Celebrity mocked the ignorance of the Pro-China Chairman of Hong Kong's Junior Police Officers Association

Movie celebrity Chapman To posted on his Facebook page a comment concerning the Pro-Democracy New Year Rally in response to the statement made by Lam Chi-wai, Chairman of the Junior Police Officers Association.

Lam, outspoken for his pro-China stance and known for calling protesters "cockroaches" in open statements, claimed that there were no more “peaceful, rational protesters” in Hong Kong but only "rioters".

Chapman To responded in his post that if over 1.03 million people participated in the New Year March were to be "violent rioters" as Lam described, all 30,000 in the police force would not have survived the day.

A riot police officer in Tai Hang called the scene a crime scene, saying he did not know whether or not the onlookers had weapons.

"Do not frighten us or we will use force". He told the bystanders to leave if they were feeling scared. "You shouldn’t feel scared when police officers are around, otherwise you should leave Hong Kong."

He also said, "Don’t mess up Hong Kong. During a riot, do not surprise a police. Even an 18-year-old might carry a gun nowadays.”

Police Humiliated and Taunted Civilians during ID Check in Downtown Hong Kong

2345 | Causeway Bay, Percival Street and Lockhart Road

Apple Daily Reporter interviewed three civilians who were released after being intercepted by police near the SOGO Department Store in Causeway Bay.

Ms. N said she was asked to provide her residential address and police threatened to charge her with illegal assembly if she could not produce any proof of her address. She felt the police just wanted to find an excuse to arrest people for illegal assembly.

Another citizen, Ah Wai, revealed that during the interception, a civilian informed the police that he was unwell, but the police laughed at him and questioned why he only started feeling unwell after the protest. This civilian with ill-health was not released until 3 hours later.

W, a student, mentioned that police fired tear gas canisters without warning at the SOGO area and pointed guns at bystanders. While checking his Identity Card, police humiliated and cursed at him, accusing him of “not studying hard” and saying his “whole family will go to hell”. W said that he was cooperative during the interrogation and did not resist. He felt like the police behaved like triads.

Hong Kong Police Force criticized for not looking professional

Hong Kong police were found wearing “Operations Number” badges on their uniform with some displayed horizontally while others vertically. They appeared not to care about looking professional as one would expect from members of disciplinary forces. Some police officers even wore personal accessories on their uniforms.

Press Under Police Attack on the First Day of 2020

Even before the New Year's March could take place on the first day of 2020, Hong Kong police had fired tear gas and made arrests as the new year began.

In Mongkok, police stormed in back alleys to subdue pedestrians by pressing them on the ground. A USP Reporter was also shoved and attacked by the police with baton. The said reporter was hit in the head. If the reporter was not wearing a helmet, he would have been severely injured.

The USP reporter was, however, not only member of the press subject to police brutality.
