Pro-democracy Hongkongers Turn Handmade Giant Lantern into Lennon Wall

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for family reunion, but 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers detained in China were barred by the Chinese authorities from meeting their family.

Tsuen Wan district councillor Adrian Lau and volunteers have made a 1.5 m tall giant rabbit lantern and have it displayed at Exit A of Tsuen Wan subway station to the direction of D•Park between 5 and 8 pm on 30 September, 2020.

The lantern became a make-shift Lennon Wall for citizens to put up memos. Many showed support for fellow citizens who share the same value and the 12 pro-democracy Hongkongers currently detained in China.

Lau hopes the lantern "not only brings joy to people during the Mid-Autumn Festival, but also let civilians feel that freedom still exits in Hong Kong.”

Lau said Hongkongers had been keeping social distanc since early this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Personal relationship has been alienated and people cannot even gather during festivals. He hoped that people could relax for a while and write a supportive memo for people sharing the same value through this activity, while respecting safety. Lau said he would read pass the message on the memos to relevant people or organizations later on.

A neighbourhood volunteer, Gigi, said the lantern they made was 8 times larger than a traditional rabbit lantern. They found suitable materials such as wire and plastic tube in hardware shop in the community. Since the previous Saturday, they had been building the giant rabbit lantern by hand step by step.

Lau emphasised that they would abide by the anti-pandemic ordinance 599G by respecting the group gathering ban and limiting any gathering to not more than 4 people. He ensured that the event was legal.

Lau added the police haven’t intervened even when many people queued for free newspapers and he believed that the police would have no reason to suppress the activity.

#PolyU Management to Organize Flag-raising Ceremony on PRC's National Day; Students Call For Boycott

The Vice-chancellor of Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) Teng Jin-guang sent an email to all departments’ heads, trustees’ board members and the Students' Union on September 30, 2020, informing them of a “simple but solemn flag-raising ceremony” to be held for the “71st anniversary of the founding of the People Republic of China (PRC)” on the next day, October 1, 2020. He invited teachers and students to observe the ceremony in formal costumes in order to "celebrate the achievement of our country".

Such an event has never been organized in the university before. According to sources, it is organized in a rush and was not plan for this year.

The External Vice President of PolyU Students' Union Cheung Ki-Ho revealed that a flag-raising ceremony had a political meaning due to the siege of PolyU during the pro-democracy movement in 2019. “The PolyU [management] wants to show their stance and pledges allegiance to China via this ceremony.”

Cheung questioned why the university authorities only sent invitation to the members of the Students' Union. After checking with the Students' Unions of other universities, no other university in Hong Kong had this arrangement.

The Students' Union has replied to the university that they would not attend. They called on students to don black and take part in a silent protest instead.

Refugee Centre Fundraiser Achieves 200% of Goal for Fire Repairs; Elated Social Worker: "Unexpected Support from Hongkongers!"

One unit of the Christian Action Refugee Service Centre in Chungking Mansions wasdestroyed by an air conditioner fire at the end of August 2020.

The space has served refugees for 14 years since it has been put to use. The organization launched a crowdfunding to rebuild the units with a goal of HKD 800,000, and successfully raised more than 1.6 million, over twice the expected amount.

Social worker Jeffrey Andrews, who has been working at the center for 11 years, was excited at the exceptional result of the fundraiser, and still feels it was hard to believe: "It's too much!" Having spent years serving the refugee community, he knows that this minority group has been neglected by society.

Unexpectedly, this time they received a lot of support, and moreover, most of the donors are local Hongkongers. He is pleased to see that the crisis has turned into an opportunity, and the funds raised are enough to carry out a major renovation for the three units of the centre and improve the quality of services.

Looking back on the past year, Andrews noticed that Hong Kong people’s attitude towards minorities and refugees has changed dramatically. It all started in October 2019. He and his friends distributed water bottles to the protesters outside Chungking Mansions, which became an opportunity for the two groups to get to know each other and sincerely connect. "I think it's beautiful, and it's better than money!"

The social event has also made Hongkongers understand that their own fates and that of the refugees are not all that different, after all.

US to Bar Members of "Communist Party or any other totalitarian party" From Immigration

On Oct 2, 2020, the US Citizen and Immigration Serives (#USCIS) in their Policy Manual announced an "inadmissibility based on membership in or affiliation with the Communist Party or any other totalitarian party". The new policy is likely to prevent Chinese Communist Party members from obtaining citizenship in the U.S.

Meanwhile, according to the Press Release of the US Department of State on Sept 20, 2020, the United States anticipates receiving more than 300,000 new refugees and asylum claims in Fiscal Year 2021. It is the first time Hong Kong is listed in the proposed refugee resettlement program.

The press release writes the aim of the program is to "assist refugees and other displaced people as close to their homes as possible until they can safely and voluntarily return to rebuild their lives, their communities, and their countries."

Lingnan University Terminates Adjunct Appointment of 2 Outspoken Professors

In response to inquiries by Stand News, the Hong Kong Lingnan University (#HKLU) indicated the adjunct appointment of Law Wing-Sang and Hui Po-Keung have ended in September 2021, and their names have been removed from the school website's list of faculty members. They were professors of Cultural Studies.

The university did not mention the reason for not renewing their contracts.

Law and Hui are scholars active in pro-democracy protest movements, commenting often on current affairs. At the beginning of the 2014 Umbrella Movement, after the police fired tear gas on the gathering crowds, the two publicly condemned the government's actions and went on strike as teachers.

Hui is also a trustee of the “612 Humanitarian Relief Fund”, a fund supporting those injured or arrested during the Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill Movement.

After the implement of National Security Law, Law continued to comment on newspapers. He published an opinion piece in MingPao on September 3, 2021, saying that the implementation of the National Security Law had 'perfected' Hong Kong's democratic 'election' system overnight. It also put an end to the ongoing controversy over the pace of democratization since the city's “return to China”: “Hong Kong strides into the era of “authoritarian rule”.
