Closure of Hong Kong’s last pro-democracy newspaper should spur Ottawa to action, critics say
On its final day of publication, the last pro-democracy newspaper in Hong Kong sold every copy in the region within hours Thursday after being forced into closing by Beijing-backed authorities, who arrested a handful of the newspaper’s executives and editors last week while freezing some of its assets.
Hong Kong residents lined up at newsstands to grab a final copy of the one-million circulation Apple Daily, the Associated Press reported. Many say it was the last uninhibited critic of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and its Hong Kong affiliates.

Closure looms for Hong Kong's pro-democracy Apple Daily after raids
The pro-democracy Hong Kong newspaper Apple Daily looked set to close for good by Saturday following police raids and the arrest of executives - a move that critics say undermines the city's status as a free and open society as Beijing tightens its grip.
Mark Simon, an adviser to the jailed owner and staunch Beijing critic Jimmy Lai, told Reuters on Monday the newspaper would be forced to shut "in a matter of days" after authorities froze access to the firm's core operating capital, needed for staff wages and other expenses, on national security grounds.

Pro-democracy Independent Bookshop closes down due to Political Oppression
Located in San Po Kong, Hong Kong has an independent bookshop, Bleak House Books, which has closed down on October 15.
Many supporters and customers went there to bid farewell and take photographs. Some put down words of encouragement on wish cards for the owner, Albert, who decided to return to the US.
Although most of the bookshelves have been left empty, many customers lingered on in the shop till the very last moment.
Finally, Albert switched off the light and walked out of the shop. He closed the door and put up a placard on the door that writes “Hong Kong is my home”.
When talking about the current situation in Hong Kong, Albert felt “being suffocated” every day.
He said, “the politics in the US is a mess too. But they are barely possible to arrest all democrats. At least there are some spaces left … I am not sure how risky it has become, but I felt being muffled and could hardly breathe every day.”
