The CCP is believed to have released these data by mistake and let the world know the truth. There may be two sets of data for the Wuhan pneumonia epidemic. One is for publication; and the other, the truth.

HKU estimates 232,000 infected in Wuhan in mid-February, 2.8 times the reported total for China

There are more than a million cases of Wuhan coronavirus in Europe and the United States and yet the epidemic has not even peaked. In stark contrast, mainland China, the country where the outbreak started, has only about 82,000 cases, leading the public to question the true scale of the outbreak. The Hong Kong University School of Public Health's WHO Collaborating Centre for Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases has found that had mainland China broadened its case definition criteria earlier; and screened all those with respiratory symptoms, who have been to Wuhan and surrounds, or who have been in contact with suspected cases; it is estimated that by 20 February, the number of patients with Wuhan pneumonia would have reached 232,000, about 2.8 times the current reported total cases in the mainland.

//The study further pointed out that the mainland officially announced 1 January as the date of disease onset for 114 patients. However had the mainland adopted the fifth edition of the criteria at that point in time, 11,000 patients would have been identified with onset on 1 January, an increase of 96 times.//

Hong Kong Research Institute Demands Police to Return Data: Police are “Scarier than thieves”

During the mass arrest of 55 pro-democracy activists for their involvement in the primary election, the Hong Kong police also took away computers and servers from the office of Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#PORI) located in Wan Chai and Wong Chuk Hang.

The PORI provided technical support during the primary election in July 2019. The president of PORI, Dr. Robert Chung Yiu Ting, said their lawyer issued a letter to the Secretary for Justice, demanding the police to respect academic freedom and researchers’ dignity and return data that is unrelated to the case.

Chung said, the data that was taken away by the police has nothing to do with the primary election. One of the items taken away was a large scale database which stored a large amount of data set that would be crucial for long term data analysis.

Chung anticipated that “the police would probably say they do not know which data is related and which is not related to the election”, and therefore asked the police to return a copy of the data so that they can maintain their research at the Institute; otherwise it would be hard for one to not think that the police are being “malicious”.

Chung also said he was aware of the citizens’ concerns towards the safety of the data storage. Although the PORI has already enhanced its security system to prevent any hacking, they still cannot prevent the data from being collected by someone with public authority.

“You can prevent thieves by closing all windows, but you still cannot stop the police from entering your house”. Dr. Kenneth Chan Ka Lok, in political science at the Baptist University, described the police as “scarier than thieves”.

UK should be concerned at Chinese gene data harvesting, lawmaker says

Britain should be concerned about the harvesting of genetic data from millions of women by a Chinese company through prenatal tests, a senior British lawmaker told Reuters.

A Reuters review of scientific papers and company statements found that BGI Group developed the tests in collaboration with the Chinese military and is using them to collect genetic data around the world for research on the traits of populations.

"I'm always concerned when data leaves the United Kingdom, that it should be treated with the respect and privacy that we would expect here at home, and the concern that this raises is that it may not be so," Tom Tugendhat, chairman of the British parliament's Foreign Affairs Select Committee, told Reuters.

#Google handed user data to Hong Kong authorities despite pledge after security law was enacted

//Google has provided user data to the Hong Kong government in response to three requests made between July and December last year, making it the first US tech giant to disclose its compliance with requests from the local authorities for user data after the national security law was enacted last June.

In total, the 42 legal requests it received during the six-month reporting period involved 46 user accounts, whilst the one emergency disclosure request involved a single account.

The tech giant said it still requires the vast majority of Hong Kong government requests to be processed through diplomatic procedures, including any national security law related requests…//

#China Targeted #US Federal Reserve system to Build Informant Network and Access #Data, Probe Finds

//China tried to build a network of informants inside the Federal Reserve system, at one point threatening to imprison a Fed economist during a trip to Shanghai unless he agreed to provide nonpublic economic data, a congressional investigation found.

The investigation by Republican staff members of the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs found that Fed employees were offered contracts with Chinese talent-recruitment programs, which often include cash payments, and asked to provide information on the U.S. economy, interest-rate changes and policies, according to a report of the findings released Tuesday [July 26, 2022].//

Twitter whistleblower reveals employees concerned China agent could collect user data

The FBI informed Twitter Inc (TWTR.N) of at least one Chinese agent working at the company, U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley said during a Senate hearing on Tuesday where a whistleblower testified, raising new concerns about foreign meddling at the influential social media platform.

Peiter "Mudge" Zatko, a famed hacker who served as Twitter's head of security until his firing in January, said some Twitter employees were concerned the Chinese government would be able to collect data on the company's users.
