#DirtyMoney: #iCable owner Chiu Tat-cheong earns profit in UK property project at the expense of press freedom in Hong Kong

On December 1, 2020, paid TV station i-Cable chairman Chiu Tat-cheong announced the layoff or re-deployment of a total of 100 staffs, while remaining silent on the selective layoff of all team members of "News Lancet", the only investigative program in Hong Kong.

The sackings were described by the Hong Kong Journalists Association as media suppression.

As the chairman of Far East Consortium at the same time, Chiu has widened his property search to the UK. Chiu admitted earlier that the National Security Law in Hong Kong helps to push the number of Hong Kong buyers up for its property projects in the UK. He showed support for the draconian law and claimed that their UK properties will be snapped up if all three million Hong Kong BNO holders are to settle in the UK.

21,300 (about 83%) out of the 56,600 residential units launched by Hong Kong or Chinese property developers in the UK since 2019 are owned by Far East Consortium, including New Cross Central, Aspen at Consort Place, and other 4 projects. One of the projects Northern Gateway plans for a long-term construction in the future 15-20 years on the 155-hectare land in cooperation with the Manchester City Council.

Another shareholder of i-Cable Li Sze-lim owns 3,900 residential units under his real estate developer R&F Properties, including One Nine Elms, Vauxhall Square, and other 2 investment projects. Li also owns more than half of the units launched by the Chinese developers, such as Vanke and Country Garden.

A total of 25,200 units are launched by Far East Consortium and R&F Properties, which is a hundreds of millions-worth business. Most of the projects started several years before, and come to finish in 2020, which coincides with the mass immigration wave of Hongkongers following the imposition of the National Security Law in Hong Kong.

With the businessmen's tougher suppression of press freedom in Hong Kong, it is not hard to imagine that a mass exodus will result in hot demand for UK properties.

Hong Kong #DemocraticParty's Vice Chairman Leaves the City for UK

On August 7, 2021, Wen Wei Po, a newspaper controlled by China's Liaison Office in Hong Kong, claimed that the Vice Chairman of the Democratic Party in Hong Kong #LEEWingTat were seen in the airport boarding a Cathay Pacific flight to London on August 6. The pro-China newspaper said Lee "will not return shortly".

LEE's wife #CHANShuYing confirmed the news but didn't give more details. CHAN said Lee would speak for himself, when necessary, "I won't speak on his behalf, even though I am his family". Chan is currently in Hong Kong..

LEE, aged 65, is a former legislative and district councilor in Hong Kong. He was also a co-founder of the United Democrats of Hong Kong, an initial body of Democratic Party, in 1991, together with SZETO Wah and HO Chun-yan Albert,

Lee was a legislative councilor until 2012, when he lost in the election repesenting the New Territories West. The defeat marked his step-down from his previous prominent position.

In April 2019, LEE was convicted for one count of "Incitement to Public Nuisance" during the Occupy Central Movement in 2014. He was sentenced to a 8-month imprisonment, with a 2-year suspension.

In June 2021, LEE "returned" yo the political scene by taking up the Vice Chairman role of the Democracy Party. He said he wanted to stablize the Party and its members.

Lee opposed the Democratic Party to organize candidates to participate in the coming Legco election in December 2021. In the political sphere, it was rumoured that Lee's return aims at barring the few young members of the Party from candidating themselves in the election.

Hong Kong Immigrants in Britain are showing a flair for protest

//Between January and September last year [2021] 88,000 Hong Kongers applied to move to Britain under the British National (Overseas) visa route, which was created by the government in response to the crackdown on democracy in Hong Kong. Many of them have been quick to stage in their adopted home the traditions of their old one.

The protest in Edinburgh was one of at least ten held across Britain in January alone. Some demonstrations in London have attracted almost 1,000 people. For a modest-sized group of new immigrants, the speed and scale with which the Hong Kongers have taken to the streets is striking.

Hong Kongers say that the main reason they keep protesting is because objectionable things keep happening. January’s protests have been focused on the issue of press freedom: in December and January two of Hong Kong’s last remaining independent news outlets closed after their offices were raided by police and journalists were arrested. Further protests will probably be held in February to call for a boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which start on February 4th...

Hong Kongers who have fled the Chinese Communist Party’s crackdown on the city were specifically driven to leave by sudden restrictions on their rights of free speech and free assembly. The point of moving was to regain those freedoms for themselves and their children. Although many Hong Kongers in Britain still fear the Communist Party, failing to protest in Britain would be cowardly, argues Ken: “If I am silent here I am just helping them.”//

#Report: Hong Kong Population Growth Mainly from Chinese Immigration; Scholar Concerned for Erosion of Local Values and Culture

It has been 25 years since the return of Hong Kong to the Chinese sovereignty in 1997. The city's population has since grown by around 1 million. According to government statistics, 1.12 million Chinese have moved to Hong Kong via one-way visa from 1997 to the end of 2021.

The RFA's investigation report found a noticeable shift in the city's population structure.

While low birth rate among local Hongkongers and growing trend of emigration created a dent in population, the gap is quickly being replenished by "new Hong Kong citizens" - an phrase coined by Chinese state media People's Daily, describing immigrants from the mainland. By the report's conservative estimate, about one in 7 to 10 citizens in Hong Kong is a "new Hong Kong citizen."

The report further elaborated that as a result of such shift in population structure, the local community has become "Sinicized", becoming more like China with fewer Cantonese speakers, but more who speak Putonghua and English.

The number of China-owned media outlets are also growing in Hong Kong.

For the first time, a new immigrant from China has sworn in as a legislator this year. He took his vow in Mandarin.

Yip Kwok-ho, honorary professor of CUHK's School of Social Sciences, said that this phenomenon is "natural and inevitable." However, he is concerned that the local value system and culture is being diminished and eroded.
