Hong Kong Police Object Annual June 4th Vigil for Tiananmen Massacre,
Organizer calls for a new way to commemorate: Let candles be lit everywhere in Hong Kong

The Hong Kong Police on June 1 issued a letter of objection for the Annual Memorial for the massacre in 1989 Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The vigil had been held in Victoria Park for 30 years since 1989. This is the first time the vigil is cancelled by police's order.

Before the police announcement, Lee Cheuk-yan, chairman of the Hong Kong Alliance (Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China) was already not optimistic about getting an approval, and stated that they already have a Plan B in mind.

Lee said, if the police intentionally use the gathering ban as a reason to ban the assembly, then the Alliance will call for a different way to commemorate, which is to light up candles everywhere in the city.

Hong Kong Journalist Association requests access to Registers Lists by all media

The Hong Kong Journalist Association has opposed the rule that only government-approved media is allowed to access the Provisional Registers and Omissions List. In an appeal letter to the Chief Executive, the Association expressed concerns that the discriminating system will limit the media's ability to monitor the election, and demanded the government to reconsider the policy.

The Provisional Registers and Omissions List reveals Hong Kong voters’ names and residential addresses in the public.

The public used to have access to the list, until the Junior Police Officers Association applied for a judicial review to restrict its accessibility in order to prevent doxxing of police officers. The court now ruled that only government-approved media is allowed access.

Hong Kong Authorities Accuse June 4th Museum of being "Unlicensed", days before Annual Commemoration of Tiananmen Massacre

[Editor's note: The June 4th Museum has been operating at its current location since moving there in April 2019. This is the first accusation of violations in the two years since.]

On the afternoon of June 1, 2021, officers from the Hong Kong government's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (#FEHD) accused the June 4th Museum in Hong Kong of being "unlicensed".

The museum had only been reopened for three days after updating their displays over the past month, when 5 FEHD enforcement officers arrived on the premises, mere days ahead of the commemorative day of the Tiananmen Massacre.

Operated by the Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China, the Museum is currently running an exhibition on the theme of "The '89 Movement and Hong Kong". The museum calls on Hongkongers to commemorate the 32th anniversary of the Tiananmen Massacre on June 4th, despite the police banning the annual candlelight vigil in Victoria park.

Enforcement officers claimed that licences are required for "entertainment venues" that are open to the public, and said that exhibitions are no exception. According to the Places of Public Entertainment Ordinance, offenders can face a fine of up to HK$25,000 and imprisonment for six months, and a further fine of HK$2,000 per day if the offence continues.

The officers took the personal details of the staff at the museum.
