Declaration from the Student Union of HKUST towards the Police yelling “break out the champagne” when arresting a student from the university.

We were notified during midnight that a student from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology(HKUST) was arrested in Tuen Mun. When he was taken into custody, riot police surrounding him yelling, “Hey, it’s UST!” “We will break out the champagne tonight!” to the journalists and citizens nearby.

On the day our schoolmate Chow passed away, citizens in Tuen Mun launched a mourning event. After police officers arrived, police officers shouted at the public, "We will celebrate with champagne tonight!" The Police said on the following day that the wording was inappropriate and had reprimanded that policeman. Urging police officers on the frontline to pay attention to their word choice. However, the riot police officers in Tuen Mun once again violated the orders from their superiors by making provocative statements to the public. They even deliberately mentioned HKUST and champagne. We severely condemned the act and ask the police to apologize within 24 hours, withdraw the comments and punish the relevant police officers.

If the police refuse to show remorse, we promise that whenever there’s a deceased “brave” Tuen Mun police office, we would donate $100,000 Hong Kong dollars to the French Champagne Committee(Maison de la champagne) to promote friendship between Hong Kong and France and deepen Hong Kong people's understanding of the champagne culture. Since the public servants said that they would like to drink #champagne when they performed their duties, we also appealed to the general public to donate all kinds of alcohol to the police officers in Tuen Mun, greet and comfort them for everything they had done to the people in the past five months.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Says Will Keep Pressuring China on Human Rights Issues and Warns that Tough Talk is Meaningless

Since the case of Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou, the Sino-Canada relation remains tense. Francois-Philippe Champagne, the Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, said in the House of Commons on Monday (23rd Nov) that Canada would continue to pressure China with allies, especially on the human rights issues, and emphasized that irresponsible tough talk on China generates no tangible results.

Appearing before the Canada-China Relations Committee of the Canadian Parliament, Champagne referred China to be a key role in climate change and global economic development. He also point out that tough talk on China is useless, “To those who are seduced by this one-dimensional view, I say that while it is easy to be tough, Let's not fall into the temptation of tough and irresponsible rhetoric that will generate no tangible results for Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor, our farmers and entrepreneurs, and human rights victims and advocates.”

Champagne emphasized that Canada would not be soft on the human rights situation, including the crackdowns in Hong Kong and Xinjiang. In fact, Canada was the first to suspend the extradition treaty with Hong Kong in July and promised to make it easier for Hong Kong youth to immigrate to Canada. Champagne said, “It is absolutely imperative that advanced democracies like Canada and our like-minded partners work together to protect the international rules that have ensured stability and prosperity for decades. It is a challenge we all share. No country will succeed alone.”
