One year ago, 21-year-old Lo Hiu-yan jumped from height after leaving words including "anti-extradition to China" on the wall of the staircase.

On 29 June 2020, nearly s hundred people showed up in Fanling's Ka Fok Estate to pay tribute to Lo. People brought flowers, candles, origami crane and created a make-shift altar. Lining up the candles in a shape of the heart, people sang hymns to commemorate the young girl among others who gave their lives to the protests in Hong Kong.

Shen Jilan, world's longest serving congresswoman, dies aged 90 in China

As the only delegate to the National People's Congress to have served 13 consecutive terms, Shen had proposed some proposals, including:

- Banning the TV remote in China, forcing all Chinese to watch the state broadcaster CCTV-1;

- Demanding PRC citizens to pass political censorship and receive public security bureau approval before being allowed access to the internet; and

- Censoring the term "corrupt official" to show that the CCP is a great and correct party, while classifying "corrupt officials" as "members of the public who have infiltrated the party".

Shopping Civilians Caught in Mass Arbitrary Arrest on Sunday

Netizens organised a "silent march" on June 28 to protest against the national security law. Even without chanting slogans and assembly, the public was met with the police mass arbitrary arrests in Mongkok.

One of the relatives of an arrestee, Mr. Y, was still waiting outside the police station late at night. He said that his 30-year-old cousin was arrested. They originally planned to buy sneakers in Mong Kok but was separated near Sino Center. Mr Y couldn't reach his cousin through calls, it was only after 6 o'clock that he learned from friends that his cousin has been arrested.

37-year-old male arrested for showing stickers and Fai Chun with "Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times" slogan

On Jun 26, police received a report that stickers and Fai Chun with slogen “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” were found on the metal gate outside an apartment unit in Sau Kei Wan, and were suspected to be violating the #NationalSecurityLaw. Upon investigation, a 37-year-old male was arrested for “committing acts with seditious intention”. He was granted bail but had to report to the police again in September.

At least two persons were arrested for exhibiting items with words “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times” in the past week. On Jun 21, a 40-year-old man was arrested for "publishing seditious texts" because of a flag with the slogen being hung outside a building in Mongkok. Both cases are handed over to the National Security Department.

In a Muffled Hong Kong, Bookstores Offer Freedom of Thought

When Hong Kong public libraries pulled books about dissent from circulation last month, Pong Yat Ming made an offer to his customers: They could read some of the same books, free, at his store.

Mr. Pong, 47, founded the shop, Book Punch, in 2020, after Beijing imposed a national security law in response to the antigovernment protests that rocked Hong Kong in 2019. The law broadly defined acts of subversion and secession against China, making much political speech potentially illegal, and it threatened severe punishment, including life imprisonment, for offenders.

United States stated in mid-June that it had established a global infrastructure plan called Build Back Better World (B3W), which compete with “One Belt One Road” from China. Italy, one of members from “One Belt One Road”, after joining B3W this year the Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio publicly indicated yesterday, although Italy and China have the trading and historical relationship, however this is absolutely not comparable.  
 
Italy joined the “One Belt One Road” in 2019, is the first G& countries participate the project. According to Politico, Italy joined the project during the reign of former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, the former government hoped to use this to attract Chinese investment to revitalize its economy that has stagnated for decades. According to Reuters, the United States has previously expressed concern about Italy joining the China-led “One Belt One Road” initiative.

Japan's State Minister of Defense urge protecting Taiwan “as a democratic country” as China’s threat increases

Japan's State Minister of Defense Yasuhide Nakayama, warned in an activity on 28 June of growing threat posed through the collaboration of China and Russia, and expressed the necessity to “wake up” to Beijing's pressure on the island and protecting Taiwan “as a democratic country”.

Speaking in the Hudson Institute online activity, Yasuhide Nakayama questioned whether the “one-China policy”, which Japan, US and many countries followed that recognized Beijing over Taipei since 1970, would stand the test of time. “Was it right?” he asked, “I don’t know.”

He emphasized that democratic countries had to protect each other, “So we have to protect Taiwan as a democratic country.”

British Secretary of Health Matt Hancock, who was married, was revealed to have kissed a colleague, who was also married, in his office. Matt has resigned on 26 June, 2021.

What alarmed the British government the most is the leakage of the surveillance camera footage of Matt's office.

According to the media, the camera was menufactured by the Chinese company Hikvision, which provides CCP with equipment to monitor Xinjiang. The company has been blacklisted by the United States for violating human rights in Uyghur.
 
Although British security officers claimed that there was a low chance that the incident involved countries that are hostile to the UK, British politicians called on the government to pay attention to China-made monitoring devices.

British Labour Party member Conor McGinn indicated that "the problem is not just about the scandal of Matt Hancock being exposed, but the security crisis within the British government“.

McGinn demanded the goverment to respond to how "a private company that has a connection with China can reach the depth of Whitehall”.

In a letter to the companies released on Tuesday, Jine 29, 2022, #BrendanCarr, a Republican commissioner, said he believed that “TikTok’s pattern of conduct and misrepresentations regarding the unfettered access that persons in Beijing have to sensitive U.S. user data” violated Apple’s and Google’s standards and that TikTok should be taken out of the app stores...

The Biden administration has considered other measures to keep American data away from China but has not publicly pushed TikTok to cut ties with its Chinese owner.

TikTok has maintained that it is taking steps to keep employees in China from gaining access to its data. Shortly before a recent news report revealed it was struggling to do so, it said it was routing all data from its U.S. users through servers controlled by Oracle.//

Across 19 countries, more people see the U.S. than China favorably – but more see China’s influence growing

//In 19 countries surveyed by Pew Research Center this spring, people see the United States and President #JoeBiden more favorably than China and its president, Xi Jinping. But when it comes to perceptions of each country’s relative influence in the world, much larger shares in most nations see China’s influence growing than say the same of the U.S.

The five key findings comparing international attitudes toward the two countries are:

1. The U.S. is generally seen more positively than China.

2. Views of Biden remain much more positive than views of #XiJinPing.

3. A median of 66% across 19 countries say China’s influence on the world stage is getting stronger, while just 32% say the same about the U.S. 

4. In many countries, younger people tend to feel more positively about China than older people. 

5. People on the right of the ideological spectrum are more likely than those on the left to view the U.S. favorably, but there are no strong ideological patterns in views of China.//

Missile funding?: #NorthKorea seen smuggling coal to #China

//North Korea is likely shipping coal directly to Chinese ports, activity that is banned from international trade under United Nations Security Council sanctions, a Nikkei investigation found.

Nikkei obtained satellite images of a North Korean-registered ship carrying coal, and confirmed that the ship directly went to China by examining data from the vessel's automatic identification system (AIS).

It is likely that China -- one of five permanent members of the Security Council -- is involved in smuggling activities and shows that current U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang to prevent it acquiring funds for missile development are not being fully implemented...

Nikkei obtained data on about 180 vessels -- including North Korean-flagged ships and vessels that had been cited for sanctions violations in the past -- from ship information companies MarineTraffic and Refinitiv, and traced their movements for about 18 months from January 2021.

There were 37 vessels that stayed in the port of Longkou for several days while transmitting AIS data. Similarly, at least 20 vessels called at ports in Liaoning and Hebei provinces, which handle large volumes of coal.

Regarding the movements of North Korean vessels, there have been previous reports that they would cut their AIS transmissions, making them impossible to follow, and trade at night.

Observers have often noted ship-to-ship transfers North Korea has used to circumvent conventional distribution channels, but it appears the country does not try to hide sanction-violating shipments anymore.//
