Hong Kong Photographer Won Accolade in Prestigious Photography Prize

Tam Ming Keung, a photographer of United Social Press, won the silver prize in the General News category of the 2020 Franch Photography Prize PX3.

The award-wining photo captured a chaotic scene at Shatin's Newtown Plaza on July 14, 2019 when the riot police violently dispersed pro-democracy civilians.

The photographer shared his thoughts on receiving the accolade:

“It is still hard to believe that police actually clash with civilians in the shopping malls. The violent incidents that took place in shopping arcades were mostly associated with terrorist attack or gun shots.

However, in Hong Kong it is almost certain that on several days of a month, heavy police presence would be found in some shopping malls, turning these premises into military grounds, as if martial laws were imposed.

On each floor, plain-clothes police could be seen discreetly standing and scouting, while riot police troop up and down, setting up cordon with orange duct tapes and intercepting shoppers at their will.”

HK's Correctional Services Force Inmates to Undergo 'Voluntary' COVID Tests and Penalized Those Refused

Pro-democracy legislator and social worker Shiu Ka-chun revealed that the Correctional Services in Hong Kong had ordered all inmates to participate in the government's 'voluntary' universal CoVID19 testing scheme. The scheme has sparked many controversies including the government's commission of unlicensed Chinese companies to run laboratory tests and security concern over personal data collection.

According to Shiu, a jailed female pro-democracy protester, who refused to join the 'voluntary' testing scheme, was being 'punished': She was locked up in an isolation cell, with no access to TV, book and radio.

Animal Abusers Let Free by HK's Department of Justice; Pro-Democracy Lawmakers Voice Discontent

On Februrary 14, 2020, a series of animal abuse incidents occurred at Hong Kong Garden, Tsing Lung Tau, where 29 pet animals including cats, rabbits, birds and hamsters were dropped from height on 3 subsequent days, with 15 of which died as a result. The police tried to track down the apartments resided but were unable to find any suspects.

Eventually, 2 male residents, accompanied by lawyers, surrendered themselves to the authorities. However, the Department of Justice (DoJ) decided to drop all charges due to a “lack of evidence.”

On September 9, voluntary organization “1020 Dog Parents” and Pro-Democracy Lawmaker Claudia Mo held a press conference demanding the DOJ to reconsider bringing the charges. “The moral progress of a nation and its greatness should be judged by the way it treats its animals,” said Claudia Mo, quoting from Gandhi. She condemned the DOJ’s lukewarm attitude towards the incident and the absence of explanation. She said their protest may be of no avail. ”But if we don’t do anything, we’ll get nothing,” she added.

Police arrested 15 suspected of stock rigging; SFC hints no involvement in the case

On September 10, HK Police Force arrested 15 people for suspected defraud and money laundering, citing their involvement to shore up the stock price of Next Digital (0282), the parent company of Apple Daily and attract innocent members of the public to invest. However, there were doubts that the investigation should more appropriately be carried out by the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).

SFC made an unusual response a day later (September 11), pointing out that the Force are investigating a suspected case of defraud and money laundering, involving potentially fraudulent transactions in Apple Daily’s shares. The Commission elaborated that since investigation of fraudulent transactions often require expert evaluation, they are therefore standing ready to respond to any requests for assistance from the Police.
In the statement, the Commission hinted that they were not informed and engaged in the case.

At Police’s press conference, the chief superintendent of the Narcotics Bureau, evaded media questions concerning SFC’s role in the case, and there was no mention of " fraudulent stock trading transactions."。

Hong Kong Alliance Chairpersons Charged with "Inciting Subversion of State"

On September 10, 2021, the Department of Justice (#DoJ) in Hong Kong laid charges of "Inciting subversion of state power" against the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, as well as its chairperson #LeeCheukYan, and co-chairs #AlbertHo and #ChowHangTung.

The Alliance was informed of the charges via the Hong Kong police, whose National Security department had yesterday carried off a large number of items from the Alliance's June 4 museum as evidence.

The case was brought to court on September 10, 2021. The court denied Chow's application for bail, while Lee and Ho have been detained for long under other charges relating to the pro-democracy movement.

[Editor's note: The same charge of "inciting subversion" were used by China against activists of the 1989 Tiananmen protests, which the Alliance commemorated in a candlelight vigil every year. It had not been applicable to Hong Kong until the introduction of the #NationalSecurityLaw in 2020.]

Hong Kong Authorities to Delist Pro-democracy NGO from Registry

According to sources on September 10, 2021, the Secretary for Security #ChrisTang, who is the former police commissioner, is removing the pro-democracy group, The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, from its company registration.

The Hong Kong authorities have launched a crackdown on the 31-year-old pro-democracy group, which is the key organizer of the annual candle vigil at Hong Kong's Victoria Park, commemorating the victims of the 1989 June 4 Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing.

Also on September 10, 2021, the Department of Justice (#DoJ) has charged the chairpersons of the group, including #LeeCheukYan, #AlbertHo and #ChowHangTung, of "state subversion" under the #NationalSecurityLaw.

One day ago, the police raided the already-closed June 4 Museum, previously run by the group.

Hong Kong Government Questions the Oath of Seven Pro-democracy District Councillors

On September 10, 2021, the Hong Kong SAR government demanded directly elected district councillors on Hong Kong Island to take oath, pledging allegiance. They are the first batch of district councillors scheduled for oath-taking.

The authorities accused seven pro-democracy district councillors who swore oaths of allegiance of being "questionable".

The seven councillors are Clarisse Yeung and Leung Pak-kin from the Wan Chai district council; Wei Siu-lik, So Yat-hang, Chan Wing-tai and Lai Tsz-yan from Eastern district; and Southern district's Michael Pang.

Peter Choi, a pro-democracy district councillor who didn’t show up, has been immediately 'disqualified' and removed from his seat by the authorities.
