HK Governmentd Makes #LiberalStudies a Scapegoat for Social Discontent

Hong Kong's Education Bureau (#HKEB) announced on Nov 26, 2020 their plans to reform Liberal Studies, including changing the grading to a pass/fail system, and requiring student to join a study tour to China.

Former lawmaker of the education sector Ip Kin-yuen criticized the proposed curriculum reform for covering up government failures in handling the social discontent about the extradition bill and shifting blame onto Liberal Studies for making students "radical".

He added that the proposed change is apparently putting political consideration above educational professionalism, with a goal to weaken students' critical thinking by inserting politically correct elements.

Ip pointed out that the government also ignores the review report published by the Task Force on Review of School Curriculum in September 2020.

The Secretary for Education Kevin Yeung Yun-hung said that the unit "Hong Kong Today" in Liberal Studies is not for news discussion; whereas Ip stressed that Liberal Studies teaches news-relevant topics including personal development, society and globalization.

"There is no reason to ban the discussions of current affairs," Ip said. He described the government's plan as an act of setting up new limitations for education, and slammed the exclusion of news discussions.

History exam may be leaked by non-HKEAA committee members, Teacher's Union VP warns

Stand News has recently received a letter by an anonymous informer who claimed to be a staff of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (#HKEAA). The letter stated that among the 7 non-HKEAA members of the Moderation Committee for the History subject this year, at least 2 are Education Bureau employees, one being a senior curriculum development officer and the other a project officer. This is different from the past, when only one Education Bureau staff would be appointed to the Committee.

#IpKinYuen, vice president of HKPTU voiced his concern about the narrow spectrum of the committee. He also pointed out the possibility of questions being leaked ahead of the exam, as Education Bureau staff might be required to “report to their superiors" in government.

Former Democratic District Councillors Opt to Stay after Resignation and Open Stalls for Wine-Selling, “Want to Slow Down the Collapse of Civil Society”

In July 2021, the HKSAR Government claimed to disqualify democratic district councillors and would ask for a salary return from district councillors after disqualification, leading to the resignation of over half of these councillors. However, resignation does not mean leaving the area permanently. Instead, some of the resigned councillors continue their contribution to society in another way. For example, LAM Siu-Bun's office in Yau Tsim Mong becomes a miscellaneous stall; LEUNG Kwok-Ho's office in Cheung Chau becomes a wine shop; former Kwai Tsing District Councillor WONG Pit-Man returns to the community organisation Tsing Yi Islanders as a convener to organise different events.

The above three did not leave but having different perspectives. LEUNG admitted a struggle between being an “ordinary person” to take care of his family and staying for the community. However, many fellow co-fighters are in prison now, and he said, “I need to be here! With my ability. I don’t want to leave!”. LAM, was the assistant of IP Kin-yuen, strengthened his persistence to stay after the collapse of the HK Professional Teacher’s Union, “I don’t want to see a sudden collapse of civil society!”. WONG thought that she loaded down her identity as a district councillor, “returning” to her past, being a convener of an organisation concerning the community, doing what she should do.

Yet, what they all have in common, is, "Stay in the community even if they are no longer a district councillor".
