Germany Former BND President Warned that China Almost Dominates the World, and Urged Europe to Reduce Reliance on China

The former President of the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND) in Germany, Gerhard Schindler, spoke to the British press The Times that China was almost ā€˜dominating the worldā€™, and that all European countries should be alert to this issue, lowering the ā€˜tactic relianceā€™ to China, especially for Germany.

Schindler, who served as the President of BND between 2011 and 2016, raised that China becomes more proactive in recent years, including aggressive actions in the South China Sea, the monopoly in the economy of African countries, and the Belt and Road Initiative infrastructure projects in Eurasia. He said, 'China is very clever and silent in conducting these dominating actions activities that we can hardly spot in Europe.'

China is the largest trade partner of Germany which the bilateral import and export trade volume reached EUR 206 billion (HKD 1.9 trillion) last year. Schindler pointed out that Germany must reflect on the situation of 'Business relationships dominate the stance on China'. He believed that there was a need to revise the Germany-China relationship. ā€˜We have some industries relying on China, such as our vehicle manufacturing industry, but we should not rely more heavily on others to reduce this reliance. We should try to reduce dependence.ā€™ Schindler said.

The Times: British Judges in Hong Kong should resign together in demand for judicial independence

On March 15, 2021, The Times published an editorial titled ā€œBritish Judges should resign from Hong Kongā€™s Court of Final Appealā€.

The editorial states that Beijing is suppressing Hong Kongā€™s freedom and is demanding that ā€œpatriots rule Hong Kongā€. The UK has explicitly said that China has violated the Sino-British Joint Declaration.

According to the editorial, the reason why China has not removed the British judges in Hong Kong is only because Beijing wanted to maintain the status quo. They believe that the current judicial system provides a welcome gloss of legitimacy, so that Hong Kong can continue to serve as an international financial centre.

ā€œWith the illusion that they can deliver change from within the new system exploded, they should instead adopt a common position and resign together. They should insist, with one voice, that they will no longer lend their authority to a compromised system, and demand that independent justice be restored to Hong Kong.ā€

In a report published on the same day, The Times mentioned that Lord Neubergerā€™s agreement to remain a judge in Hong Kong for 3 more years brought controversy over ā€œthe role of the ten British judges on Hong Kong's court of final appealā€. The report quoted senior figures saying that the UK can protest against Beijingā€™s changes to Hong Kongā€™s electoral system by withdrawing the British judges serving in Hong Kong.

According to the published report, Lord Neuberger previously said that the time would come when it would be right for all foreign judges to quit the Hong Kong bench. In 2017, he spoke at the University of Hong Kong, saying that foreign judges are the ā€œcanaries in the mineā€, harbinger of a crisis.

ā€œSo long as they are happy to serve on the court, then you can safely assume that all is well with the judicial independence and impartiality in Hong Kong.ā€ He said, ā€œbut if they start to leave in droves, that would represent a serious alarm call.ā€

The Times: Hongkongers are Passionate to Help Afghanistan Immigrants;
MP in the UK: Hongkongers Understand How a Subverted Life is

According to The Times, new Hong Kong immigrants to the UK shared the happiness and warmth of ā€œfirst arrived in the UKā€ with Afghans who fled the Taliban regime. David Alton, a Member of the UK House of Lords, reposted the report on Twitter and stated that Hongkongers were taken everything, which they deeply understood Afghan's life changes and often took the lead in reaching out to those in need.

Recently, the Hillsong Church organises a volunteer plan to help Afghans, who escape to the UK, starting a new life. To get away from Taliban rule as soon as possible, many Afghans only brought some clothes with them when they left. According to the report, the plan gained support from Hongkongers who recently moved to the UK. Ginu Chacko, one of the church members, said he saw a Hong Kong couple brought some games and played with Afghan children.
