China Censors “Western Holidays”, Blurring All Christmas Decorations on Variety Show
In recent years, China has often been reported to boycott Western holidays. The most recent case may be the online premiere of Hunan Television’s (also known as “Mango TV”) variety show “Star Detective” (明星大偵探) Season 6 on Dec 24. On the show, almost all Christmas decorations seen were blurred out and censored; Christmas hats and hair accessories worn by celebrities were also covered by animation effects. In effect, the whole screen was blurred out except for the actors. This caused a lot of controversy among viewers.
A Chinese netizen cited another case in November, where a dorm counselor at Harbin Institute of Technology was reported for sending chocolate to students during Thanksgiving. It is believed that the television station did it to head off future repercussions from the authorities. Until now, there has not been an official explanation from the school.
According to a report analysis by BBC Chinese, China's recent waves of boycotting Western holidays can be traced back to a document published by the Chinese Communist Party in 2017 named “Re: Opinions on the implementation of inheriting the Excellence of Chinese Traditional Culture” (關於實施中華優秀傳統文化傳承發展工程的意見). This document strongly advocates the promotion of traditional Chinese culture, and instructs that “Our Festivals” should be carried out in-depth. However, there was no mention of boycotting Western holidays.
The report also pointed out that there are quite a number of schools and institutions that are "voluntarily” boycotting Western holidays.

After his resignation as the representative of the social welfare sector in the city's legislature, Bottle Shiu Ka-Chun focuses on improving prisoners’ rights and rented an office for a newly established organisation, “Wall-fare”, in a commercial building next to the Lai Chi Kok Reception Center.
On top of supporting people in jail, he also supports pro-democracy protestors and their families. His long-term goal is to develop a resources center for prisoners.
Shiu picked the location as he hopes families of protestors can make contact quickly and directly. He has disclosed to the landlord that this office's functions are to provide services for neighbourhood, offer emotional support, serve as a venue for client meetings and group discussions.
“Wall-fare” has two part-time staff sorting and handing letters from the event called “Writing with You”. Almost a year since 24 Jan 2020, they handled more than 6,000 letters received via the “Writing with You” initiative. Shiu fully understands how essential letters are to people in jail. “As prisoners, they can only wait for letters anxiously,” he said.

Sino-US relations have deteriorated in recent years, but the number of Chinese immigrants continues to rise. The Center for China and Globalization (CCG) and Institute of Development of the Southwestern University of Finance and Economics released China International Migration Report 2020, a blue paper, this week. It states that China has accumulated 10.73 million immigrants, making it the world's third-largest immigrants exporter. The United States continues to be their first choice, having 2.89 million in accumulation up to last year. Moreover, immigrants population is getting younger, many of them came to the US to study as early as high school, while the proportion of "investment immigrants" has significantly declined. Some lawyers specializing in immigration services said that although many Chinese parents are resistant to "brainwashing education" in China, the US is also tightening visa restrictions for Chinese people.
Chinese citizens tend to immigrate to the US, Japan and Canada
The report cites the International Migrant Stock 2019 by United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), which shows that China has accumulated 10.73 million emigrants, making it the third-largest exporter of migrants in the world. For the top three countries they migrated, the order was the United States, Japan and Canada, having the same data as 2015. Last year, the number of Chinese immigrants to these three countries accumulated to 2.89 million, 780 thousand and 690 thousand respectively. In the past four years, there are 220 thousand, 70 thousand and 46 thousand.

On Christmas eve of 2020, an open letter was sent on Twitter to the Communist Chinese Party (#CCP) leader Xi Jiping, hoping that "the top leader of the country" could "help" the owner of the account and her daughter to leave China, so that she can reunite with her parents in the United States.
The account owner claimed to be the daughter-in-law of Zhou Yonghong, former state councillor and Party Secretariat of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party who has been in jail for 5 years under accusations of bribery, abuse of power and intentionally disclosing state secrets.
Huang Wan, daughter-in-law of Zhou, said that in December 2013, her whole family was taken away. They then lived at home under surveillance for 10.5 months, and were held in the detention center for more than one year. She was “tortured and abused” by the Public Security system in Hubei, China. She was then sentenced to probation order and spent 3 years under the monitor of the judicial office until June 2019.
After that, she was restricted to leave the country by the Beijing Chaoyang People's Court due to a “civil complaint that has nothing to do with me [her]”. 18 months has already passed, and the case still has not been trialed. Huang suspected that the intention is to keep her in China.
Huang described that the past seven years “felt like hell”. Recently, she was ordered by the Chinese court to evict from her home in ten days.
Despite her US citizenship, she still could not go back to the US because of the Chinesecourt’s travel restriction. She said she felt totally helpless in China.

British Think Tank: China Will Replace the United States as the World's Largest Economy in 2028, claimed to Have Rapid Recovery after Covid-19
A British think tank expects China to overtake the U.S. as the world's largest economy by 2028, five years earlier than last year's forecast. It also predicts that China, which per capita income exceeded US$10,000, is expected to become a "high-income economy" in the next five years.
The Guardian reported on 26 Dec, 20 that the British tank Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) has made the above forecast. The report also said that a year ago, CEBR predicted that China would not overtake the U.S. until 2033, but now the prediction has been brought forward.
CEBR studies the economic growth rates of 193 countries around the world. In its review of China, the consultancy group said China would narrow the gap with its biggest rival as it rapidly recovers from the effects of Covid-19 while the U.S. gets dragged by the pandemic. CEBR expects China's economy to grow at an average annual rate of 5.7% from 2021 to 2025 and 4.5% from 2026 to 2030. The Center also expects a strong rebound from the U.S. in 2021, but growth is likely to slow to 1.9% per year from 2022 to 2024 and further to 1.6% thereafter.

A strong majority of Canadians favour a registry of foreign agents, similar to ones in Australia and the United States, to shed light on Canadian citizens paid to influence Canada’s political process on behalf of countries such as China or Russia.
