Chinese spies in Malta’s embassy? News to me, says EU’s Borrell

//On Friday, a report in the French daily Le Monde said that Belgian intelligence sources believe Malta’s embassy in Brussels could have been bugged by Chinese spies. The Maltese government said that isn't true.

//According to the French newspaper, "since the early 2010s" Belgian state security suspected that Chinese secret services used the embassy — located directly opposite from the European Commission's Berlaymont headquarters — to spy on the European institutions.

//The spying "could, according to Belgian intelligence, still last today," said the report.

//According to Le Monde, the alarm was sounded by British intelligence who said they believed Chinese secret services were involved in renovation work on the building ahead of its opening in 2007.

//Borrell's relaxed reaction — suggesting the EU would wait to hear from Belgium rather than undertake its own urgent inquiry — could prove risky given recent criticism of the EU's diplomatic arm for being too soft on China and overly accommodating of Beijing's wishes.

//However, it remains unclear whether the EU will open an independent investigation. The European External Action Service didn't reply to a question about what, if any, action has been taken. And diplomats stressed that is crucial to understand who was in charge of the critical ICT infrastructure in the embassy, a task that is usually carried out by national agencies or by certified contractors.

//The article "makes various incorrect allegations that such equipment is being used for illicit purposes," Valletta said, adding that "the Permanent Representation has been the subject of internal and external audits and found the building to be in the clear" and that "80% of the mentioned furniture has over the past 2 years been disposed of and replaced by new furniture procured from Malta."

Editor’s Note: There are rumours circulated on the Internet that China might be involved in the riots in the US but have yet to be verified. If this snapshot is real, CCP should be in trouble.

User 1: Who shouted in Chinese last night? Didn't we agree to stay low, hide at the back and run away after finishing?
User 2: Because of the loud shouting, the video is circulating in the U.S. now.
User 3: Military Officer Zhang was also there. Still everyone there were disorganized and lack principle.

Digital fraud in the South Korean general election? Possibility of Chinese manipulation in the vote-counting machines

(1 Jun) South Korea's general election in April was a landslide victory for President Moon Jae-in's ruling Democratic Party. But since then, there have been allegations of election fraud.

According to East Asia Research, the election fraud is related to digital fraud. It is suspected that the vote-counting machines, computer hardware and software, as well as information network telecom equipment manufactured by China's Huawei Technologies, had been tampered with. There are also suspicions on the QR codes used for mail-in votes and early ballots.

East Asia Research said that the instructions needed to operate the vote-counting machines “can come from the QR codes on the early-vote ballots as they are counted, or it can also be sent from an external source to the vote-counting server via the Internet”.

The National Election Commission chose LG U+ 5G, which uses Huawei equipment, as the wireless network for pre-vote ballots. East Asia Research said that “servers used at the election sites could be connected to servers in China, and the user on the Chinese end could access the vote-counting machines”.

As the National Security Law suppresses Hong Kong, how will ‘laam chau’ brother’s “grassroot international lobbying” continue?

(9 Jul) Laam chau team’s work has gradually evolved from sending emails to international lobbying, organizing global rallies, and even inviting foreign legislators to witness the protests in Hong Kong. Laam chau brother described the team’s inception in last June as a “grassroot effort”, but it has now developed into a “grassroot international line” without the participation of political stars. Recently, they joined the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) – an alliance comprised of legislators from 13 countries, who are pushing for stronger responses from governments worldwide to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

After one year of protests, street protests have been heavily suppressed; After the implementation of the National Security Law, “local organizations, political figures, legislators and students in Hong Kong involved with international lobbying will inevitably be suppressed”. He understands that from now on, the international persuasion work would have to depend on overseas Hongkongers.

“Is this how my life would end?”

In a video released in early May, Laam chau brother, who is currently abroad, mentioned that someone offered a million dollars to have him killed. After the release of the video, netizens worry for him and asked him to be careful, and some even suggested hiring bodyguards.

However something still happened to him in recent months.

Laam chau brother said he was walking alone on the street one night when he noticed a figure approaching him. He walked hurriedly, but before he got to the corner of the street, he was surrounded by a few black men. One grabbed him from behind and the others started beating him. They aimed for the head, he recalled.

He soon collapsed and became unconscious. The smell of his blood was so thick that all he could think was, “Is this how my life would end?”. When he regained consciousness after an unknown period of time, he could barely get up, but the first thing he did was to photograph his injuries and tell his team. “At least they’d know what happened if I die”, he said.

He recalled that it took the nurse several hours to stop the bleeding from the wound on the back of his head. Apart from his skull, his eyes were also bleeding and swollen, and his white shirt was stained with blood. Till this day, the back of his head is still swollen.

Is the attack directly related to politics? “Frankly speaking, I can’t rule it out, but I also can’t prove that the attack is related to the CCP.” Laam chau brother said, “This may be the last warning, or it may be that I’m born unlucky”.

Laam chau brother also mentioned that a team member lost touch after participating in a Hong Kong protest. He said that member was active in the group, and he would never “suddenly disappear“. There is also a rule in the team that requires members to report their safety regularly and give notice before quitting. “If he is still safe, I hope he could inbox us and let the team know.” However, he is not too optimistic on the situation.
