Recruitment difficulties allegedly made police management to go easy on trainees caught cheating on finals

Early May this year in HK Police Academy in Wong Chuk Hang, a group of 7 police trainees were found engaging in an organized effort to cheat on their graduation examination. They were caught on the scene when copying answers from a crib sheet prepared in advance as the examiner walked away to another examination hall.

As a standing arrangement, trainees caught cheating on an examination will be immediately dismissed. However, Police management officers were suspected of taking a lenient approach to these trainees due to recruitment difficulties they encountered in past few months. Instead of discharging these trainees, they arranged for the whole class of 24 trainees to re-take the examination.

It was said that the involved trainees will be allowed to graduate after being verbally reprimanded. Other affected trainees were dissatisfied, and they questioned the integrity of the trainees involved in the incident and are doubtful of their ability to enforce the law responsibly.

No priority queue for the elderly in LegCo election

Pro-establishment lawmakers had requested to set up a priority queue for the elderly and the disabled in the upcoming LegCo election. Secretary for Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Erick Tsang Kwok-wai supported their cause. However, the Electoral Affairs Committee announced today (Jun 18) that the practice of the DC election will be kept, and voters in need can sit down to wait.

Also, to increase the transparency of the election, the Committee will allow voters to witness staff crossing out their names after registration. A notice will also be posted to notify voters about the the maximum number of voters allowed in the venue.

The Committee stated that the verification process and ballot distribution will not be conducted electronically, because the system cannot be set up before this year’s LegCo election.

Pan-democratic lawmaker Wu Chi-wai agreed with this decision, suggesting that it was reasonable. DAB criticised the Committee for being “useless” and failing the keep the election fair.

Hong Kong Government Official considers citizens opposing the national security law as unsuitable to "serve the SAR"

As Beijing continued to push for the promulgation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong, several potential democratic candidates of Legislative Council election signed a “protest position statement” on June 18 which sets revoking the Budget Proposal as a means to pursuit the Five Demands in pro-democracy protests as their ultimate objective.

Secretary for the Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau, Tsang Kwok-wai said in an interview that should a candidate of LegCo election negates or rejects the National Security Law, his intent to defend the Basic Law and loyalty to the SAR government will be questioned. He considered revoking Budget Proposal an action to tarnish LegCo operation and government administration, and hence the candidates’ allegiance to the SAR government should be doubted.

Principal of an elite school resigned amidst white terror and growing political oppression

Ying-wah College is a reputable elite school in Hong Kong with more than 200 years of history. It was caught in a political storm when several students were found paying tribute to a protester killed in the movement, Marco Leung on June 15 on school campus.

The school issued a memo immediately, disapproving the students’ behaviors, reiterating the school’s stance in upholding an apolitical position. It also rebutted chanting “Hong Kong Independence” slogan and initiating relevant discussions on school campus. In the memo, it pointed out that teachers attempted to dissuade their students, but not successful and that they are following-up with those students in accordance with procedures established for disciplinary support.

Despite that the ex-Chief Executive of HKSAR and Vice-Chairman of CPPCC National Committee, Leung Chun-ying and a pro-China website ruthlessly reprimanded the school.

School principal, Cheng Kwan-kit disclosed to school alumni that he has tendered resignation to the school board in May and is leaving Hong Kong for good in August.

#WhiteTerror Spreads to #Sport Sector: Pro-China Legislator Condemns Hong Kong Athletes

According to Hong Kong's Chief Executive #CarrieLam, the SAR Government had purchased the broadcasting rights for the #Tokyo #OlympicGames, and arranged for five TV stations to broadcast.

In the panel meeting on Home Affairs at the Legislative Council (#LegCo), athletes representative of Hong Kong were, however, attacked by the pro-Beijing DAB party.

For instance, Leung Che-cheung, a #DAB member, criticized the Hong Kong Ladies’ Foil Team members, for reportedly hand signing the pro-democracy “Five Demand, Not One Less” slogan during the 2019 World Cup.

The pro-China legislator comdemns it as an action "against the Government".

Leung continued to ask the Government to follow up with this matter.

Concuring with Leung, the Government's Commissioner for Sports Yeung Tak-keung claimed that “politics should be separated from sports”.

Yeung said that athletes must sign a guideline before participating in competitions, and should not express political demands on the Olympic occasions. Yeung emphasized that there is any violation, the game would be suspended and the personnel would be penalized.

Douglas Todd: Sam Cooper’s exposé of corruption in Canada tops bestseller list

It’s not every day a reporter who has worked for The Vancouver Sun and The Province writes a book that hits No. 1 in sales on Amazon.ca and continues to hover near the top.

But that is what dogged journalist Sam Cooper has achieved with his thrilling and deeply disturbing exposé of what he rightly calls the “mind-blowing” connections among organized crime, casinos, the Chinese Communist Party, real estate, money laundering, offshore billionaires and Canadian politicians.

Dr John Tse Wing-ling, the new-elected Executive Director of the Hong Kong Unison Limited, starts his duty today (16th June). He invites media to have a tea gathering and shares his thoughts on topics about the minorities, pointing out that they are also facing various difficulties under the pandemic even though they only take account for 3% of the Hong Kong population.

The Unison Limited contacted 900 families in late March. 60% of them have lost their jobs or underemployment, in which, 4% of the families have been living under the poverty line for a long term. Half of their children have fallen behind the learning syllabus due to the lack of online learning equipment. Many students feel that they cannot catch up with their studies on Chinese after re-starting face-to-face learning.

Dr. Tse mentions in the gathering that education issues is on the top list at the Unison Limited. He believes that only having the knowledge can change the minorities’ future. He said that even though the government have put resource to this group of people, most of them are outdated. As a result, he hopes the Steering Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs in the new government will listen to their voices, will improve their education especially on Chinese Language as a second language.

Tse indicates that the Unison Limited received enquiries from the ethnic minorities about their struggles on applying for a new round of consumption voucher. As a result, he plans to set up 4 to 5 service stations at late June at Tung Chung, Yau Tsim Mong, Sha Tin, Yuen Long, where have more minorities living, to help them signing up for the voucher with other friend organisations.
