No core social indicator in Hong Kong scores a passing rate in 2020
The Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute (#PORI) randomly interviewed 1,000 citizens via the phone to gauge their opinion on the five core social indicators in Hong Kong.
The survey shows consistently
declining score across all five values – Democracy, Freedom, Rule of Law, Prosperity and Stability.
On a scale between 0 to 10, none of the indicator has achieved a score higher than 5, with “Democracy” and “Rule of Law” rated at the bottom of the list at 3.56 and 3.8 respectively. “Prosperity” was rated at 4.09, the lowest rating ever recorded since June 1997.
Rule of Law : 3.8
Democracy : 3.56
Freedom : 4.45
Posperity: 4.09
Stability: 4.04
The Convener of The Professional of Commons on Policy issues, Lai Kwong-tak pointed out that a consistent decline across all 5 social indicators is linked to the erosion of human rights in the city
The finding reveals that the government has “taken no notice to human rights, and neglected people’s livelihood.” The administration has degraded from “poor” to “tyrannical”.
Lai cited the outbreak of Coronavirus in Yau Ma Tei as an example, where the root causes are connected to long standing issues like town planning, housing policy and poverty policy.
Lai also condemned that amidst hiking unemployment rate and a stagnant market, the city's Finance Secretary hinted on a tax increase while the Secretary for Labor and Welfare suggested raising transportation concessions for elderly from HK$2 to HK$3. These policies are simply disconnected with societal needs.

Three Canadian companies investing in Xinjiang operations, Trudeau concerned about companies violating human rights
In an effort to stop China from committing human rights abuses against the Uighurs in Xinjiang, the Canadian government announced last week that it is asking major domestic companies to avoid doing business with or profiting from forced labour. Recently, Canadian media reported that three publicly traded Canadian companies had invested hundreds of millions of Canadian dollars in Xinjiang, making them the top five foreign investors in the region. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed concern about the incident and said he is in close contact with all Canadian companies to ensure they do not benefit from human rights abuses.
The Globe and Mail (Canada) reported Monday that three Canadian companies, including renewable energy giant Canadian Solar Inc. and two small mining companies, Dynasty Gold Corp. and GobiMin Inc. have operated businesses and invested hundreds of millions of dollars in Xinjiang over the past two decades. However, none of the three companies has responded to whether they are involved in human rights abuses or forced labour activities.

Taiwan's representative office in the U.S. invited to presidential inauguration; Taiwan media: first time since 1979 when Taiwan-US diplomatic relations broke off
U.S. President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn in at Capitol Hill in the early hours of Thursday morning HKT. The Taiwan Representative Office in the United States had not received an invitation to the inauguration ceremony until today (20th January), announcing that Representative Hsiao Bi-Khim was invited and will attend the inauguration. According to Taiwanese media, this is the first time Taiwan has been formally invited to attend the inauguration ceremony since the cessation of diplomatic relations between Taiwan and the U.S. in 1979, a significant breakthrough for Taiwan.
The Central News Agency (CNA) reported that Taiwan's representative office in the U.S. issued a press release today stating that Hsiao has accepted the invitation from the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies (JCCIC), the organiser of the 59th U.S. Presidential Inauguration. She will represent the Taiwan government at the inauguration ceremony of President Biden and Vice President Harris on the West Lawn of the U.S. Congress and congratulate them on behalf of the Taiwan government.

The World Deserves Answers From China
The terrible ravages of the coronavirus pandemic are evident in every corner of the world, so it should seem self-evident that every effort must be made to find out where and when the virus made its fateful leap from animal to human. That is why a team from the World Health Organization last week arrived in Wuhan, China, where the coronavirus was first identified. Just getting into China has taken the W.H.O.’s international team of scientists more than a year.
Without cooperation and transparency in China, W.H.O. can learn a little. The sprawling Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in Wuhan, which peddled game meat and live animals and to which many of the first infections were traced, has been closed and disinfected. The samples and information gathered there are locked away at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and no researchers will dare speak with the international team without explicit permission from the government.
Whether that first germ came from a bat or a pangolin or a civet or a neighboring country is likely to remain a mystery, and the search for ways to stop such transmission will remain handicapped.

30 months after 7.21 Yuen Long Mob Attack, Hongkongers refuse to forget
On July 21, 2019, over 100 rod-wielding men stormed Yuen Long rail station, leaving 45 people injured, including pro-democracy journalists, legislators, protesters returning home after a rally and regular commuters.
Several other violent beatings took place in the area, as white-clad men were seen chasing after black-clad civilians with wooden rods and bamboo sticks with the China flag attached.
Hong Kong police were accused of colluding with the attackers and criticised for arriving late to the scene, a whole 39 minutes after they received reports. Over 20,000 calls to the police emergency hotline went unanswered despite the event unfolding on live news. Meanwhile, uniformed officers were spotted walking away from the MTR station as the attack was developing, and later seen chatting with some of the white-clad men with hands on each other's shoulders.
In August 2020, the police aggressively pushed a vastly distorted narrative that runs entirely counter to what video evidence depicts of the assault. In a briefing, police officer said the attack was not "indiscriminate" but were clashes between two "evenly matched" rival groups.
Dubbed the "7.21 Yuen Long attack", the incident is one of the most remembered happenings during the Anti-Extradition Bill movement. It remains a shocking and indelible evidence of the police turning its back on Hong Kong people.

Security scanners across Europe tied to China govt, military
//At some of the world’s most sensitive spots, authorities have installed security screening devices made by a single Chinese company with deep ties to China’s military and the highest levels of the ruling Communist Party.
The World Economic Forum in Davos. Europe’s largest ports. Airports from Amsterdam to Athens. NATO’s borders with Russia. All depend on equipment manufactured by Nuctech, which has quickly become the world’s leading company, by revenue, for cargo and vehicle scanners.
Nuctech’s critics allege the Chinese government has effectively subsidized the company so it can undercut competitors and give Beijing potential sway over critical infrastructure in the West as China seeks to establish itself as a global technology superpower.
“The data being processed by these devices is very sensitive. It’s personal data, military data, cargo data. It might be trade secrets at stake. You want to make sure it’s in right hands,” said Bart Groothuis, director of cybersecurity at the Dutch Ministry of Defense before becoming a member of the European Parliament. “You’re dependent on a foreign actor which is a geopolitical adversary and strategic rival.”//

The 7th University in Hong Kong ceases recognition of its Students’ Union
In an internal email sent to students and faculty members on January 20, 2022, the Education University of Hong Kong (#EdUHK) criticized governance of the student union, saying that the Union has been operating under a ‘provisional’ body for the past four consecutive years, without proper mandate and therefore lack of student representation.
The university said it will stop offering support to the union, including the collection of membership fees, providing network accounts and services, and offering IT support. Additionally, the student union will lose access to its office space and the right to book and use campus facilities and venues.
The union’s HK$9 million reserve will also be “kept under the custody” of the university’s Finance Office.
In just one year, seven of eight universities in Hong Kong has cut ties with their students’ union, including the Chinese University of Hong Kong (#CUHK), the University of Hong Kong (#HKU), the City University of Hong Kong (#CityU), the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong (#PolyU), the Baptist University of Hong Kong (#BUHK) and the Lingnan University of Hong Kong (#LingnanU).
