Hongkongers Use Creativity to Defend Freedom of Expression Despite the Intimidation of the National Security Law

In Hong Kong, the shopping mall Dragon Center prominently displayed 3 modelesque female figures painted by famous local comic artist Elphonso Lam, accompanied by the messages "never forget the original cause" and "remember the good".

Many citizens cheered at the sighting of the large billboard for the implicit connotation of the message.

The triptych, however, was nit-picked by a pro-China district councilor for being "vulgar and immoral" in early October. After the Bejing loyalist lodged complaints and even went on petitioned, the graphics on the billbooard was removed In mid-October, reportedly, due to a strong typhoon.

On October 25, 2020, a new set of graphics was installed featuring the work of Gum Siu-man, who is another popular comic artist in Hong Kong.

Referencing the style of Elphonso Lam , Gum this time illustrated 3 heavier mid-age women wearing the same outfit and posing in the same gestures.

After Lam's, Gum’s comics too went viral on the internet. The sense of humor and the wit in response to the pro-China district councilor’s complaint have drawn rounds of frenzied discussions on social media, attracting many citizens to flock all the way to the shopping mall to take picture at the billboard.

Artist Elphonso Lam later shared a comment on his Facebook page, stating that his comic work was taken down only because of the strong typhoon. Lam clarified that district councilor’s complaint has never been part of the decision.

Lam elaborated further that taking selfie in front of the billboards and sharing on social media has brought lots of pleasure to Hongkongers. He is gratified to see the long-lost smile among local population. He was honored for bringing excitement and joy to his fellow citizens amidst difficult times.

Most of the participants dressed in black and many held slogans demanding the release of the youths, and flags that read “Liberate Hong Kong, Revolution of Our Times”, and “Hong Kong Independence”.

Twelve Hong Kong residents were intercepted by the Chinese maritime police on their way to Taiwan on August 23rd this year and were subsequently detained in Shenzhen. The family members of the 12 Hong Kong youths have been unable to contact the detainees. Requests by lawyers hired by the family members to get in touch with the detainees were refused. They were even contacted by Chinese authorities and were asked to withdraw from the case.

Reuters: Italy Blocks Telecommunication Group Fastweb from Signing 5G Agreement with Huawei

On Saturday (Oct 24), Reuters quoted two sources in reporting that during the cabinet meeting last Thursday, the Italian government barred the national telecommunication group Fastweb from signing an agreement with Huawei to supply equipment for its 5G core network. It was the first time that Italy vetoed a supply agreement over 5G core network with Huawei, which showed that Italy has taken a tougher stance against Huawei.

During the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Italy last month, he stated that China’s mobile network technology will threaten the national security of Italy. Huawei strongly refuted the allegations. Its Italian branch subsequently stated that they were willing to undergo a thorough review to prove that its technology did not pose any security risk.

The Italian government, however, used its special vetting powers on Thursday to bar the Italian branch of Fastweb, a subsidiary of Swisscom, from reaching a supply agreement with Huawei. The 5G core network is seen as the most sensitive and is for handling sensitive data. A source from the Italian government told Reuters that the government vetoed the agreement and asked Fastweb to use a different supplier. The source also stated that Fastweb had initially chose Huawei as the exclusive supplier of 5G network. Huawei and Fastweb made no response.

Cambodians Protested Against the Alleged Construction Plan of China Military Base in Cambodia

Some Cambodian citizens gathered in front of the Chinese Embassy in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, protesting against China of proposing a military site in Cambodia.

In the protest on Friday (23rd October), citizens clashed with the police and the police arrested many protestors. It is reported that the Phnom Penh Police detained at least three protesters in a Police truck nearby after the arrest at the scene.

Reuters reported that one of the protestors waved the Cambodian flag and shouted, “We refuse to let China build a military base in Cambodia”. The police at the scene warned the protestors to dismiss within 5 minutes through a loudspeaker.

There have been reports stating that China and Cambodia had made a secret deal. It showed that the Phnom Penh government allocated a piece of land at Ream Naval Base in a port city Preah Sihanouk to China, for them to set up a military base. As a result, the China Navy can enter the coastal deepwater area of the Gulf of Thailand.

Amnesty shuts offices in Hong Kong as freedom meltdown in this once most free city in the world

International rights group Amnesty International said on October 25 that it would close its Hong Kong offices due to the China-imposed national security law.

Anjhula Mya Singh Bais, the chair of Amnesty’s international board, said in a statement that the two offices in Hong Kong would close by year-end, noting an intensification of a crackdown forcing at least 50 groups to disband under the law this year.

"This decision, made with a heavy heart, has been driven by Hong Kong’s national security law, which has made it effectively impossible for human rights organisations in Hong Kong to work freely and without fear of serious reprisals from the government,” said Singh Bais.

"The environment of repression and perpetual uncertainty created by the national security law makes it impossible to know what activities might lead to criminal sanctions," she added.

In the past, Hong Kong had served as one of Asia's leading NGO hubs, with groups drawn to its robust rule of law and wide-ranging autonomy -- guaranteed for Hong Kong when control over the former British colony was returned to Beijing in 1997.

Among the groups to have disbanded this year are several leading trade unions, NGOs and professional groups, while a number of other NGOs, including the New School for Democracy, have relocated to the democratic island of Taiwan.

Second Conviction for Inciting Secession: A Young Man Chanting Pro-Democracy Slogans in Public

Ma Chun-man, a prominent pro-democracy protester nicknamed "Captain America 2.0", was found guilty in a District Court on October 25 for inciting secession by chanting and displaying protest slogans.

District Judge Stanley Chan ruled that Ma “continuously and unreservedly” incited others to do what was prohibited under the national security law, using slogans such as “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times”, “One nation, one Hong Kong” and “Hong Kong independence, the only way out".

“The defendant’s words were not empty talk, but a sincere and heartfelt expression of his beliefs and feelings,” said Chan, who is among a list of judges hand-picked by Hong Kong’s leader to oversee national security cases.

Ma was the second person convicted under the National Security Law, after #TongYingKit who was sentenced to nine years in prison after he rode a motorbike through police blockades while flying a flag with a protest slogan.

"It was Conscience that Drove Hongkongers for 32 years to Mourn June 4th": Tonyee Chow Defends Herself in Court Against June 4 Unlawful Assembly Charge

Tonyee #ChowHangTung, former Vice-Chairperson of Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China (#HKASPDMC), was accused of promoting and calling on others to participate in the June 4 rally, and had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charge of inciting others to participate in an unauthorized assembly. The case was resumed in the West Kowloon Magistrates Court on Oct 25th.

Tonyee, who is herself a barrister, represented herself in court. She mentioned that all the cases brought against her are related to the Alliance and June 4th. The authorities are piling on these charges, showing that the regime is attempting to suppress and eliminate the memory of June 4th step by step.

She reiterated that after the police banned the rally this year, the Alliance had publicly announced that it would not hold a candlelight rally in Victoria Park. She has since written articles and taken interviews, in which she had simply appealed to the public to overcome their fears and continue to mourn June 4 through personal actions. She questioned how a call for action with no specified location could incite an unauthorized assembly, saying that the regime "might as well admit directly that what is forbidden is the June 4 memorial itself".

Tonyee stressed that it was not anyone's incitement that drove the people of Hong Kong to mourn June 4th for 32 years; rather, it was every person's conscience. "If the court wants to use the word 'incite', it ought to say that it was the people of Hong Kong who had incited me to do this."

And if she were to be punished for it, she would have no regrets, she said.

Malaysian rapper #Namewee and Taiwan-based Australian singer #KimberlyChen Fang-yu rolled out a Mandopop song titled "#Fragile" (玻璃心, or literally meaning "#GlassHeart"), on Youtube in mid-October 2021.

The term "glass heart" is commonly used to describe nationalist Chinese netizens who become easily upset when a social media post attacks the Chinese Comminist Party (#CCP).

While the song can be interpreted as a love song, the music video satirizes the CCP and nationalist Chinese netizens
(aka "#LittlePinks") through the extensive use of the color pink, simplified Chinese subtitles, and a giant and clumsy panda.

References are made to China's claims to Taiwan, bat soup representing COVID19, the Great Firewall, and #XiJingping's latest political campaign Common Prosperity.

The song hit the internet with an overwhelming popularity, receiving over 10 million Youtube views in just first few days.

The pro-China netizens criticized the lyrics for "inflicting insults on China", leading to both the ban of the singers in China and the removal of their #Weibo accounts.

In response, Namewee wrote on his Facebook page pointing out that the song has reflected a general trend as more people are realizing CCP's oppression and encroachment. The artist said, "[this song is] not so amazing, it's just a mirror."

Commenting on the freedom of expression in artistic creation, Namewee said, "If I have to give up creative freedom and my ideals, this goes against any artististic pursuit.  I would rather stop creating."

Namewee added in his comment that with the growing number of supporters, he would consider leveraging their influence to resist and protest against authoritarianism.

He said, "I believe if one remains silent in the face of iron fist, it would foster and reinforce them [authoritarianism]. Until one day, the iron fist hits your head as it spares no one."

On October 27, 2011, the Hong Kong-based music app, #MOOV, was found delisted the song from its app. Netizens slammed the music app, calling it "#FragileMOOV".
