Canada-wide Rally Urges Ottawa to Protect Hong Kongers' Freedoms and Sanction Officials

Rallies organized by Canada-Hong Kong Link and Ontario Universities Hong Kong Awareness Group were held in nine cities across Canada on Aug. 16 to call on Ottawa to take “immediate action” against the controversial implementation of the national security law in Hong Kong, by offering a "Safe Harbor Program' for Hong Kongers at risk, invoking the Magnitsky Act to sanction responsible Chinese and HK officials, and introducing legislations to stop foreign interferences in Canadian politics.

Atrocities committed by the CCP were also openly addressed by speakers at the rallies to inform the masses about the party's numerous violations against basic human rights.

Ottawa New Democrats: Liberal government must act quickly to protect Canadians and support Hong Kongers

NDP Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Jenny Kwan, made urgent calls for special immigration measures for the people of Hong Kong to Minister Mendicino. She urged the minister to implement special measures including immediate actions to expedite and expand family sponsorships, extend student and working visas, and offer more pathways to citizenship.

NDP Foreign Affairs Critic, Jack Harris stated that the Liberals had the responsibility to take a leadership role in bringing like-minded nations together to stand up to China regarding the things that are going on in Hong Kong, and on Human Rights.

How Ottawa can fight for the rights of Hong Kong-Canadians

The federal government should make it known to Beijing that the mobility rights of Hong Kong Canadians are sacrosanct and inalienable. Canadian citizenship is not decided by other nations, and Canadian passport holders in Hong Kong do not forgo consular protection or the right to leave China.

Other concrete steps Ottawa can take to help those immediately affected. Quickly opening a path to citizenship for family members of dual passport holders would make it easier for Canada to welcome residents who wish to flee Hong Kong.

Also, the federal should expedite asylum claims made by Hong Kong people involved in the pro-democracy movement since anyone prepared to take a vocal stand on freedom is already aligned with Canadian values.

Additionally, Canada should work together with Britain and other democratic allies, including the U.S., France, Australia and New Zealand, to push back against China’s deplorable erosion of Hong Kong’s fundamental democratic rights. Concerted international action will be crucial to forcing a change in attitude within Chinese leadership.

CSIS first alerted Ottawa to national-security concerns of two scientists at top disease laboratory

Canada’s spy agency urged the removal of security clearances for two scientists who were later dismissed from the country’s top infectious-disease laboratory because of national-security concerns relating to their work with China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, according to two sources.

In January of this year, Xiangguo Qiu, who headed the Vaccine Development and Antiviral Therapies Section, and her biologist husband, Keding Cheng, were fired from their positions with the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) in Winnipeg.

Closure of Hong Kong’s last pro-democracy newspaper should spur Ottawa to action, critics say

On its final day of publication, the last pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong sold every copy in the region within hours Thursday after being forced into closing by Beijing-backed authorities, who arrested a handful of the newspaper’s executives and editors last week while freezing some of its assets.
Hong Kong residents lined up at newsstands to grab a final copy of the one-million circulation Apple Daily, the Associated Press reported. Many say it was the last uninhibited critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its Hong Kong affiliates.

'Frosty' economic times with China likely to continue despite release of two Michaels

Relations between Ottawa and Beijing are not likely to warm up anytime soon despite the release of the two Michaels, reinforcing the need for Canada to pursue a revamped Asian economic strategy, some China-watchers said Monday.

On Saturday, Canadian businessman Michael Spavor and diplomat Michael Kovrig arrived back in the country after Chinese authorities had detained them for more than 1,000 days. Their detention followed and was widely seen as a response to a U.S. extradition request for Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. executive Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Vancouver in December 2018.

Most Canadians want Ottawa to set up foreign-influence registry

A strong majority of Canadians favour a registry of foreign agents, similar to ones in Australia and the United States, to shed light on Canadian citizens paid to influence Canada’s political process on behalf of countries such as China or Russia.

A public-opinion survey by Nanos Research found that 88 per cent of Canadians support or somewhat support a foreign-influence registry. Only 7 per cent of those surveyed oppose or somewhat oppose having lawyers, lobbyists and retired politicians register when they take on paid roles for foreign governments and companies linked to these countries.
