statement of apology on the same day.

“We are deeply sorry that the question about mainland medics at yesterday’s Covid-19 press briefing caused concern and discontent among citizens,” the statement read. “The fifth-wave outbreak is still severe, and we are extremely thankful to the central government and the mainland’s selfless support.”

The Hong Kong Journalists Association (#HKJA) expressed regret for Now TV's apology, as well as concern that such attacks on a journalist's question would exacerbate the self-censorship among editorial staff. The association noted that a similar question was posed by pro-Beijing LegCo member Tang Fei on March 15, the day before the press conference.

The association stressed the journalistic value of posing these questions at press conferences, as it gives officials an opportunity to explain their policies to the public. Furthermore, the question received informative replies, showing that government officials also recognized the question's value. The association hopes that the public could better understand the workings of journalism, and would view the work of reporters without political preconceptions.

World Bank was accused of funding Xinjiang suppression movement

According to #SCMP, a report from #AtlanticCouncil, an American think tank, points out that the clients of International Finance Company (#IFC) which is under #WorldBank, are active participants of #Xinjiang suppression with significant evidence.

China was accused of Xinjiang forcing labour, forcing them to leave their land, eradicating their culture, damaging their environment in this movement.

The researchers call the World Bank to leave the Xinjiang region, claiming that the nearly $500 direct loans and the investment to the Xinjiang companies violate the World Bank's "development finance" criteria.

A #Belgian MP said, "the World Bank is not to fund modern slavery but to support the world development. There is no excuse. We have to force the companies which relate to abusive forcing labour to leave the market."

SCMP reports that the Belgian was sanctioned by China due to launching a debate on the Xinjiang #AllegedGenocide in the Belgian parliament.

"To say that people in a country must support their own country’s government is not patriotism, but a form of slavery" : Vitalik Buterin

The Russian-Canadian, co-founder of Ethereum #blockchain, #VitalikButerin is best known for his creation of the crypto space, dabbling in #Bitcoin. The 28-year-old is one of the youngest billionaires in #cryptocurrency, possessing a net worth more than $1 billion.

Buterin has been vocal on Russian's all-out invasion in Ukrain since February 24. He railed against Russian president Vladimir Putin and the invasion of Ukraine, condemning it as a "crime against the Ukrainian and Russian people".

In his latest post on Twitter, he called on support first for the Ukrainians and those who are protesting against Putin's rule in Russia and Belarus.

Buterin's Twitter post has attracted many Chinese netizens to choke. One of them, dogecoin faith, said in unreasonable grammar, “Aren’t you Russian? You traitor, did Putin have a bad experience with you? “

Buterin didn't turn a blind eye to this provocation. Instead, he addressed the comment and wrote back in simplified Chinese.

He wrote, "To say that people in a country must support their own country’s government is not patriotism, but a form of slavery.”

Buterin continued, "#TruePatriotism sometimes requires confronting the evil emanating from one’s own country. Because in this way, we can help our country become more beautiful.”

Intel deletes mention of Xinjiang in letter after China backlash

US chipmaker Intel has deleted references to Xinjiang from an annual letter to suppliers after the company faced a backlash in China for asking suppliers to avoid the sanctions-hit region.

Last month, Intel was slammed on Chinese social media for a letter to suppliers published on its website. The 23 December letter said Intel had been “required to ensure that its supply chain does not use any labour or source goods or services from the Xinjiang region” following restrictions imposed by “multiple governments”.

#EU has ‘very reliable evidence’ #China is considering military support for #Russia

//EU leaders are in possession of "very reliable evidence" that China is considering military assistance to Russia, a senior EU official told POLITICO, threatening potential trade measures if weapons' deliveries go ahead.

It follows a similar warning from U.S. officials earlier this week that the Russian government had asked China for military equipment and other support, as POLITICO and other media outlets reported. A subsequent Financial Times report said China signaled openness to the request.

"EU leaders have very reliable evidence that China is considering providing military aid to Russia. All the leaders are very aware of what’s going on," the senior EU official said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak publicly about confidential information.

"We are concerned about the fact that China is flirting with the Russians," he added. The EU will "impose trade barriers against China" should Beijing proceed with Russia's request, he said, as "this is the only language Beijing understands."//

Xinjiang anti-terror general to lead China’s Hong Kong garrison

A general who led China’s anti-terrorism special forces in Xinjiang has been named as the new chief of the People’s Liberation Army’s garrison in Hong Kong, state media have reported.

The appointment comes as China toughens its rule in the international business hub, which underwent huge and sometimes violent street protests in 2019. Beijing imposed a controversial national security law in Hong Kong in 2020.

China’s official Xinhua news agency announced on Sunday that Maj Gen Peng Jingtang, the deputy chief of staff of the People’s Armed Police, had been appointed the Hong Kong garrison’s commander by President Xi Jinping.

#InternationalCourt orders Russia to immediately cease invasion in #Ukraine, only Judges of #Russia and #China disagree

On March 17, 2022, the International Court of Justice (#ICJ), the top court of the United Nations, has ordered Russia to “immediately suspend” its military operations in Ukraine.

Of the 15 judges, almost all agreed to order Russia to “immediately suspend” its military operations, except two dissenters: the judges of Russian, Kirill Gevorgian and Chinese, Xue Hanqin.

ICJ rulings are binding under the UN Charter although the international body has no means to enforce it.

"Ukraine gained a complete victory in its case against Russia at the international court of justice,” Ukrainian president #VolodymyrZelenskiy said in a tweet. “Russia must comply immediately. Ignoring the order will isolate Russia even further.”

#Russia Allegedly Move Thousands of #Ukrainians to Russia Against their Will

//An official in Mariupol on Saturday, March 19, 2022 accused Russian forces of having taken thousands of Ukrainians against their will across the border into Russia who he feared could be compelled into forced labor.

Russian forces have taken “between 4,000 and 4,500 #Mariupol residents forcibly across the border to Taganrog,” Pyotr Andryuschenko, an assistant to the city’s mayor, said, referring to a city in southwestern Russia. Given chaos in the city — ongoing fighting, the lack of cellphone and internet service — his claim could not be immediately independently verified, though it was supported by testimony from others who recently fled the city.//
