Court Dismisses Charges on Man who Bought Balloons for His Kids on Protest Day
On 1 January 2020, "New Year's Day Protest" organized by Hong Kong's,democracy front had devolved into a conflict between the police and the protestors. A 39-year-old electrician was accused of possessing zip-ties and balloons outside the MTR Causeway Bay station that day, and was charged with one count of possession of offensive weapons or tools suitable for illegal use.
When the case was heard again in the Eastern Magistrates' Court on April 29, 2020, the prosecutors applied to dismiss the charge on the grounds of insufficient evidence, and the electrician was acquitted in court. The defendant applied to avoid the hearing costs and reiterated that the items involved in the case were reasonable, and that he indicated his job as an electrician to the police, and the balloons involved were gifts for his children.
