Villa Becomes TV Protagonists’ Home?
Property Owner Demands TV Show Takedown and Compensation
Watching the television is about relaxation, but for Ms Lam who lives in Hangzhou, it was a cause for mounting anger. She found out, while binging a television show, that her villa had become the home of the protagonists. Her own bed was slept on by the female protagonist and the wine cellar in her basement became the setting for the protagonists’ rendezvous.
Ms Lam had called the police for help, but public security said the incident did not constitute a criminal offence. In her anger, she sued all 8 of the related companies, including the property management company and the television production company. She said, “We have not even lived in the house yet, and they have already exposed it all for me. That is to say, it is only under such intolerable circumstances that I am using the law as a weapon.”
However, it wasn't until being in the courtroom that Ms Lam learned that other television shows had been filmed in the house previously, in addition to the show she watched. Then who let the television crews in? Ms Lam suspected the property management company, as she handed them the villa's keys she bought it in 2015, out of consideration that she would not reside in it over long periods. They did, however, sign a confidential agreement that the keys would only be used in emergency situations.
Twice there was a change of property management companies, and both companies claimed to have no part in the incident. The television crew also clarified that they had communicated with the developer before filming and thought the villa was a show house, and did not constitute an intrusion. Mainland Chinese media have reported that the developer in question was a dishonest company that previously had not been able to be contacted, and is included in a list of corporations with questionable operations.
Ms Lam said that much of the furniture and equipment in the villa has been damaged, including the broken elevator in the house and the entrance door fingerprint lock, as well as tainted carpets and damaged walls because of camera set-ups. She demanded that either the television series be taken down or the scenes showing the villa be removed, along with an apology and compensation of CNY$3 million, to cover losses in property and invasion of privacy.

The books are titled "The Guardians of Sheep Village", "The Brave 12 of Sheep Village", "The Cleaners of Sheep Village". Two of the books described the wolf invasion of the sheep village and the forced exile of the 12 brave sheeps. All the stories are set in the fictitious "Sheep Village".

On July 22, 2022 in Hong Kobg, the National Security police arrested 5 speech therapists for allegedly "publishing seditious material".
The three children's books in question are published by the General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists (#GUST). The two men and the three women arrested are members.
Speaking to In-Media, a union member said that the arrest signified that even metaphors would violate the proverbial "red line".
"The literary inquisition could be endless. Are they going to ban 1984 and Animal Farm?" The member believes that the regime now considers the union to be a thorn in their side.
"Last time they talked about adding a national security director to the labor department. This time, they went straight to making arrests. Any organization that could rally public opinion will become a target."
Another member of the union believes that the goal of the police is to persuade the public to set red lines for themselves. "Just like what their deputy commissioner (#KwokYamShu) said: don't test where the red line is." The union member goes on to say that the national security budget will only grow bigger and bigger; even if every Hongkonger "lies flat" and lives a quiet life, there will still be new risks for violating the national security law.
"Our suffering won't stop even if we give up. Just look at Xinjiang and Tibet; all [oppression] will only continue, perhaps even at a faster pace."

On July 22, 2021, the Hong Kong Police’s National Security Department arrested 5 committee members of the General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists (#GUST) on "seditious publications", accusing them of "violating the Criminal Offences Ordinance".
Li Kwai-wah, a senior superintendent in the Police’s National Security Department, said in a news briefing that the book and others published by the Union are "instilling hatred among children".
He claimed that the book titled “The Guardians of Sheep Village” is taking the background of Anti-extradition Law Amendment Bill (Anti-ELAB) Movement in Hong Kong.
Li said the story of the wolves invading the village and devouring the sheeps is referring to the conflicts between mainland Chinese (the wolves) and HongKonger (the sheeps). He explained the Force's interpretation based on the book's depiction of wolves entering the village in sheep’s clothing as an allegory of local people’s livelihood being messed up.
Li also condemned that the book for depicting the sheeps retaliating the wolves’ attack with their horns.
According to Li. it is provoking violence and criminal behavior, “sheep, although mild and timid, is portrayed as ferocious and capable of inflicting violence.”
Some reporters pointed out that another book “The Cleaner of Sheep Village”, which describes the COVID-19 pandemic, is not from the same series.
Li, however, insisted that all the Union’s storybooks are connected and "part of a series”.

//A group who applied to hang Chinese national flags on lampposts over multiple highways in Hong Kong last year will see fees totalling HK$147,000 refunded by the Highways Department, following instructions from #ChiefExecutive John Lee.
Lee said he learnt that a community group was asked to pay administrative fees and inspection fees by the government after applying to hang national flags over some highways in the New Territories for National Day last year.
The leader wrote on his Facebook page on Thursday night that he had asked the relevant department to educate the public on how to properly hang the national and Hong Kong flags. Lee said he also required the government body to prevent similar incidents from happening again.
“The government values the promotion of patriotic education and has been actively pushing community groups and the public to celebrate special dates such as the National Day, with respect to the flags and symbols of the nation and Hong Kong,” Lee added.
Less than two hours after Lee’s post, the Highways Department published a statement saying that it had approved the waiver and will inform the group of refund arrangements “as soon as possible.”
Pro-Beijing backlashes
The issue was first raised by pro-Beijing columnist Chris Wat in an opinion piece published on Tuesday in Headline Daily.
Wat said a group was asked to pay HK$147,670 by the Highways Department for hanging some 1,200 national flags on lampposts around Kam Tin Road and Fan Kam Road between September 20 to October 9 last year.
“When the people self-initiated to do what the government didn’t, why are you still punishing these patriots who gave their heart and sweat?” Wat wrote in her article.
A day after, lawmakers Michael Lee and Rock Chen wrote to the department to ask what legal grounds the fees were based on.
“During the riots in 2019, many political parties and groups were hanging flags and leaflets on streets as well – how were you dealing with those items?” Lee and Chen wrote.
After John Lee announced that he had asked the department to waive the fees in question, Michael Lee thanked the leader for his “immediate concern” on Facebook on Thursday night as well.//

When Hong Kong fencer #CheungKaLong won a #GoldMedal at the #TokyoOlympics in July 2021, many Hongkongers were overjoyed. Among them, a 27-year-old man published a video of the medal ceremony on the Internet, replacing the audio of China's national anthem with "Glory to Hong Kong," an anthem of the 2019 #AntiELAB movement.
One year later, the man was now charged with "insulting the national anthem of China" and "insulting the emblem of the Hong Kong SAR."
The case was heard in the Eastern Magistrates on July 22, 2022. The man was not represented by any counsel. The magistrate accepted the man's request to postpone the hearing to September 2, 2022, so that the man can look for a lawyer.

There was prima facie evidence against them. The prosecutor gave a closing statement on #July18 that this case does not need to prove the defendants have seditious incitement or that someone is incited. As long as the defendants understand the publications are with incitement but still publishing, they can be charged. The prosecutors cite previous cases to emphasise incitement can lead to severe consequences such as rebellions and internal wars. It can be similar to the Crime of #Treason.
The defendants stated in the closing statement on #July20 that the related kid's books are not seditious but reflect the defendants' views on social issues, which should not be criminal. The definitions of "#hatred", "#contempt", and “#subvert" are vague and broad, which allow the authority to punish dissidents, causing a chilling effect. People are frightened to be arrested with no bail due to providing non-official perspectives, just like these defendants being under detention for a year.
The defendants then listed a number of former-UK colonies, including India, Kenya and Uganda, to show "the Crime of Incitement" is unconstitutional and has been abandoned.
The case was extended until July 30, 2022 to continue the closing statements.
