NDP Critic for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Jenny Kwan, made urgent calls for special immigration measures for the people of Hong Kong to Minister Mendicino. She urged the minister to implement special measures including immediate actions to expedite and expand family sponsorships, extend student and working visas, and offer more pathways to citizenship.

NDP Foreign Affairs Critic, Jack Harris stated that the Liberals had the responsibility to take a leadership role in bringing like-minded nations together to stand up to China regarding the things that are going on in Hong Kong, and on Human Rights.

Ex-CEO of Google Warned: China's Control of AI will Harm the World

(North American News) The ex-CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, warned that the Chinese dictatorship would promote artificial intelligence (AI) development beyond the U.S. Once China controls the global AI technology, it would be a disaster to the world. Besides, he urged the U.S. government to catch up on the pace, doubling the funds on technology development in the next five years.

Schmidt, the Chairman of the Defense Innovation Advisory Board under the U.S. Department of Defense, participated in a seminar on AI technology at Bipartisan Policy Center on Tuesday. He said there is an advantage for the Chinese government as they are huge, single-minded, and adopt a top-down model, which the U.S. government is hard to duplicate. "I am not praising nor supporting them, but I urge you to take this issue seriously."

Schmidt described that the "high-tech authoritarianism" model motivated China to exceed the U.S. in all aspects. "They will have a larger economy, more funding on development, higher quality of investigations, broader technology applications, and a stronger computer infrastructure." He emphasised that once China controls AI technologies of the world, it “might not be a very pretty place to live.”

Why are these state media artists disrespecting the CCP?

The image above, from Xi Jinping’s visit to CGTN in 2016, states the reality of PRC state media all too clearly: “the CCP is CGTN’s daddy.”

Five years later, how come so many PRC state media personalities on Twitter are going to such great lengths to hide their Chinese state affiliations? Is it because they oppose the CCP? Enquiring minds want to know.

Before I address this question, I need to present a brief interlude on terminology: I propose the term “state media artist” for people who work for PRC state media.

China will soon surpass Russia as a nuclear threat –senior U.S. military official

China, in the midst of a rapid nuclear weapons buildup, will soon surpass Russia as the United States' top nuclear threat, a senior U.S. military official said on Friday, warning that the two countries have no mechanisms to avert miscommunication.

U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Thomas Bussiere, the deputy commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, which oversees the country's nuclear arsenal, said China's development of nuclear capabilities "can no longer be aligned" with its public claim that it wants to maintain a minimum nuclear deterrent.

"There's going to be a point, a crossover point, where the number of threats presented by China will exceed the number of threats that currently Russia presents," Bussiere told an online forum.

#Vitasoy requests personal info of staff's family and affiliations in order to pay their wages

On July 1, 2021, a 50-year-old Hong Kong man #LeungKinFai killed himself after stabbing a policeman. It later came to public attention that Leung was an employee at the beverage maker Vitasoy.

In August 2021, a union group expressed concern over reports that Vitasoy is asking its staff to declare any links they and their relatives have with various organisations.

Vitasoy has reportedly asked its workers in mid-August 2021 to sign an agreement to allow the company to collect their personal information as well as that of their family members, including any membership of associations or affiliation with different organisations.

According to the reports, the manufacturer also stated that it might not be able to pay workers if they decline to submit the information, and that such data would be handed over to law enforcement departments if required.

A worker who spoke to Stand News says he could not understand why the company
would want to collect information on their family members. "I'm the one working here, not my family. I feel like they're stripping me naked." Another worker said that it put him in a dilemma: "if I agree, I'd worry my personal information would be leaked. If I don't, I might not be able to feed my family."

According to RTHK reports, Confederation of Trade Unions' chief executive Mung Siu-tat said it is rare for companies to require information that is irrelevant to a person's job. "It's not just collecting the staff members' information, but also their families’. It makes people question if the practice has violated the privacy ordinance because it'd be collecting excessive data," he told an RTHK programme.

Mung said he was not convinced by Vitasoy's explanation that it was merely digitalising its human resources system. "Whether it's for salary payment or for signing them up for medical plans, it should already have got sufficient information to do so," he said. "It's not just updating [its system], it has changed the scope of the personal data it collects. It's collecting more private information that is irrelevant to the employment."

Mung said that it is not difficult to imagine that the move was linked to the stabbing incident on July 1.

There are no unanimous conclusions for US Epidemic Traceability Report, reprimand China for refusal to share information and block investigation

The Director of National Intelligence of the United States issued a report on the traceability of the Wuhan virus, showing that the intelligence agencies failed to reach a consensus on the source of virus. The report also stated, China interrupted the investigation and rejected to share information, which made the report could not be concluded. The Chinese Embassy in US responded that the report is unscientific, and US is trying to shirk its responsibility for fighting the epidemic by relying on report.

The report was published on 27August (Friday) and written by 18 intelligence organisations. Four of those organisations believed the virus is from the natural contact between human and infected animals, however this conclusion was only in “low credibility”. There is another intelligence organisation which has a “medium confidence” believed the virus is relevant to the laboratory. That is, concluding the virus “could be” the infected animals naturally infect the human beings and relevant to the laboratory. The report has also analysed the virus is not from biochemical weapon; Chinese officials are lack of foresight about virus will cause a “global pandemic”.
The report stated, the department cannot get the conclusion, or the conclusions only have low to medium confidence, which is because of the rejection of sharing important information from China has interrupted the investigation. In which, it cannot get the conclusion unless there are more new information. US President Biden emphasized, US will continue the suppression to China before they get the answer. He also indicated that the significant information is showing the start of pandemic is from China, “But from the beginning, the Chinese officials have already interrupted the international investigation and global public health organisation to gain the information”.
