Citizens Continue Monthly Tribute in Remembrance of Police Brutality Victims Despite Mounting Oppression

Today is the last day of 2020, which also marks the 16th month of the 8.31 incident where Hong Kong police forced themselves onto a train landed at Prince Edward MTR station and attacked indiscriminately passengers on the train, pepper-sprayed innocent civilians, and stopped medics from aiding those being injured.

Many pro-democracy protesters, on their way home after a day of peaceful rally, had fallen victim to police brutality on August 31 last year. Known as the 8.31 Prince Edward Incident, this is also remembered as one of the most brutal incidents during the Anti-ELAB movement in Hong Kong last year.

Since then, members of the public have voluntarily been going to #PrinceEdward station on the last day of every month, bringing white flowers to pay tribute to the rumoured casualties and the victims of #PoliceBrutality during the pro-democracy movement.

In a bid to silence opposing voices in the city, Hong Kong Police announced that they will arrest citizens going Prince Edward station to lay white flowers in remembrance of this incident, citing COVID-19 and social distancing as excuses.

Although police set up a long cordon line this afternoon as early as 4pm, Granny Wong was sighted near Prince Edward station with white flowers in late evening, holding a light sign that read “#Save12”.

In defiance of stringent police control, some citizens came to show their respect to pro-democracy protesters, bringing a prominent signage that read, “ICAC investigate proactively, arresting the plaintiff Lam Cheuk-ting instead”.

Reuters: Two Nuns in Vatican’s HK-based Quasi-diplomatic Mission Arrested in Mainland China, Top Clergyman in the City Censors Protest from within the Church

A long investigative report published by Reuters on December 31 quotes a source as saying that that two nuns in an informal, Hong Kong-based diplomatic mission from the Vatican had been arrested on a visit to their hometowns in mainland China. The report says they were later placed under house arrest and prohibited from leaving the country. Some senior members of the Holy See consider the incident a sign that China wishes to have the mission closed, and top clergymen in Hong Kong believe Beijing is expanding its control over the diocese and even attempting to influence the selection of the next bishop.

The report also quotes four unnamed informed sources as saying that the current leader of the diocese and the apostolic administrator, Cardinal John Tong Hon, has been suppressing progressive voices in the church, including that coming from the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission. Last October, the diocese, headed by Cardinal Tang, censored a statement from the commission on Sino-Vatican relations, removing a part concerning the missing Bishop James Su Zhimin of mainland China’s underground church.

Hong Kong's top court puts media tycoon Jimmy Lai back in custody

Hong Kong’s top court ordered media tycoon Jimmy Lai, the most high-profile person to be charged under the city’s national security law, back into custody on Thursday, saying a judge may have erred in a decision to release him on bail.

The judges said in their ruling, referring to Article 42 of the security law. The article stipulates that “no bail shall be granted to a criminal suspect or defendant unless the judge has sufficient grounds for believing that the criminal suspect or defendant will not continue to commit acts endangering national security”.
Lai, who is accused of colluding with foreign forces, was released on HK$10 million ($1.3 million) bail along with extensive restrictions that included barring him from using social media.

Apple removes 39,000 game apps from China store to meet deadline

Apple removed more than 46,000 apps, including 39,000 gams in total from its China store on Thursday, the biggest removal ever in a single day, as it set year-end as deadline for all game publishers to obtain a licence.

The takedowns come amid a crackdown on unlicensed games by Chinese authorities.

“However, this major pivot to only accepting paid games that have a game licence, coupled with China’s extremely low number of foreign game licences approved this year, will probably lead more game developers to switch to an ad-supported model for their Chinese versions,” said Todd Kuhns, marketing manager for AppInChina, a firm that helps overseas companies distribute their apps.

After Covid, Plane Makers Are Even More Dependent on China

After Covid, Plane Makers Are Even More Dependent on China

Airlines in the West expect to take years to recover from Covid-19 and aircraft manufacturers depend on the resilience and growth potential of the Chinese market. But China’s own aerospace ambitions and the geopolitical tensions that surround them could make it a turbulent ride.

With another 500 million Chinese expected to join the middle classes over the next few years, the country is also the industry’s big growth opportunity. China is especially important for the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 families

The alternative, which Western companies fear, is that the narrow-body gap will be filled by the C919, made by Chinese State-owned manufacturer Comac. C919 is delayed and unlikely to enter service before late 2021, with limited initial production capacity. It is key for Beijing’s “Made in China 2025” industrial plan. This shouldn’t be underestimated, especially in the later half of the decade. The Chinese government can sell the plane at very discounted prices, and it owns a big chunk of the customers.
