Police Surround Agnes Chow and District Councillor's Anti-Health Code Booth

On the evening of Sept 7, 2020, Agnes Chow, former vice-secretary-general of DemosistƵ and Yau Tsim Mong District Councillor Ho Fu-wing set up a street booth in Jordan, expressing their opposition to the government's implementation of health code.

This has attracted police attention. Chow and Ho were encircled by the police and everyone at the booth was ticketed for "violating the gathering ban".

In August, police arrested Chow for "breaching the national security law". Chow has to report to the police again on Dec 2, one day before her birthday. Chow had mentioned earlier that her only wish is to be able to return home and spend her 24th birthday at home.

A 12-year old girl, on her way to shop for pastel chalk on Sunday, September 6, 2020, was body-slammed head-on by the riot police, who knocked her off her feet. Three more riot police piled on top of her as she was forcefully pinned to the ground in between one of the officerā€™s legs, causing multiple injuries on her body.

This left the city enraged and the girl traumatised.

The mother of the girl, Mrs Ho, told Apple Daily that her daughter refused to talk about the incident nor watch any relevant video footage. She is worried that her daughter might be suffering from psychological trauma and might need help from a psychologist.

Several orthopedic surgeons, who refused to be identified, commented that the policeā€™s violent enforcement, targeting a young girl, had a good chance of breaking the girlā€™s ribs and lumbar spine bones. They added, ā€œThe girl was very lucky to have gotten away with just abrasions."

Families Waiting for The Return of the #MassArrest Victims

On Sept 6, 2020, Hong Kong netizens initiated a march in protest of the government's postponement of the Legislative Election, which was originally scheduled that day.

Police cordoned off many areas in Yau Ma Tei, Tsim Sha Tsui and Mongkok and conducted a mass arrests of at least 289 civilians.

Outside of Hung Hom Police Station, some arrestees said the police crowded over 100 of them in a carpark under the hot and humid weather. They also said they were only passing by the area when arrested.

Outside of Sau Mau Ping Police Station, many families were still waiting at 11pm on Sept 7. Their closed ones had been detained for more than day.

Ms Fung received a call from her sister at 9am that she would be able to bail, but Ms Fung still saw no sign of her sister in the evening. Police only opened one room to grant bail.

Police Charge Pro-democracy activist with Sedition for Chanting "Five Demands and Not One Less" and Other Protest Slogans

Pro-democracy activist Tam Tak-chi, deputy chairman of People Power, was mentioned in Fanling Magistrates' Court on Sept 8, 2020, after being detained for more than 50 hours.

The police arrested Tam in Tai Po at noon on Sept 6, charging him with ā€œseditionā€ and "causing others to hate or despise the government" under Article 10 of the Cap. 200 Crimes Ordinance.

In court, the prosecution claimed that the following phrases incite hatred for the government and the police.

1. "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times"
2. "Five Demands Not One Less"
3. "Corrupt Cop, May Your Whole Family Die"
4. "Disband the Police Force"
5. "[Police] Disppeared on 7.21, Murdered on 8.31 and Shot People on 10.1"

The court refused Tam's application for bail and the next hearing will be held on November 27, 2020. Tam was sent to Lai Chi Kok Reception Centre for further detention.

One day before the court, pro-Beijing channel TVB News had already released information: it was said that Tam from the end of June to August had been disseminating "seditious materials" by running street stations, speaking via loudspeakers, and publishing on social media platforms. These messages included "Down with the Communist Party" and slogans "Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of our Times", and calling for "sanctions against officials". The pro-Beijing news channel described his behavior as "an attempt to provoke surrounding people."

Mother of Arrested Pro-democracy Shop Owner: "How many families has Carrie Lam broken up! Carrie Lam, you're ruining Hong Kong people's lives!"

On Sept 5, 2020, Hong Kong police arrestss Lai Chun-pong, the owner of "3C Maintenance Workshop", which provides mobile phone maintenance services, on suspicion of being "involved in a large number of firearms and prohibited weapons" seized in Wan Chai and other places before the "International Human Rights Day Parade" on Dec 8, 2019.

Lai appeared before the Eastern Magistracy on the 7 Sept 2020, and was charged with "conspiracy with intention to injure". His bail application was rejected, and Lai will remain in custody until the second hearing on Dec 7, 2020.

After the court adjourned, Lai's relatives and friends were waiting at the exit of the prison vehicle, including his mother as well as a woman carrying a baby and holding a child's hand.

About 50 uniformed police officers came to form a cordon line. When the prison van drove out, Lai's mother called out, "Ah-Pong, add oil [fight on]!" Stricken with sorrow, she continued to lament: "How many families has Carrie Lam broken up!" and "Carrie Lam, you're ruining Hong Kong people's lives!" Others nearby comforted her.

Police once again stopped and searched the citizens outside the court, and drove reporters away.

Broadcasters urged to cancel plans to cover #Beijing #WinterOlympics

//Some of the worldā€™s largest broadcasters including American network #NBC are being asked by human rights groups to cancel plans to cover next yearā€™s Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Winter Games are scheduled to open on Feb. 4, 2022.

The request comes in an open letter from rights groups representing minorities in China, including #Uyghurs, #Tibetans, #HongKong residents and others.

The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, was sent Tuesday to NBC Universal chief executive officer Jeff Shell and other international broadcast executives. NBC is paying $7.75 billion for the rights to the next six Olympics and works closely as a partner with the Switzerland-based International Olympic Committee.

Those payments are estimated to account for up to 40% of the IOCā€™s total income. The letter says the broadcasters risk ā€œbeing complicitā€ in the ā€œworsening human rights abusesā€ in China.
The letter comes just days after the delayed Summer Olympics and Paralympics wrapped up in Tokyo, putting the focus on the IOC and its choice of Beijing.//

Hong Kong's Secretary Chief Accuses Pro-democracy Groups for "Spreading hatred for HK and Beijing Governments" in Prisons with Chocolate

On September 7, 2021, Hong Kong SAR Government's Secretary for Security, Chris Tang Ping-Keung, accused pro-democracy groups of "threatening national security" in the prisons of Hong Kong.

Tang said, "Somebody creates privilege with prison supplies, including chocolate, and solicits followers in prison, as a result to spread hatred for the Hong Kong and the Central Governments, threatening national security".

Tang also named 612 Humanitarian Relief Fund for sending letters to people in prison, calling them to keep up protesting.

Social worker and former legislator Bottle Shiu Ka-Chun, the founder of a prisoner rights organisation #Wallfare, spoke to InmediaHK. Shiu said that ordinary people can hardly understand Tang's jumpy logic. He emphasised that the so-called "followers" cannot be solicited with those childish method.

"Or you can give 2 packs of chocolate to the prison and ask for an immediate follow. Then, there is no point doing national security education to have a peaceful world," Shiu remarked.

Pro-Beijing newspaper agencies called the prison in Hong Kong as "a place for Anti-China and Anti-HK". Tang also used the exact same phrase. Shiu disagreed and said, "They [pro-democracy protesters] have already lost their freedom and are all arrested. They live according to your will everyday. How are they still messing up Hong Kong?"

[Editor's Notes: Wall-fare, a concern group supporting pro-democracy protesters, announced its disbandment on September 14, 2021 due to the "pressure" faced by the founder and the volunteers.]

Police Arrests Hong Kong Journalists Association's Chair

On September 7, 2022, veteran journalist and chairman of Hong Kong Journalists Association (#HKJA) #RonsonChan was arrested in Hong Kong for "obstructing police officers and disorder in public place".

It was reported that Chan and a photographer were on their way to a press briefing in Mong Kok, where they were intercepted by two plainclothes police officers for no apparent reason.

As Chan asked the officers for
police ID, they refused and accused Chan of being not cooperative. Within minutes, he was warned for multiple times and arrested.

Before mid-night, Chan was released on bail after being held at the Mong Kok police station for about 11 hours.

In an interview with local press, Chan told reporters that one of the police officers scoffed at him, "HKJA is trash". Later, he also taunted that "when will you die?"

Chan recited that his wrist was being forcefully held together, leaving a visible bruise mark.

#DeutscheBank CEO warns recession is inevitable, says #Germany must cut reliance on #China

//The German economy stagnated in the second quarter, while producer price inflation hit a record high in July. The German finance ministry cited reduced gas supplies from Russia, rising costs of energy and other goods, and persistent supply chain disruptions in part due to China's "zero-Covid" policy...

"When it comes to dependencies, we also have to face the awkward question of how to deal with China. Its increasing isolation and growing tensions, especially between China and the United States, pose a considerable risk for Germany," Sewing said, adding that China had become a "cornerstone" of the German economy.

He highlighted that China accounts for around 8% of German exports and 12% of imports, while more than one-tenth of the sales of companies listed on the country's DAX stock index go to China, adding that the pandemic made clear the extent to which German supply chains rely on Russia.

"Reducing this dependency will require a change no less fundamental than decoupling from Russian energy," he said.//

#US bans ā€˜advanced techā€™ firms from building facilities in #China for a decade

//US technology firms that receive government funding will be banned from building ā€œadvanced technology facilitiesā€ in China for a decade, the Biden administration has announced, as it outlined plans to increase domestic production of semiconductors.

The requirements come under the US governmentā€™s near-$53bn (Ā£46bn) plan to scale up manufacturing of semiconductor chips ā€“ the ā€œbrainā€ in every electronic device from cars to household appliances ā€“ which are predominantly produced in Asia.

The US Chips and Science Act (#Chips), approved by Congress in August, is part of the American response to a long-running technological dispute between Washington and Beijing, as US firms demand more government support to reduce reliance on components produced in Chinese factories...

The Chips Act commits a total of $280bn to hi-tech manufacturing and research, and is designed to increase the USā€™s competitiveness with China.

The US crackdown on the sale of technology to China has already begun to have an impact, with the US chip designer Nvidia disclosing last week that it had been told by US officials to stop exporting two top computing chips for artificial intelligence work to China.//

5 Hong Kong speech therapists found guilty of sedition over childrenā€™s books

[Editors note: The five speech therapists were sentenced to one year and seven months in jail.]

//Five Hong Kong speech therapists have been found guilty of breaching the colonial-era sedition law by printing a series of childrenā€™s books about sheep and wolves. The publications were said to have spread separatism and incited hatred against the authorities...

District Judge Kwok Wai-kin on Wednesday convicted Lorie Lai, Melody Yeung, Sidney Ng, Samuel Chan and Fong Tsz-ho of conspiring to print, publish, distribute and display three books with seditious intent between June 2020 and July 2021.

The five executive committee members of the General Union of Hong Kong Speech Therapists, all of whom had denied the charge, could face up to two years behind bars. They will return to court on September 10 for mitigation and sentencing...

Gwen Lee, Amnesty Internationalā€™s China campaigner, said in a statement on Wednesday evening that the conviction was an ā€œabsurd example of the disintegration of human rights in the city.ā€

ā€œWriting books for children is not a crime, and attempting to educate children about recent events in Hong Kongā€™s history does not constitute an attempt to incite rebellion,ā€ Lee said in the statement...

ā€œThe Hong Kong authoritiesā€™ recent revival of colonial-era sedition charges to prosecute activists, journalists and writers is a brazen act of repression. No one had been charged with sedition since 1967 until the Hong Kong government began weaponizing these provisions to intensify its crackdown on freedom of expression.ā€//
