Support Group for Hong Kong's Pro-democracy Political Prisoners Faces Disbandment

#WallFare is a prisoner support group initiated by former pro-democracy lawmaker and social worker Shiu Ka-chun (#BottleShiu).

The group is known for providing support for detained and jailed pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong and their families. The group has helped families purchase prison-approved supply for inmates, coordinated letter-writing schemes to help inmates communicate with the outside world, and offering counselling services for families.

The group has come under pressure from Hong Kong authorities, with Secretary for Security #ChrisTang accusing (without naming) organizations for recruiting prisoners to develop influence among inmates and endanger national security while incarcerated.

Shiu, who started the support group 9 months ago, said on September 14, 2021 that the group would be disbanded and that he would release a statement soon. "The most important for Hongkongers is to stay alive," he said.

China Prepares New Anti-Sanction Laws for Hong Kong and Macau

China’s government is planning to introduce new laws in Hong Kong and Macau that could bar foreign entities and individuals in the cities from complying with sanctions against China, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The new laws are expected to mirror China’s own “antiforeign sanctions law,” which Beijing rushed through in June in response to sanctions imposed on the country by the U.S. and Europe, the people said.

China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday that the country’s legislature was scheduled to add provisions to the mini-constitutions of Hong Kong and Macau during a four-day session beginning Aug. 17, though it didn’t specify what changes would be made.

Broadcasters urged to cancel plans to cover #Beijing #WinterOlympics

//Some of the world’s largest broadcasters including American network #NBC are being asked by human rights groups to cancel plans to cover next year’s Winter Olympics in Beijing. The Winter Games are scheduled to open on Feb. 4, 2022.

The request comes in an open letter from rights groups representing minorities in China, including #Uyghurs, #Tibetans, #HongKong residents and others.

The letter, obtained by the Associated Press, was sent Tuesday to NBC Universal chief executive officer Jeff Shell and other international broadcast executives. NBC is paying $7.75 billion for the rights to the next six Olympics and works closely as a partner with the Switzerland-based International Olympic Committee.

Those payments are estimated to account for up to 40% of the IOC’s total income. The letter says the broadcasters risk “being complicit” in the “worsening human rights abuses” in China.
The letter comes just days after the delayed Summer Olympics and Paralympics wrapped up in Tokyo, putting the focus on the IOC and its choice of Beijing.//

China is becoming more assertive in international legal disputes

IN EARLY JANUARY the Communist Party published a five-year plan for the development of “socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics”. Most of the document is domestically focused, but one section is devoted to foreign matters. It calls on China to help shape international law, to turn itself into the first choice of jurisdiction when resolving cross-border disputes and to promote the use of Chinese law abroad.

China threatens Australia with missile attack

In the face of an increasing torrent of abuse from Beijing, Canberra should seek a much clearer commitment from Washington that its United States ally will retaliate if China launches a missile attack against Australia.

As far as Australia is concerned, the growing torrent of threats and bullying from Beijing mean that we need to have a much clearer understanding from our American ally about extended deterrence—not just nuclear deterrence but also conventional deterrence against Chinese long-range theatre missiles with conventional warheads.

China hits back after EU official joins call for cooperation on pandemic origins probe

A joint statement asks Beijing ‘to reconsider its decision to not engage in the WHO’s proposal for the next phase of the COVID-19 origins study.’

In a veiled warning to Brussels, Chinese officials urged Wednesday an end to "politicizing the issue of origins tracing" amid growing pressure on Beijing to allow for a more thorough investigation into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic.

The statement, made by China's mission to the EU, comes after Research and Innovation Commissioner Mariya Gabriel added her name on Tuesday to a group of scientific experts and government representatives from the U.S., Australia and Japan. In a statement, they called on the "Chinese government to reconsider its decision to not engage in the World Health Organization's proposal for the next phase of the COVID-19 origins study."

US says China’s claims in the South China Sea have ‘no basis’ in international law

"Beijing's claim to the vast majority of the South China Sea has no basis in international law," Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said. "That assertion treads on the sovereignty of the states in the region."

Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said Tuesday that Beijing’s expansive claims in the South China Sea have “no basis in international law”, taking aim at China’s growing assertiveness in the hotly contested waters.

Austin’s broadside came at the start of his first trip to Southeast Asia as US defence secretary, as he seeks to rally allies in the region as a bulwark to China.
