Exclusive: Newly obtained documents show Huawei role in shipping prohibited U.S. gear to Iran
//China’s Huawei Technologies, which for years has denied violating American trade sanctions on Iran, produced internal company records in 2010 that show it was directly involved in sending prohibited U.S. computer equipment to Iran’s largest mobile-phone operator.
//Two Huawei packing lists, dated December 2010, included computer equipment made by Hewlett-Packard Co and destined for the Iranian carrier, internal Huawei documents reviewed by Reuters show.
//The packing lists and other internal documents provide the strongest documentary evidence to date of Huawei’s involvement in alleged trade sanctions violations.
//The United States is trying to persuade allies to avoid using Huawei equipment in their next-generation mobile telecommunications systems, known as 5G. Separately, U.S. authorities are battling Huawei on a legal front.
//A U.S. indictment alleges that Huawei and Meng participated in a fraudulent scheme to obtain prohibited U.S. goods and technology for Huawei’s Iran-based business, and move money out of Iran by deceiving Western banks.

Half of the Canada Want More Aggressive Actions on China
53% Canadians believe Ottawa should take a more aggresive move, such as blocking Chinese investments or denying entry to Chinese officials and their families, to persuade Beijing to release the two detained Canadians from jail.
Despite some urged to free Meng, when asked about the option to release Meng for the two Michaels, 40% of respondents opposed and another 16% "somewhat opposed" the idea.
PM Justin Trudeau rejected the prisoner exchange with China, while two-third of the respondents said the case should be decided by the Canadian courts, rather than politicians.
Even with the Canadian historic default position on focusing on diplomacy, Trudeau clarified that such exchange will only embolden China and other countries to detain other Canadians to bend Ottawa to their will.

Senator warns China might not free Spavor and Kovrig in Meng deal if Canada not part of effort
An expert in Canada-Asian relations is warning a future U.S. deal to set free Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou may not lead to the immediate release of two Canadians locked up in China – particularly if Ottawa is not seen as having played a significant role in her release.
Senator Yuen Pau Woo, as facilitator of the Independent Senators Group in the Red Chamber, is the leader of the largest bloc in the Senate. Prior to his appointment to the Senate, he served as president and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada in Vancouver.

Huawei defense to ask Canada court for delay in CFO's extradition hearings
The defense team for Huawei's chief financial officer, Meng Wanzhou, will ask a Canadian court to delay upcoming hearings in her U.S. extradition case, the court said on Friday.
Meng's U.S. extradition hearings have lasted more than two years and she is scheduled to be back in the British Columbia Supreme Court on April 26.
A source familiar with the matter told Reuters the application was a result of an agreement announced last week in a Hong Kong court between Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HWT.UL) and HSBC (HSBA.L) regarding publication of internal documents relating to the fraud allegations against Meng

B.C. judge takes aim at heart of case against Meng Wanzhou
A B.C. judge raised questions on Thursday about the allegation at the heart of the U.S. case against a Chinese business executive facing extradition from Canada.
The United States alleges Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd., committed fraud by lying in a PowerPoint presentation in 2013 to her Hong Kong bankers about the company’s relationship with Skycom Tech Co. Ltd. The purpose, the U.S. says, was to evade its sanctions against Iran.
But Ms. Meng’s legal team says the U.S. Justice Department is attempting to mislead Canada. It obtained evidence that Ms. Meng told HSBC during the PowerPoint presentation that Skycom was “controllable,” and that Huawei could therefore ensure it would comply with U.S. sanctions.

'Frosty' economic times with China likely to continue despite release of two Michaels
Relations between Ottawa and Beijing are not likely to warm up anytime soon despite the release of the two Michaels, reinforcing the need for Canada to pursue a revamped Asian economic strategy, some China-watchers said Monday.
On Saturday, Canadian businessman Michael Spavor and diplomat Michael Kovrig arrived back in the country after Chinese authorities had detained them for more than 1,000 days. Their detention followed and was widely seen as a response to a U.S. extradition request for Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. executive Meng Wanzhou, who was arrested in Vancouver in December 2018.

“Eyes Wide Open” on Relations with China, Says Canadian Foreign Minister
The Canadian foreign minister Marc Garneau said in a CBC interview on 26 September that the Canadian government has no illusions about normalizing relations with China. Vowing to keep their “eyes wide open”, Garneau said the government will approach relations with China with coexistence, competition, cooperation and challenges.
After Huawei’s deputy chair of the board Meng Wanzhou was allowed leave Canada, China immediately released the Canadians Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor. Garneau said it was very emotional to see the two returning to Canada, noting that they are in good condition and that the government is not ruling out the possibility of providing compensation to them.
In response to China’s denial that Kovrig’s and Spavor’s detention were related to Meng’s case, Garneau said the timing of the two Canadians’ release shows that the cases are connected “in a very direct manner”.
