Remembrance Day in Hong Kong and Commonwealth Member States

November 11 marks the Remembrance Day observed by commonwealth states in memory of the end of the First World War on November 11, 1918.

Since the end of the Second World War, the British Hong Kong government named the second Sunday of every November as the Remembrance Day.

Ceremony has since then been observed at the Cenotaph in Central to commemorate the soldiers and the casualties during the First and the Second World Wars.

#HKU President Proposes to Appoint Deans Directly; Students' Union: "Co-Governance Must Not Be Violated"

It has been reported that the Council of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) will alter the appointment process of the deans. Originally, university deans sre selected by democratically elected staff members and students. With the reported new proposal, the new deans would be appointed by the University President directly.

The Faculty Societies of HKU Students' Union (#HKUSU) released a joint statement in response to the Council's proposed amendment on the Dean Recruitment Guidelines. The Students' Union calls this decision "reckless", and urged that it be utterly rejected.

The statement also emphasizes that the principle of co-governance must not be violated: A university co-governed by both students and the staff can prevent the management from getting out of touch with the staff and students. Should the university proceed to confer disproportionate authority on the president, the student union will put up resistance and ensure that a fair and just system could be maintained.

Citizens Lay Down White Flowers on 2-Year Anniversary of Student Protester's Death

Today (November 8) marked the second year since the passing of pro-democracy Hong Kong student #ChowTszLok. Citizens around the city brought brocades of white flowers to the site of his fatal fall in remembrance.

During the anti-ELAB movement in 2019, Chow, a 22-year-old university student, fell from the 3rd floor of a car park in Tseung Kwan O as police clashed with civilians in nearby streets.

He died from his injuries in hospital 4 days later, on November 8, 2019.

A Coroner’s inquest was conducted in January 2021 to determine cause of Chow’s death. However, as the jury was unable to decide the causes and circumstances of his death, the coroner pronounced an open verdict.

Grandma Wong Arrested while Paying Tribute to Chow Tsz-lok

Grandma Wong was in Tseung Kwan O around 7:30pm, holding a handbill with the number 2 in her hands, signifying the two years since the death of Chow Tsz-lok.

She chanted familiar protest slogan “Five Demands No One Less”, and called for establishing an independent inquiry commission to investigate the cause of Chow's death.

Moments later, Grandma Wong was quickly surrounded by police officers, who then took her away in a police car.

Hongkongers Pledge to Carry On Deceased Student's Unfinished Quest for Freedom and Democracy

After China's imposition of National Security Law and crackdowns on dissenting voices in what was once one of the world freest cities, Hong Kong has not seen large scale gatherings in remembrance of those who suffered police brutality and sacrificed their lives during the quest of freedom and democracy.

On this night (Novermber 8), defiant Hongkongers continued to pay tribute to #ChowTszLok, a university student who passed away after falling from height in a car park during anti-ELAB movement in 2019.

In a park not far away from the car park, several light boxes with Chow's portrait and a line of white candles had been set up in Chow's remembrance.

A second set of light boxes displayed the citizens' vow to continue their quest for democracy, pledging to Chow that they will "carry on your unfinished journey (代你走下去)."

CCP State Media Justifies Propaganda on #JournalistsDay as Crackdown on Citizen Journalists Continue

Journalists in China are either part of state-owned propaganda or being imprisoned for criticising the government.

November 8 marks the Journalists’ Day in China. Most state-funded media published articles praising the work done by media workers.

In the party funded People’s Daily, several journalists were interviewed to talk about their work on the ground. Among them, one described their work as a "tribute to the [Chinese Communist] Party's centennial anniversary."

Hu Xijin, the editor-in-chief of the state-funded tabloid Global Times, tweeted that "journalists are part of state-owned propaganda."

Never mentioned on these official media were those independent journalists and citizen journalists who have been imprisoned, detained, or arrested for pursueing truths under the Chinese Communist Party’s (#CCP) rule.

Zhang Zhan, a Chinese citizen journalist and former lawyer, was sentenced in December 2020 to four years in jail for her reporting on CCP’s mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has been confirmed that Huang Xueqin, a women's rights activist, and independent journalist, was being arrested.

Pro-democracy Café in Hong Kong Unveils Mural to Encourage Citizens’ Fight for Freedom

Located in Mong Kok, Hong Kong, Hop Fat Café is a popular local restaurant in support of pro-democracy values.

During the 2019 Anti-ELAB Movement, the café owner displayed a 10-feet wall painting featuring protest symbols such as the LiHKG pig, pepe, and a masked protester couple holding each other amidst the heavy smog of tear gas.

18 months later, the café was closed in August 2021 for renovation. When it re-opens in early November 2021, the newly refurbished café featured a mural depicting a group of people climbing a hill while helping each other.

The mural made reference to one of the oft-used protest slogans, 兄弟爬山 各自努力, literally meaning brothers climbing mountains together by their own efforts.

Protest icons like gas masks, yellow hamlets, yellow hearts and black umbrellas continued to be seen on the wall.

A famous line from Les Miserable was qouted and prominently highlighted: "Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise." Seemingly, Hongkongers are encouraging one another to hang on and resist during difficult times.
