Hong Kong has been a wrestling arena for China and Britain for more than a century. It is, more accurately, a battleground between the #authoritarian and the #democratic world.

In 2019, the HK government insisted on passing a controversial extradition amendment bill, causing thousands of young people assembled to thwart it, and leading to marches which at the peak gathered 2 million citizens. Over these 10 months, riot police has fired over 10 thousand canisters of tear gas, conducted forced entries into university campuses, and used disproportionate armed force to disperse protesters.

An unidentifiable number of missing #Hongkongers , many of whom were still in their teens, tragically ended up as corpses on the sea, while the police considered the deaths unsuspicious.

Both the HK government and the Chinese central government have never ceased eroding Hongkongers' liberty. The HK government is planning to implement the notorious "Article 23 (of the Basic Law)" which empowers the same to enact laws to arrest anyone on the grounds of treason, secession, sedition, or subversion against the Chinese government.

By witnessing what has happened to numerous human rights activists in Mainland China, no one in Hong Kong should feel safe. What can we do to protect Hong Kong people from the autocracy?

Canada isn't alone in its fight with China anymore

When China began playing hardball with us following the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei, Canada was at a clear disadvantage.

Indeed, China outclasses Canada in almost every measure —economically and politically. China’s restrictions on the import of numerous Canadian products showed how powerless Canada was.

But the tables have turned.

China has become an international pariah, due to its handling of the coronavirus crisis. China initially tried to hide the novel coronavirus from the rest of the world. It silenced the doctor who tried to warn others about the virus as far back as November. It exerts far too much influence over the World Health Organization, which spent months praising China’s response, while ignoring Taiwan’s warnings. It outright lied about the fact that there was person-to-person transmission of the virus and continued to allow international flights out of the country, which allowed the disease to turn into a pandemic that costs hundreds of thousands of lives.

United States president Trump has called Chinese President Xi Jinping a “friend” and initially praised the country’s response to Covid-19. Since more than 6.2 million cases of Covid-19 have been reported worldwide, Trump’s administration is now engaged in a high-stakes war of words with the Chinese.

While the rest of the world has been struggling to deal with Covid-19, China has expressed its ambitious movement toward Taiwan. China sends warships, aircraft carrier and fighter jets into the Taiwan Strait. U.S. deploys a destroyer and conducting large-scale surveillance operations off China’s coast.

Meanwhile, China is also involved in a diplomatic spat with #Australia and Canada. Canberra has led the charge for an international inquiry into Beijing’s handling of the pandemic, and successfully helped push the World Health Assembly to pass a motion to that effect earlier this week.

It is clear that China’s authoritarian rulers have burned a lot of bridges leading straight to democratic countries that have historically been allies of ours. The Canadian government should now abandon its passive tone and join the international community’s effort to contain China.

We should ban #Huawei from contributing to our 5G infrastructure. We should improve our trading relationships with our democratic allies, forge new free trade agreements and press for Taiwan to be included in the Trans-Pacific Partnership. This will leave us less dependent on the Chinese. Instead of pursuing a Security Council seat, we should be using our clout to try to get Taiwan included in international bodies and pushing for a thorough investigation of China’s actions over the course of this pandemic.

With our #democratic allies lined up alongside us, this is Ottawa’s opportunity to actually make some headway in its long-simmering dispute with Beijing. All the Liberals have to do is seize it.
