Hong Kong Badminton Signs "5+1" After Winning a Match

Lee Cheuk Yiu, an athlete representing Hong Kong in the Yonex-Sunrise Hong Kong Open Badminton Tournament, has defeated his opponent from Thailand in the badminton singles category on November 13. After his victory, he raised all 5 fingers on his right hand, and his index finger on his left hand.

When he met with the press, he said he wanted to share the glory of his victory with all the Hongkongers. When asked what the meaning behind his gesture was, he replied “those who know it would understand.”

While the indefinite social struggle and conflicts have caused massive disruption to local traffic networks and disturbed his mood before the match, he stated that his determination does not only apply in his badminton matches, but also in the Hongkongers’ current fight for freedom. He believes that if people are willing to persevere, Hongkongers would win.

Hong Kong Athlete Attacked by Pro-China Camp for Wearing Black

Badminton athlete Ng Ka-long, who represents Hong Kong in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, was attacked by the pro-Beijing camp for wearing black, although he has won against Lino Munoz, an athlete representing Mexico on July 24, 2021.

The pro-Beijing camp also reprimanded the winning athlete for not showing the emblem of the Hong Kong SAR on his sportswear.

Ng explained on his Instagram page that he had no sponsor for his jersey and did not receive any authorization to print the official emblem on the clothes he prepared for himself. Ng called on people in general to look at the situation before firing critiques.

#Badminton Star for Wearing Black

After being attacked by a member of DAB, a pro-China party, for donning black in Tokyo Olympics, Hong Kong Badminton athlete Angus Ka-long Ng lost his latest match in the elimination round on July 28, 2021. Ng expressed immense disappointment but thanked his supporters for rooting for him.

Ng has won in an earlier match against Mexican representative Lino Munoz on July 25. Despite his victory, Ng had to spend time between matches to respond to the criticism sparked by the pro-Beijing camp--its members had demanded Ng to withdraw from the Olympics, all because he has worn a black tee shirt.

It can only be assumed that the pro-Beijing party associated the color black to pro-democracy movement which they oppose.

Ng explained on his social media page that he has no sponsor and received no authorization to print the Hong Kong SAR emblem on his own tee shirt.

The criticism of the pro-Beijing camp led to the rapid change of Ng's tee shirt by the Hong Kong Olympics Commitee within days.

On July 28, Ng was given a new tee-shirt in white and green, printed with the Hong Kong SAR emblem, sponsored by Fila, in a competion with Kevin Cordon, representative of Guatemala. However, the tee-shirt was not Ng's first choice for his match. During the match, he kept wiping the sweat that was not absorbed by the tee shirt.

After losing the match, Ng expressed his frustration and thanked his supporters on Instagram. "I am moved by all the support and encouragement. I know I'm not alone. Maybe some people are destined to play tragic roles in life," the Hong Kong Badminton star wrote. "I will stand up again, but it'll take some time."

The pro-Beijing camp's criticism over Ng's black tee shirt has angered many people in Hong Kong. Many netizens felt for Ng and pointed out that the incident has imposed unnecessary pressure on Hong Kong athletes in international games.

#Taiwan beats China to win gold in #badminton men's doubles

In the badminton men's doubles final on July 31, 2021, Lee Yang and Wang Chi-Lin of Taiwan defeated China's Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen in straight sets, with a score of 21-18 and 21-12. This was Taiwan's historic gold medal in badminton.

In Hong Kong, more than 200 people gathered at APM mall in Kwun Tong, watching live broadcast of the match by Cable TV Olympics 601 channel.

Every time when the Taiwan team scored, the crowd clapped their hands. In the determining second round, when Taiwan won by scores and the China team conceded losing the challenge, all in the mall applauded in roaring cheers.

At the award ceremony, the plum blossom flag representing Taiwan's Chinese Olympic Committee was raised taking the top most position.

However, in Hong Kong, Cable TV did not broadcast the award ceremony after Taiwan won gold. Instead, mixed 4 x 400 metres relay was broadcast which was completed some time earlier. The relay was a delayed broadcast.

Speaking to the media, Chu thanked Hongkongers for their support and asked the public to continue supporting Hong Kong athletes and anyone who likes to do sport, regardless of their levels and categories.

"Whether they are elite athletes or athletes with potentials, the spectators can hardly witness their hardwork, injuries and difficulties in the long process of training," Chu said.

"The 30 minutes seen by the spectators in a match worthes perhaps 10 years of practices, for one to shine in the field."

Chu reminded his fellow Hongkongers, "Please support Hong Kong athletes, whether they are able-body or not, professional or amateur. Do support anyone who likes doing sport. Do enjoy sport."
